Very cool Torrgy. I was messing around with the main page last night. Made a few changes. Moved the links over there. So I was checking out the various links. I had forgotten how cool some of them were. The Duluth Shipping News is cool and the view of Lake Superior from the Live Cam is cool too. |

Haven't been here for a while, but like the looks of the new opening page, good job Webby. Just got home from a week long vacation up near Ely. Have never been that way before, but now can't wait to go back! Fishing was awesome....brook trout, walleye, northern, etc. One morning it was fresh trout and eggs, one night a walleye fish fry. My three fisherman even caught 3 mounting size crappies that they immediately brought to the taxidermist upon returning home today. It takes a year for them to do their "thing" to them, which totally blew me away! The sun was a huge factor, and I'll be darn if I didn't come home with a good tan! Vacation was good...... |

Hummm... stuffing Crappies takes a year huh? There is a triva question for ya!! Sounds like a great time Hazel. Sure has been quiet in here. Must be summertime and everyone has better things to do than sit inside and play on the computer. Sure has been warm here, to warm, did get some rain yesterday though. That sure felt good. Have a great week everyone! |

Have to agree with you on the quiet part Torggy. It is the weekend though and maybe it will pickup a little tomorrow. Sure hope so. I have been checking in on the local T.H. paper site and they haven't posted any new news there lately either. I do get the local paper, but it is always about 2 weeks later. |

Hey there Torggy and Bassman, It is indeed sort of quiet. Funny thing though. When I look at the website statistics, the number of visitors does not fluctuate much. Sometimes folks just don't feel all that talkative I guess. Of course I feel like talking now, because I am at work and it is the middle of the night. Thankfully, things are pretty quiet. Of course I probably just cursed myself by even saying that. Funny how that works. Sort of like when I bring a book to work thinking I might have a little time at lunch to read. That is usually a recipe for disaster. Sort of the rain dance of the hospital world. So while I am thinking of it, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle, 4-wheeler, or motorcycle. We have had a real run on those sort of injuries this summer. It is not pretty. Don't put yourself or your families through the sort of misery I see here everyday. There. That is my lecture for the evening. |

Hi. I'm uncomfortable with the silence. Although a very introverted and shy person myself, I do quite enjoy all the chatter on here. We have been missing a few of the former regulars like, twoz? And a few new people like, angeldevil. Just a few thoughts to brighten this otherwise silent and uncomfortable moment: Time Changes Everything! I used to have Saturday Night Fever... Now I just have Saturday Night hot flashes. Ever get the feeling your stuff strutted off without you? Any woman can have the body of a 21-year-old... as long as she buys him a few drinks first. My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out. I've still got it, but nobody wants to see it. I'm getting into swing dancing. Not on purpose some parts of my body are just prone to swinging. It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffeemaker. I think I've reached my sexpiration date. People our age can still enjoy an active, passionate sex life! Provided we get cable or that dish thing. The good news is that even as we get older, guys still look at our boobs. The bad news is they have to squat down first. These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, "For fast relief." I've tried to find a suitable exercise video for people my age.. But they haven't made one called "Buns of Putty."

sisg - I DID I DID!! That was pretty cool. But I stumped it. Although I stumped myself too. I was trying to be the mom on that old sitcom that was divorced and had 3 kids and she was from the south and the oldest daughter always talked to the moon at night and the mom was a seamstress? It didn't now who I was....but I didn't remember all the details it was asking me either so I called it a draw. I need to try it again. I think I'll do that right now...... |

The saga continues: BAXTER, Minn. - The next owners of the iconic statues of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe, which have stood here for decades, remained uncertain despite a summer of debate and announcements about their future. The only certain thing is that they will soon move from their longtime home at the Paul Bunyan Amusement Center, which will close its doors forever at 5 p.m. today after 53 years of entertaining children. Don McFarland, owner of the amusement center, said he has sold the land for use as a Kohl's department store. It's scheduled to open this fall. Workers are scheduled to start dismantling the amusement park on Tuesday. In June, McFarland decided to give both Paul Bunyan and Babe to the Rhythm of the Rails, a nonprofit Brainerd theater group. The group planned to locate the statues at This Old Farm, an agricultural attraction east of Brainerd. This Old Farm's owners agreed to buy all of the park's rides, buildings and attractions and will operate them at its 180-acre site. Friday, a member of the Rademacher family, which owns This Old Farm, said McFarland agreed Thursday to sell Paul Bunyan and Babe to the family's attraction, rather than give them to Rhythm of the Rails. Jody Crowe, founder and producer of Rhythm of the Rails, said Thursday that there was a possibility that her group would not get the statues. No contracts for the statues have been signed.

