Ray Kazmierczak | Remember | 07-05-2001 |
| I lived in Two Harbors for about 2 years my sophomore and junior years of high school. Does anybody remember me? My father was one of the men who started the Universal Fiberglass Company which lasted only about 3 years in Two Harbors after a fire destroyed the plant-it was located in the old train round house near the lake. I was envolved in many sports at THHS and enjoyed the people and the friends I made in Two Harbors-great little town! The time period I am talking about is 1965-68. I would have graduated from THHS if it had not been for the fire.--instead my family moved back to South Bend Indiana(hometown) and I graduated high school in south bend and went on to graduate from purdue university and now have been a pharmacist since 1973. Some names I remember Coach Halstead-football, Steve McInery,Larry Otterbald, Steve Larson, Larry Olson, John Vinge, Adolf Ojard,Dave Togerson. Everyone called me KAZ because of the difficulty of my name. Would be interesting to me see if I am remembered or if this would provoke memory of Universal Fiberglass company-interesting as weel for my father Ben Kazmierczak-who also loved MINNESOTA AND TWO HARBORS -THANKS

| Ray K, I'm a little young to remember you, but I'm glad you found this forum. When you were in TH, did you live in town or were you a "country kid"?
|
|
Ray (KAZZY) | Re: Remember | 07-05-2001 |
| I can only remember so much but I believe-- first lived on 1oth street-remember when heading out of town toward Knife River veering right to the house-had a great view of Two Harbors-then moved in town again -1st or 2nd street??-on the corner-- ore docks right out front window. Reading more on message board saw few more names of people I knew-Mark McDonald-THHS 69 maybe- 6ft 4 or 6 ft 6 played basketball-also David Boyce QB-THHS 67?? Jim Hansen was the center--Remember Bob Nyberg. Remember running plays up the HILL after practice- remeber the colors assigned to the year uou were in THHS green-freshman, black sophomore, red junior , gold a senior--colors were pulled over practice jersey. Silver Bay was the big rival and any Duluth team also a rival. Long bus trips- wow - to play all over state. As I read - remember I left city December66- Chuck Halstead became Principal of THHS ?? For 30 plus years have wondered how baseball team did in spring of 1967 and spring of 1968-I would have been on those teams and how did football team of fall 1967 do? What was the name of the resturant where you could buy great strawberry pies?? Remember smelting , trying to swim in Superior-right!! I remember the THHS building very well. Remember trying to beat those bigger Duluth schools-One game vividly remember is a basketball game in a very old Duluth HS ?? name- were we tried to beat the press by throwing ball high in the air- but gymnastic rings hung from their ceiling and the ball kept hitting them and falling to the ground-that was just part of the game-they never moved the rings-we lost.Thinking back can not believe they just let the rings hang! Remember beating 1 or 2 Duluth teams in football-great experience-One game John Vinje was captain-put 52-0 on our helmets as incentive to beat a Duluth team that won by that score the year before-I think we still lost-oh well--

webman | Re: Remember | 07-05-2001 |
| KAZ, I remember the next door neighbors getting one of the mailster rejects for a playhouse. We were so jealous. That three wheel thing was just too cool. I think the strawberry pies came from Betty's Pies out on Hwy 61 heading toward Silver Bay. It sounds like you spent some time living out in Segog. That is where you would have veered to the right. I am a little younger than you, but we lived in Segog until 1970. Oh yeah, the Doors sucked anyway.

| WELL KIDS, THIS IS IT. I GOTTA PACK AND HIT THE ROAD FOR AN ADVENTURES WEEKEND. I WILL THINK OF ALL OF YOU WHO I DON'T SEE. I WILL GET BACK AS SOON AS I AM ABLE. ALL HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.
|
|
Agats | Re: Remember | 07-06-2001 |
| I had forgotten all of those blue and white three wheeled fiberglass bodies that used to be around TH when I was a kid. My older brother and some friends made a boat out of one. The name “ABEX” sticks in my head. Was that the name of the fiberglass plant or the steel plant before it or is Abex even the right name? I seem to remember that some company also made roller plates for the ball mills (crushers) up at Reserve Mining at Silver Bay.
|
|
KAZ | Re: Remember | 07-06-2001 |
| The name of the plant was Universal Fiberglass company-my father along with 4 other men-from South Bend Indiana- started the plant-government regulations were about to end the 3 wheel model and require a 4 wheel model-that was a big production change over problem for such a small newly developed company-then disaster struck when a fire destroyed the plant. Through a website which shows satalite images-I have seen the outline of the round house(picture was 1995)-is that round house still there?? I remember the turn table which directed the locomotives in and out of the round house cost 1 million dollars and was sold for 1 dollar to get rid of it so the fiberglass company could be put in.More memories come to mind as I read posts on this message board. Its neat to remember when I was 16 in 1966 and living in Two Harbors!

