South Shore | Re: Muzak II | 07-17-2001 |
| I went to the Rolling Stones concert at the old Met Center ( where the Northstars played) in 1972. Stevie Wonder was the warm up. One of my Army buddies came up from Chicago and we hustled some "restricted view" seats. We were behind the stage. In those days people would roll joints, light 'em up and pass 'em down the row. We were feelin' pretty good. Dry mouth was cured by a smuggled bota filled with cheap wine. Mick was strutting like a rooster and doing "Brown Sugar" when my eyes started to water and the air got a little tight. The pleasant odor of cannibis sativa was overpowered by a different smell. One I had not smelled since basic training. Apparently, while the crowd inside was rockin' the crowd outside decided to crash the gate. Bloomington's boys in blue tear gassed the crashers and some of the C.S. gas floated into the arena. No one got too shook up and no one got hurt. The concert went on. Weird, the stuff you remember. "Well you can't always get what you want...but if you try sometime... you just might find... you get what you need".

Well, since Falcon Edie won't tell this story, I will. Look for us on one of the Court TV shows soon. The year was 1977. Falcon Edie came to visit me at the U of M. I took her to a bar called Uncle Sam's, which was a disco (Yeah, I know, I didn't like disco. I also wanted to dance. Sometimes, you just go with the flow and make the best of it.) Anyway, we're there. Now, I don't know how many of you actually remember what discos were like. But lights are flashing everywhere. Going down a set of stairs, equipped with flashing lights, Falcon Edie stepped the wrong way. She sprained her ankle. So I had to carry her out of there. So much for dancing like a son of a bitch. The funny thing is, Uncle Sam's became Prince's big hangout in the 80s. It changed names, of course. But I always tell Falcon Edie that she's one of the few people to sprain her ankle in Prince's club.

| I was going to say isn't Uncle Sam's First Avenue now? Chev do you remember Boyd's on the River? being a young hick from the northshore I thought this was the greatest thing I had ever seen!...multiple bars in one building...Happy, I don't figure skate but thought I would parlay a move or two into a dance step.....

South Shore | Re: Muzak II | 07-17-2001 |
| The U of Minnesota had a "Welcome Week" concert in 1973. A bunch of us went to see Sean Phillips, Albert King, Loggins and Messina, etc. It was a the old football stadium. We were sitting up high in the bleachers. My kid sister (aged 17) came along. We were all rockin' and rollin' and drinkin' and smokin'. I look over at my baby sister. She's got her tounge shoved down some guys throat. She's giving him a lap dance. She is drunker than a skunk. She stood up and started dancing her way down the bleachers. I try to stop/protect her. She starts swinging at me. I grab her and she passes out in my arms. I pick her up and carry her down the bleachers. People are jeering me. I was the bad guy stopping his little sister from having fun. I get her out to my '68 Plymouth Fury and put her in the back seat. She proceeds to expell the contents of her belly all over the interior of my car. My date was not impressed. My sister spent the night at my apartment. I couldn't let her go to my parents house. Now it seems pretty funny. I still tease her about it. She is 45...I am 50. I think I'll call her right now...and tell her I'm gonna tell Mom and Dad. Okay folks...I'll stop for now.

| Skip, I do not remember that place. I do remember a bar on the river called Procna (help me on the spelling here if I'm wrong) on Main. There used to be a tire tied on a tree in front of the place, which came in handy if you'd had a few too many beers and wanted to risk falling into a filthy body of water. Fortunately, nobody ever did.

webman | Re: Muzak II | 07-17-2001 |
| I also claimed to hate disco, but some of it was fun, and you pretty much had to go to those places to dance. I think the last time I actually attempted to dance in a for-real disco, was in 1976 or 1977 at some place up in Bemidji. I had been watching John Travolta and I figured I could dance on my knees too. Damn I was smooth! Until I split my pants. That REALLY impressed 'em.

Fred | Re: Muzak II | 07-17-2001 |
Wow, great thread! As I was reading from the last few days I laughed out loud several times. It's interesting to read about different tastes in music. I missed the disco era, so that may be why I like a little "Brick House" & "Saturday Night Fever". I think rap is often generalized by the bad press it gets from the media (ie, cop killers, drugs, etc) Christian rap has a positive message, but some people need more of a melody. I am a fan of Chicago, Journey, Barenaked Ladies, James Taylor, Amy Grant & many Contemporary Christian artists. My guilty pleasure...Barry Manilow & the boy bands (tucking the empty beer cans being thrown). I just dig harmony. My first concert was REO Speedwagon at the DECC.Capt. THanks SO much for the golf match on Monday. Quite enjoyable. You should be peaking just in time for the Classic. Unfortunately I lost my autographed ball on #2..but I'll go look for it! Now playing: soundtrack from thirtysomething

| One brisk spring Saturday morning many moons ago, Patti Anderson and I decided we would go for a walk - we started singing "The lions Sleep Tonight.." (or is it lion sleeps....) and just kept singing and singing...we wound up in Knife River. Being too tired to walk back home and nightfall not far away, we had to call home for a ride - it was either Bucko or my dad who finally showed up ... that was a long 8 mile drive - both got grounded after our little singing escapade. Parents..