My lumber camp on the Onion River was so large that the men had to have a weeks supply of food when walking from one side of the camp to the other. The smokestack above the kitchen was so tall that it was hinged in the middle to allow the clouds to go by. When Hot Biscuit Slim made soup, he rowed out into the center of the kettle with boatloads of cabbages, turnips and potatoes. Big Ole, the blacksmith, made a griddle for hot cakes that was ten acres across. Hot Biscuit Slim strapped flat sides of bacon on the feet of the cookhouse boys. They skated back and forth over the huge griddle until it was well greased. When the griddle began to steam, it became so foggy that no one could see across it. Every Sunday morning for breakfast my lumberjacks had hot cakes. They were so large that it took five men to eat one. I usually ate twelve or fourteen depending on how hungry I was. My lumber camp was the largest camp in this country. The bunkhouses stretched for five miles in all directions and each had five tiers of bunks, one above the other. Wood ticks bothered my men during the summer months. It was pretty hard to keep them out of the bunkhouses. The ticks in Minnesota were quite smart. They would gather around the office when a new batch of loggers came into camp and even crawl down Johnnie Inkslinger's pen to see what bunk the newcomers had so they could be first to move in and enjoy it. Big Ole, the blacksmith, built a kettle for soup that covered five and a half acres and sent for a Mississippi stern wheeler. It was quite a sight with the fire burning under the soup kettle and the old steamer paddling around mixing up vegetable soup for dinner. The kitchen tables were so long that Tiny Tim, the chore boy, usually drove the length of the table with the salt and pepper wagon, stayed all night and drove back in the morning for a fresh load. One time while we were logging off Minnesota, we had such a big wind that Big Ole, the blacksmith, had to bolt iron bands over the logs in the cast-iron stove to keep them from being sucked up the chimney. When I asked Brimstone Bill whether the cook shanty had been damaged during the big wind, he told me he didn't know because he hadn't found it yet. Brimstone Bill was probably the most cantankerous person in my camp. He was so irreligious that he even spoke disrespectfully to the equator. He was so contrary that every time he fell into the river, we had to look for him upstream. Near my Stony River Lumber Camp the white pines grew quite fast. In fact some of them grew so fast that my men couldn't cut them down because they couldn't chop in the same place twice.

Imagine, if you can, the excitement that was caused by the birth of Paul Bunyan! It took five giant storks, working overtime, to deliver him to his parents. He cut his teeth on a peavy pole and grew so fast the after one week he had to wear his father's clothes. His lungs were so strong that he could empty a whole pond of frogs with one "holler". Paul's clothing was so large they had to use wagon wheels for buttons. They used a lumber wagon drawn by a team of oxen as a baby carriage. When he outgrew this his parents put him on a raft off the coast of Maine. It is said that rocking in his sleep he caused huge waves which sunk many ships. He would eat forty bowls of porridge just to whet his appetite. As a child, Paul played with an axe and crosscut saw like other children played with toys. On his first birthday his father gave him a pet blue ox named Babe. Babe grew to be seven axehandles and a plug of tobacco wide between the eyes and as a snack would eat thirty bales of hay...wire and all. Paul and Babe were so large, the tracks they made galivanting around Minnesota filled up and made the 10,000 lakes. Johnny Inkslinger was the camp's head clerk. He invented bookkeeping about the same time that Paul invented logging. He kept track of everything down to the last bean. He used a pen (his own invention) connected to a barrel by a hose. In one week he saved twelve barrels of ink by not crossing his t's or dotting his i's. Paul like to work with big men. The most famous were his seven axemen. They were all named Elmer, so when he called they all came running. No grindstone was large enough to grind the axes so they sharpened them by holding them against large stones rolling down hill. The year of the two winters it got so cold the axeman let their beards grow full length. They wrapped the beards around them for warmth. In the spring Paul cut all the beards with a large scythe. The whiskers were stacked like hay and later sold for making mattresses. The year of the two winters the snow was so deep Paul had to dig down to the trees to continue logging operations. It got so cold that the boiling coffee froze so fast it was still hot when frozen. When the men spoke, their words froze in mid-air and when it thawed in the spring there was a terrible chatter for weeks. During the slack season, Paul's men made him a pipe. This wasn't easy. They had to select a special giant hickory tree and haul it in on two flatcars so they could work on it. Mosquitoes were a problem. The men fought them off with pike poles and axes. Paul brought in big bees to destroy them, but they intermarried and became worse. Their craving for sweets caused them to swarm a fleet of ships bringing sugar to Paul's camp. They ate so much they couldn't fly, and drowned. Paul saved two of the mosquitoes which he used for drilling holes in maple trees. Ole, the blacksmith, was the only man who could shoe Babe, the Blue Ox. Every time he made shoes for Babe they had to open a new iron mine. One time he carried a pair of Babe's shoes and their weight made him sink knee deep into the hard earth with every step. In his spare time Ole punched the holes in the donuts for the cook. Sourdough Sam, the cook, fed Paul's logging crews. He made everything except coffee from sourdough. He lost one leg and one arm when a sourdough barrel blew up. A load of pork and beans with the ox team pulling it went through the ice on a nearby lake. Sam had large fires built along the shore and boiled the lake making bean soup. All winter he fed the men bean soup with an ox-tail flavor.

Careful, DOM. While you're trying to figure out what women you used to, uh, date, don't stand up. You may get hit in the teeth by one of Brett Favre's errant passes. |

Sure, Larry. But only if you bring a donation of Natural Lite or a photo album of your favorite co-eds! |

Was that the rube from the local paper cartwheeling down the isle of the ISU game? GO CYCLONES! |

No, Larry. The rube was parked behind the Cyclone bench, waiting for Iowa to snatch the Cy-Hawk Trophy. He didn't get trampled; therefore, he considered the day a success. Iowa State is going to stink more than a leaky sewage plant this year. Judging from the way Northwestern and Wisconsin embarrassed themselves Saturday, the Clones won't be alone. By the way, if anyone wants to take my place and cover Iowa State's game at Texas Tech, go right ahead. Located in Lubbock, Tech is the only campus where I've been panhandled - twice within an hour! Ugh. That said, I ate one of the best steak dinners of my life (free, of course) with a bunch of Tech boosters. I didn't understand a word they said, but the food was great |

Vikes looked good Sunday night, even though Duante still sometimes thinks he's supposed to dribble the football and not throw it. But overall, they played well. Could there actually be hope in Vikingville? |

I saw most of the second half. I think there may be reason for hope. |

Torggy, I've still got a full case of unopened Fitger's sitting in my basement. The box did get a little wet one time but other than that, it's still a complete case. |