Kitty | Re: Remember | 07-08-2001 |
| Webman, did I read your post correctly? You wrote the 'Doors sucked'? Everyone knows Jim Morrison was THE greatest rock singer of all time!!! And I thought you had good taste... ;-) Hope everyone had a good 4th. I'll have to read the article Torggy posted about T.H.'s 4th. Took my daughter and Mom to my hometown's parade and then out to Lac LaBelle for lunch. Anyway, I had to work the night of the 4th but made a killing. I really enjoy that job, bs-ing with people..you guys will have to stop by some time if you're in the neighborhood! Skipper, you blasted me for misspelling something, and I have no idea what it was. You know I'm a stickler for proper spelling! Haven't been posting lately because I had an exam (right after the 4th!!!) and two of my sisters are in town, so I've been busy. happy, the post was days ago, but I do agree with Skipper (miracles happen) about telling everyone you know about your dinner date. Enough said. Kas, your two years beats my one night in T.H.!! Welcome aboard. (I'm the resident flirt) Later...

Kitty | Re: Remember | 07-08-2001 |
| Speaking of spelling...Kas should have been Kaz. (Wipe that grin off your face, Skipper!)

Kitty | Re: Remember | 07-08-2001 |
| Just read the article about the lutefisk-tossing and I bet that was hillarious!! What's a Norwegian like me doing surrounded by a bunch of Finlanders? I should be in T.H.'s! Hey, where could I get a Norwegian flag, about 2' by 3' from? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

webman | Re: Remember | 07-08-2001 |
Kitty, Being dead does not necessarily equal being good. I have a healthy respect for some of the music of the Doors, I just don't like to listen to it. I feel the same way about opera. Those folks are extraordinarily talented, but I don't want to sit and listen to them either. I am glad you had a profitable 4th. I don't know where you can get a Norwegian flag, but I will do a little research.
|
|
webman | Re: Remember | 07-08-2001 |
| Kitty, Here is a link to the real deal on Norwegian flags and many other Norwegian things. Way back when . . . My pure Swedish father told his grandfather that he was planning on marrying, Grandpa said, "What's the matter, can't you find a nice Swedish girl?" My mom is 1/4 Norwegian. That was Grandpa's idea of a mixed marriage. http://www.norwaysouvenirs.com/flags.htm

Tim | Re: Remember | 07-09-2001 |
| Webman, Great story ! In this day of "political correctness" this might be considered a little raw but here goes. My Fathers mother ( 100% Swede) referred to Catholics as "darkies". My other Grandmother married a "Bohunk" from St. Paul. The other local women would pass by their house and whisper that Grandma was surly going to hell because she had married "out of her race". Anyway, I am 3/4 Swede and 1/4 "Bohunk" (Czechoslovakian). A Great Aunt on my fathers side (supposedly there was a touch of Finnish somewhere in her background) used to claim in a bawdy way after not a few Aquivets that her Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandmother was personnally raped by Ghengis Khan. She claimed it was quite an honor to be deflowered by the Khan himself. I digress.

Kitty | Re: Remember | 07-09-2001 |
| That last post had to be from one of the usual juvenile posters! You guys are unreal!! Webman, thanks for the Norw. link, I'll check it out and hopefully find some cool stuff. Hey, have you ever been to an opera? I went to one last year that was so moving, I was in tears. But I understand what you are saying.

South Shore | Re: Remember | 07-09-2001 |
| Ms. Kitty, I would be interested to know which opera you saw. For those of you who find opera a chore, I suggest the following: War and Peace by Sergei Prokofiev...La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi...La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini...Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini...Madam Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini...Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart. I know... I know... who has the time. But this is some powerful stuff. I discovered opera in (of all places) Vietnam. In those days I would swap between Jimi Hendrix to Puccini on my portable record player. It is strong powerful music. It was also written for the poor folks of the time. Now it is considered snobbish. Give it another chance. It can be fun.
|
|
webman | Re: Remember | 07-09-2001 |
| South Shore, It was me, not poor Kitty that posted about not caring to listen to opera. Upon further consideration, I have to retract part of what I said about opera. I should have said that there is SOME of it that I don't care to listen to. I played in the pit orchestra for about 7 nights worth of Madame Butterfly. I still go around singing parts of that one. Someday I will be old and wise and I will not make silly statements. (yeah right)

| Just to let evryone know, the big city of two swamps is still on the map. Heritage days, once again, seemed to be a success. Only a few brain cells were lost and the private identities of some of the websites contributors. Thanks for coming everybody!