Drifter | Re: Muzak II | 07-18-2001 |
| Fred mentioned REO Speedwagon. They were a great band in the early to mid 70's before they "sold out" and their goal seemed to change from pumping out good music to pumping out hits. "157 Riverside Avenue..."

TWC | Re: Muzak II | 07-18-2001 |
| Well, as long as we're on an REO riff here, I saw that band way back in 1972 at the Arena (as it was then known). REO was the opening act for the Guess Who. That was so long ago, that Kevin Cronin had not joined for the first time as lead singer. The album REO II was the official soundtrack album for my spring break trip to Florida in college. Good version of "Little Queenie" on that one. Trivia question: Who was the original lead singer for REO? I have it at home on the back of the first album - the vinyl version, of course.

Captain America | Re: Muzak II | 07-18-2001 |
| The Clapton concert was sometimes inspired and a lot of fun. During the "oldies" though, (Layla, Cocaine, Bell Bottom Blues) he seemed to just be going through the motions. Blah, blah, blah, next song...but I can't blame him. When he played the newer material he wailed away with a constant fury. He came out and played two songs for an encore, including "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which I've always considered more of a Kermit the Frog hit then EC...but it was cute. When there was no 2nd encore the crowd actually started booing. I really laughed at that one. They were booing Eric Clapton! Ha! We all expected a 2nd encore because he never played his new hit "Superman Inside" the whole night. All in all though, a good show. Probably the last chance I'll have to see him, so I'm glad we went.

| First of all, Skipper can figure skate like a son of a bitch. Second, REO's live album: "You Get What You Play For" is my all-time favorite album. Third, "That 70's Show"...I watched it last night, is one of the best shows on the tube. Fez, the foreign exchange student, reminds me a lot of a young Skipper. Put a thin, wispy moustache on him and they could be one and the same.

Drifter | Re: Muzak II | 07-18-2001 |
| TWC - I don't think he was REO Speedwagon's orginal singer, but wasn't Michael Murphy with the band for awhile back in the early 70's? Two great REO songs -- "Golden Country" and "Son of a Poor Man". While talking music, I must mention The Drifting Cowboys band. That was the name of Hank Williams, Sr's first band. Now that was country music, my friends. Two-Z: I hope things are okay up in your neck of the woods...

| Well, since no one answered the REO trivia question I posed earlier, I will spill it. It was Terry Luttrell, who sang lead vocals on the group's first album, and then disappeared forever. I hereby declare myself the winner of the trivia contest, and award myself as much beer as I care to drink. Thank you very much.

| happy, funny you should ask about getting tired listening...just last night I had a friend in who'd been hittin' the Bud Light pretty hard. Anyway, she started every sentence with "In the world of..." as in "In the world of Copper Harbor..." or "In the world of dogs..." or "In the world of berry picking..." I thought if I hear that phrase one more time I'm gonna scream, but I just listened and washed glasses. That was the first time I've been disgruntled. However, there was a guy in from Iowa who was really interesting to talk to, so it balances out. happy, where the heck are you that it's so hot? I'm sure you've told but I'm not sure I remember correctly...Arizona? Personally, I can't wait for Fall...I love Fall clothes (corduroy skirts, flannel shirts, sweaters, ect.). Not that I don't like summer, I love it, but it's been so darn humid, everything is damp. Geez, if I ramble on anymore, it'd be better if I go to the chat room!

TWC | Re: Muzak II | 07-19-2001 |
Hell, Kitty, what you think of Iowa doesn't bother me. The fact that you find me uninteresting, though, is devastating. Anyway, back to the topic. I read a story today (I believe on Salon.com) that the music biz is going through some tough times. CD sales are off, and several artists (Paul Simon to name one) are not drawing well on the road. All of this has some executives worried. Now, I know next to nothing about the music business. On the other hand, I do know that CDs are not exactly cheap (unless you buy used, or through a club, or get music via the Internet) and the cost of attending a concert is obscene. So perhaps people are becoming reluctant to spend the sort of money the music industry wants them to spend.

| Now it is really late but here is my input on my favorite music. My favorite singer is Harry Chapin. His songs "all my life's a circle" and "Flying high in my taxi taking tips and getting stoned" have always ranked high on my list. My favorite song though is by Gerry and the Pacemakers "Ferry cross the Mersey for this lands the place I love". I have tried to lisen to the new music but it just does not intrest me. The old stuff I have been listening to for 35 years though and is starting to get a little old. Speaking of old I am and have to get some sleep.

TWC | Re: Muzak II | 07-20-2001 |
Welcome back, Torggy. Tell those cops to use hand signals for a week or two so you can get some R&R. Harry Chapin was a great storyteller. My college roomie had his live album, and it was outstanding. I also know what Torggy means about some songs getting old. I think some music just doesn't wear well over time. Other tunes simply don't speak to your emotional and/or philosophical outlook as well as they did 20 or 30 years ago. And radio makes you sick and tired of some bands or specific songs. All you can do, if you love music, is to keep an ear open to fresh songs and ideas, and that doesn't mean the crap pumped out to satisfy the teens. There are good artists producing high-quality music. It just takes a little searching (usually on alternative radio stations or satellite services like MusicChoice) to find it.
