Offspring - children - your wonderful children....

My 18 year old son just went out and "got himself" a tattoo - having to wait until he was 18, of course (which was yesterday) - sometimes I find it very difficult to loosen my apron strings.... but what's a parent to do???

Now, I'll have you all know that MY children are perfect, all four of them....I've only had to bail Luke out of jail once so far....for just a minor little thing with drinking involved...as a result he's suspended from all of his athletic activities for the first few weeks or so......

Now, do you think I would have ever put my parents through anything even close to the aforementioned while I was trying to spread my wings and fly? Who, me?? No, not me!! hah.

Torggy email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Happy, I know you were a perfect child. Wow a tattoo already huh? What did he get? We have an unofficial agreement in our family. If the act was performed more than 10 year ago than you are free to talk about it without admonishment. At least it has worked that way with my past actions. We have as yet to see if I will be as open to it as a parent as my parents have been.

For all of you sweltering in the heat. It is 60 degrees here in the northwest corner of the country, with an overcast sky and a hint of rain in the air. Damn it feels good.

onlooker email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
I got all that to look forward to yet. My kids are not quite teenagers yet but I can start to see the defient tendencies comming out. But I'm sure they will be fine because they are perfect kids. It must be the fine parenting huh Happy.

Dr Love email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Who's this Tim asshole? Kicking a guy when he's down, a whole lot of class there. Bring back the Bitter Old Man! Cruiser, I liked your urine post, pay no attention to those dicks behind the curtain. Happy - I bet Uncle Norm has his young nephew beat in the race to be incarcerated at the youngest age. Wasn't Norm in the slammer at 13?

Happy email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Dr. Love - I'm beginning to believe it's in the genes. Sure am glad I was a perfect child and grew to be the perfect parent - my 22 year old son has three tattoos now...I do believe this tattoo thing started when I, going through an "age thing" about 5 years ago, decided to get myself a tattoo - just because I did it, all of a sudden my kids think it's ok for them to do it...I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND!!! Oh, I do believe my son's two uncle's showed my PERFECT son too good a time while he was visiting up north a few weeks ago... a few pats on the back and a few chuckles and Luke came home thinking he was no longer in the doghouse....he really despises some of his rude awakenings! A

hap email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
should say "my son's two uncles - .." one of these days I'll learn how to type.

Fritz email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Five sons here. My oldest is with the 101st Airborne and a real natural born killer. At last count 16 tatoos and just married a 45 year old woman with three kids over twenty and more tatoos than he has. He scares the hell out of me.

hap email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Onlooker, I have no doubt you are rearing your children in nothing less than perfection. And, if there is ever a day that goes by when there may be a tinge of doubt, just ask yourself!

Fred email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
happy, you sound like a pretty cool parent. I'm wondering how people think parenting has changed over the generations, both in good and not so good ways? (I'm not a parent, and I wholeheartedly applaud all those who have taken on the immense responsibility of raising children).

happy email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Fritz, you are scaring the hell out of me! How old is your "no pain" son who married the 45 year old woman? I bet she scares the hell out of you, too! (lol) Skip, my man, do you see lots of tattoos in different places in your line of work??? Talk to me, boy!

Lou Zer email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
I bet Tim and Bassman are the same person.

Bass email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Lou, You got that one wrong!!

BOM come back to us, you must have some thoughts on the difference in raising kids.

Skipper email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Happy, I have seen tattoos where I have only dreamt about.... Fritz, "put silver wings on my son's chest, make him one of America's best, one hundred men will test today, but only three make the Green Beret"...who sang that song, wasn't he a serviceman?

webman email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
My youngest daughter just turned 19. I saw her last Saturday for the first time in about 4 months. She lives 20 miles away, but she is an "independent woman" doing her own thing. Man, what a scary event that was. She shows up to meet us at the local Perkins with her hair about 2 inches long and sticking straight out, dyed a silver-gray color, a butterfly tattooed on her shoulder, and a stud in her upper lip. Whew!

Weird thing is, her sister is only 14 months older than she is and doesn't feel a need to do any of that. Funny how two kids can turn out so differently from one another.

Me and my better half decided that we would be happy that the "wild child" was basically ok and that she was still willing to spend some time with the old parents. That lip stud will take a little getting used to though.

webman email icqRe: Offspring07-31-2001
Damn! Everytime I post I close before saying Happy Birthday to Torggy. So here it is: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TORGGY

Skipper email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
I'm guilty too Torg, Happy belated Birthday! Webby at least she isn't a Viking fan....

Fred email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
I heard on the radio this morning about Korey Stringer dying of heat stroke after a Vikings practice yesterday. Wow. I've often said "I'm dying of heat stroke" in jest during unusual TH heatwaves, but this made me take pause and remember people shouldn't overdo it in the heat, especially those of you who usually have hot weather.