Drifter | Re: Remember | 07-10-2001 |
| Webman - Excellent job getting the pics from Heritage Days up on the site so fast. What are those hoodlums doing leaning up against the Magic School Bus? Cruiser - Does B-loop have any of the new red cans of Schmidts left in his cooler? Thanks to the class of 81 for letting us crash your reunion and thanks to anyone who had anything to do with organizing the activities during Heritage Days weekend...

Kitty | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
South Shore, it was La Traviata I saw at the Calumet Theater. The translation was above the stage--probably considered cheating, but I'm not up on my Italian , so I sure appreciated it. The music was so wonderful, and the performers were excellent. It was part of last years Pine Mountain Music Festival. The photos were nice, guys, I especially liked the line-up--you guys had too much fun! I take it the lone building (house?) at the end of the dirt road is the site of BN-TNG?

Kitty, a while back did you mention that you were looking at buying a Jeep Liberty? I just saw one parked at a local dealership and they look cool! Did you test drive or have an opinion on them? Did you catch the price? (of course maybe it wasn't you and I could be way off on this whole train of thought!) Thanks

Nugget | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| Skipper, I was at the end of the parade on first ave, right in front of Kathy Dover's place, if you know where that is; down from the bowling alley and right across the street from the 'high rise'. My kids really enjoyed the parade and the carnival and it made for a good weekend. Next year my class ('77) is having our 25th on Heritage weekend, so perhaps I'll get to enjoy the parade again. I join those who pass along kudos to the organizers; they did a great job...

Captain America | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| Ah yes my friend, Sheffield's is a fine place to have a beer or two. Your brother, The Depot Man, and I shared many a fine brew between us there. So what other tales did The Depot Man share with you? I seem to have a somewhat squeky clean image to maintain... BTW Former Res, I went to Orlando last weekend for Jimmy Udenberg's wedding--good to see a kid from the neighborhood succeeding in life.

TWO-Z | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| I'M SORRY I DIDN'T GET TO MEET YOU AS WELL NUGGET. I WAS ON THE OPPISITE SIDE OF THE LEGION OF DOOM ON THE DECK EATING PIZZA AND DRINKING BEER DURING THE END OF THE PARADE. WHEN I GO NEXT YEAR MAYBE I WILL CATCH THE PARADE. I ALSO DIDN'T GET TO SEE THE ARTS AND CRAFTS. SO MUCH GOING ON. I MUST AGREE WITH ALL. ALOT OF PEOPLE DID AN EXCELLENT JOB LAST WEEKEND. HATS OFF TO THEM ALL.

Former Res | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| Captain, I still get the Chronicle mailed to me (God knows why...it sucks), and I saw he was getting married. He is one talented individual at what he does. I ran into his dad last time I was in TH and he told me he was working for Disney. I have heard quite a few stories about you and some 'lovely ladies' at numerous establishments. It is good to know that there are people out there that know 'Bar C.P.R.!!!!

Sawbill | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| I would like to find a site with some type of dialectic other than drinking and golf. Not to be offensive, but this site is turning into a good old boy network. It appears that even Kitty is one of the guys. You sound like good friendly folks but when someone suggests a new thread it fades fast unless drinking and golf is included. Drinking and golf are great pastimes but how about other topics? A while back you had an attempt at geo-political concerns. That South Shore person tried to start some space exploration stuff. I noticed he doesn't write often. Kitty asked about a Norwegian flag. That could have gone a long way. The flashback to old cars was fun. TWC and Nugget have good ideas. We folks from further up the shore enjoy the threads but sometime it is hard to follow. How about somebody explaining the honking tree? Being from Tofte I never heard of it. As the kids say wuz up wif dat? Sorry to be fuddy duddy. I really enjoy most of the website. Please excuse the lousy grammar, the passive voice and any misspelled words.

webman | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| Now, now people, be nice. Welcome, Sawbill. It takes a while to get to know some of these characters. I was born and raised in TH and somehow the honking tree was left out of my upbringing. My wife, a non-native told me what it was called when I was in my mid-twenties. Maybe that is why I have been exiled to Arkansas.?!?