Skipper email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Arbleyites, please don't think I was being flippant when I wrote that to Webby, I really didn't hear about the Stringer thing till now.....

Fritz email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Skipper, I think it was Barry Sadler who sang "The Ballad of the Green Beret"

TWO-Z email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
IT IS A SAD DAY. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY PRACTICED IN THAT HEAT.

Nugget email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Fritz, you are correct. My dad used to play that album all the time...

Nugget email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
On the front page of the St. Paul sports section for Monday is a picture of Corey Stringer with a garden hose to the back of his neck cooling off during practice, along with a caption detailing the heat and humidity the players practiced in. How spooky is that? You do wonder how, with all those medical people involved, practice could go on. I'm doing some landscape work at my daughter's school and the District would not even give me access to the grounds because of the heat yesterday. So why is it that practice went on? Why couldn't medical personnel step in and say its getting too dangerous? I just don't get it.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
NUGGET, SO TRUE. IS IT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY?

Nugget email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
I really don't know, TWO-Z. I would guess its about money and the fact that Denny likes a short camp so I would guess they feel pressured to use all the time they have regardless of the circumstances. And I would guess there's a bit of machismo involved as well. Altho I can't believe any of them are feeling particularly macho today. Funny how tragedy and stupidity are always so closely linked.

Torggy email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001

Thanks for the continued condolences guys. You are all great. Please, enough already.

Must be a tough thing for the rest of the Viking players and staff. Everyone thinking about what they could have done different. Hindsight is always 20-20. I would imagine that some leeway is considered because athletes at that level are supposedly in better shape than the rest of us. That is being reevaluated today I bet.

No offense ment but suddenly some of the actions that my 18 year old has preformed seem pretty tranquil. She has long beautiful hair, no tattoos and no strange piercings. That could change though I suppose, and I do have another daughter that is 11 and very independant.

Have a great day. Stay out of the heat!

TWC email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
According to an Associated Press story, Stringer vomited three times during a Tuesday workout, but he did not seek help from the trainer after practice had ended.

What a terrible shame. I'm sure the fallout from his death will be long-lasting on any level (emotional, legal, to name two) you care to name.

Nugget email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
When I was in basic training in Alabama the doctors would cancel physical training if the temp went above 105, and physicians would check us out during the day if there was a potential for heat-related problems. I don't see how its a case of 20/20 hindsight when the general population has been getting warnings about this heatwave for weeks. And I would not consider the average lineman in the NFL, who is encouraged to carry loads of extra weight, to be in good shape, especially in only the 2nd day of camp and hauling around football gear.

Fred email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Sometimes it seems easy to ignore the signs right in front of us. Stringer obviously wasn't feeling good during practice but chose not to heed the signs and stop practicing...why? Probably a combination of peer/coach pressure and a feeling of being invincible or "working through the pain". Whatever the reason, I sure hope others will take the signs more seriously.

Wasn't there a wave of heat related deaths a few years back in Chicago? It certainly makes me appreciate our natural air conditioner, Lake Superior.

Ras email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
It is not the heat. It is the stupidity.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
THEY HAVE HIS STORY AT: WWW.STARTRIBUNE.COM

Captain America email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Well, this thread sure has taken a morbid turn for the worse. I don't think you can truly blame anybody for Korey Stringer's death. Sure they could've canceled training camp, but don't they train in Florida and Arizona this time of year too? It's just sad on so many levels...

On a lighter note, I don't have kids! Trish Stratus and I haven't decided whether or not to have any yet, either. We're a couple of cowards!

Cruiser, I tee off at 12:15pm on Friday and will be at the VFW with Cory D and Doctore Jones around 5pm I'm sure.

Drifter email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Regarding Stringer, it's really too bad. People are upset (rightfully so) because a young man with a wife and small child has died and the death could have been avoided. It is easy now to say what everyone should have done. Part of me says, hell yes, it was too hot for them to practice. Another part of me says that it is NFL training camp and this wasn't the first large man to have gone through a workout like this in warm weather. I'm sure that there are many teammates, coaches, trainers, etc who feel awful today and will second guess themselves for the rest of their lives. If Stringer wasn't so big, maybe this wouldn't have happened. If we didn't work him out so hard, this wouldn't have happened. If it wasn't so terribly hot, this wouldn't have happened. On a lighter note, I know one thing -- if the Vikes held training camp at Halsted Field, no one would suffer from heat stroke. Good luck to everyone golfing this weekend. Wish I could be there. Skipper - have a VFW Bloody Mary for me....

TWO-Z email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
SKIP AND CRUISER - GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND. ARE YOU GOING TO THE KAYAK EVENT AS WELL ON SAT.?

PAY UP THAT BAR TAB SKIP SO I CAN HAVE ONE ON YOU. LOOKS LIKE WE WILL ALL HAVE THE PERFECT WEATHER FOR IT THIS WEEKEND. ARE YOU GETTING IN THE ONE IN TH FRED?

YES DRIFTER IT IS SAD AND THERE ARE SO MANY WHAT IF'S. THE ONLY BUMMER ABOUT THE WHOLE THING IS THAT IT'S TOO LATE.

P.S. WHY WOULD NOBODY SUFFER AT HALSTAD'S FIELD? INSIDE JOKE?

Nugget email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
TWO-Z, it might be the 40 degree 40 mile an hour wind coming off the lake...

Drifter email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
I'm glad someone understood it.

Nugget email icqRe: Offspring08-01-2001
Obviously, TWO-Z never spent any miserable time on that hallowed ground. ABC national news' lead story tonight is the current heat wave, the death of Stringer and how people can protect themselves.

Pond Boys email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Our favorite makeout song was REO Speedwagon's "Keep Pushin' On".Once my brother lost his glasses and was kissing the head rest.

onlooker email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
That's to bad someone had to die for the game.

Did not check out the board yesterday. The night before gave me problems. We got some serious rain and my NEW roof started leaking. Anyway, got my girl to claen the house (somewhat) and my boy to mow the lawn (somewhat) and I looked at the roof.

Bought my son a youth shotgun a couple of days ago. It's only a .410 but I think an adult gun would be better. It is so light that it did kick pretty hard and he only took one shot with it. I can only hope he does not get scared off and start flinching. He loves to shoot but I think he got more than he thought he was going to get. At least there are no tattoos yet. Just some pierced ears on the girl.

I checked out the pics from Heritage Days, did not know the magic bus was an RV. Just traded my 34' in last night for a 5th wheel. If the wife don't like that, I will have to go back to a tent cause that is what we started with, then a truck camper, a travel trailer, then the moho, now a 5th wheel. She's killin me.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
SORRY ONLOOKER, BUT GUNS ARE ANOTHER CONTROVERSY.

LATEST WEATHER REPORT FOR MY TOUNAMENT TOMORROW, HOT AND HUMID. YOUR RIGHT NUGGET, I FORGET ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WEATHER BY THE LAKE.

Skipper email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Two- Z, where are you golfing? Good Luck and remember a foot wedge is legal on most courses, we are leaving this afternoon for the homeland, everyone have a safe weekend and Drifter I will salute you when I go by the woods on #3....

Torggy email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Have fun in Arrowhead country Skip. Here's to a safe trip, clink.

Onlooker, I think the 410 is just right for a young man. He might have to hold it a little tighter. Lots of young shooters that have been shooting 22's have a farily lax grip. I never had a boy to take shooting and although I have taken my youngest out several times she shows little intrest. Did you get the leak fixed? I like motor homes myself. You can use the space while you are going down the road. Have fun with the new 5th wheel.

happy email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Ya know, I dislike it so much when I wake up, pretty much "happy" - and then start to look around...all of a sudden I am "please pick up this" - "would you please put away your...." - "why is this still here" - "damn it, get this shit out of here!" - until I have turned into this ugly ogre, first thing in the morning!! Well, now that I've gotten that off my chest, I may just take a little trip up to see the folks - it's only 650 miles away - could be there before midnight....Maybe just a "Calgon" will have to do ... HAVE A GREAT DAY ALL!!! (yes, that was sheer bitterness in my tone of "type."

onlooker email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Torggy, I loved the motor. Can you explain to me why my wife liked it when we bought it but now has hated it for about two years. I hate to get anybody mad at me but as I say "Women, you can't live with them, pass the beer nuts"...

Got the guy cheching the roof tonight.

Have a good one all.

TWC email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
If y'all are going golfing in the City Tourney (aka the Shortstop) this weekend, you oughta appoint a pool reporter to keep us long-distance Arbleyites up to date.

At any rate, have a fine time, duffers. Watch out for random moose on the golf course.

Torggy email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Wow! Happy (or should we say Grumpy) what a morning huh? Is the heat getting to ya? The paper says that Duluth was hot yesterday too. Cheer up life is good.

Onlooker better watch out with those beer nuts they can make a mess ya know.

Bassman email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Torggy, If the wife doesn't like the 5th Wheel, maybe you should try this super breakfast:

Your kid is on a box of Wheaties

Your mistress is on the cover of Playboy

And your wifes picture is on a milk carton.

Huh? email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
I don't get it

onlooker email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
Good idea bassman. I've thought of that before. If only you would'nt get caught.

hap email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
not funny, bassboy - i mean bassman.

Ernie email icqRe: Offspring08-02-2001