Muddy | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| Go for it, Sawbill. Talk about whatever you want to.

|
Falcon Edie | Re: Remember | 07-11-2001 |
| Sawbill, the honking tree is a tree on the Hwy 61 expressway between Larsmont and TH. It stands in the middle of the median and has been honked at for years by all natives cdoming to TH from Duluth, Knife River, Clover Valley or wherever. Hope that explains it a little for you. Kaz, by the way--my brother was one of the people you mentioned in the start of the thread, Steve Larson. He still lives in TH.
|
|
Drifter | Re: Remember | 07-12-2001 |
Sawbill - Stop by the golf course next time your in TH. We'll fill you in more on the folklore of the Honking Tree while talking golf and drinking beer. If you can't find us at the golf course, try the Sidetrack, Cudda's or RW's Drive-in. Seriously, since you're tired of the beer/golf talk, feel free to talk about whatever you'd like. And how do you know Kitty isn't one of the guys???

|
Captasin America | Re: Remember | 07-12-2001 |
| Start a new thread Sawbill! On whatever topic you choose! We're an open-minded group if you give us a chance. Hey Former Res, if we ever have another thread about Random Acts of Foolishness, I'll spill out MY version of a Bar CPR story from my days in Chicago... Jimmy Udenberg works for Universal Studios though, not Disney. I think "The Mouse" is his sworn enemy or something.

Fritz | Re: Remember | 07-12-2001 |
| I’m a long time listener, first time caller. Hey Sawbill. Is it short for Sawbill Landing? My Grandfather was a lumberjack in that area for many years. His name was Oscar Waldamer Hendrickson. We had good friends in Schroeder and we lived in Taconite Harbor when I was very young. Did some hard time in Silver Bay and finished school in TH. I’ve been away a long time and enjoy this BB a great deal. For the most part this seems to be a great bunch but polarized by their age and the time frame in which they grew up in TH. The only one on here that I’ve been able to figure out is T.W.C. It was easy because I remember the car. Anyway, I’ve been reading the archives and this situation happens occasionally. I liken it to writers block. It happens and then someone like you calls attention to it and these good people find away around it. Keep up the good work everyone. I hope Kitty isn’t one of the guys. An important point to remember about the honking tree is that it is a white pine and the only white pine that was left standing during the expressway construction. The white pine played an important part in northern Minnesota's development.

Former Res | Re: Remember | 07-12-2001 |
| Sawbill, this is like watching t.v., if you don't like what you are watching, you change the channel. Start a topic. Two Harbors is a place we call home. We are proud of who we are and where we are from. If you want to "rip" us about what we talk about, or how we live our lives, I am sure there is a forum somewhere else for you to do so.

TWC | Re: Remember | 07-12-2001 |
The last time I ranted about someone knocking the denizens of Arbley World, I made a complete ass of myself, since South Shore has been a very worthy contributor here (and if that isn't a backhanded apology, I don't know what is). So, to Sawbill, I say: Welcome aboard and give us some time. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Of course, you will be subjected to frequent pop quizzes, but I'm sure you'll pass. And a hearty hello to Fritz, who has figured out my not-so-secret identity (I'm considering changing my name to Bruce Wayne, by the way). I think it's only fair that you drop a couple of hints as to your true self. If I figure it out, I won't tell anyone. Really. I swear on a stack of Iowa Basic test bookets.

| Hi and welcome to the new folk - to all you "old folk" - ya sure have been busy the last couple of weeks!! Glad to hear you enjoyed your class reunion Two-Z....I seem to recognize the back of one gents holding up the "bus"....but it's been many years - I could be totally wrong!!! Kitty - are you still lovin' the new job? Torggy, just my personal opinion, but you need to slow down a bit or three - I think it safe to say that all the arbleys miss your words of wisdom!! My three older kids survived their trip to TH - my 'lil bros treated them to all kinds of FUN stuff - Luke went to Encampment for the first time - found a "drop-off hole" - just couldn't get over that one - Jake and Amanda enjoyed 7th Avenue with my mom...and my dad smoked the hell out of some fish - which they gobbled up in no time - (yawn, yawn) well, enough babbling for today - be happy all!

Kaz | Re: Remember | 07-12-2001 |
| To Falcon Edie-Ask your brother Steve Larson if he remembers me-If he graduated for TH in 1968 he was a second baseman and I was a catcher-he and I teamed up throwing out alot of potential base stealers-the shortstop was Larry Otterblad-from newspaper web sites I have found- looks like Larry defected to the rival Silver Bay and coaches about everything there-KAZ

| I feel bad now...(not really)I complimented the page last week and didn't get welcomed. Sawbill comes in with a slam and gets the red carpet treatment. Nugget, I will be there with you next year, as I am also from that fine class of "77"(largest graduating class from THHS). Thought I would throw in some triva. Had to miss Heritage days this year. Did they happen to have a tribute to the army worms in the parade? I understand they are really chowing down this year. Was breakfast at the firehall as good as usual. Only place I know of where you can have someone you graduated with cook for you, unless you married a classmate of course. How was the craft fair? Have a close relative that organized it. Wish I was there!
