| What's happening with the re-building of Millers Cafe? One of the best Walleye dinners in the upper north! Sure hope it is up and running when we come back in July of 2002. | ||

| Who was a better pizza cutter, Sputty or John Hassett? | ||
| Fred | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| Two-Z, Dick's Pizza is located just a few doors down from the American Legion..go out the back door of the Legion, take a left, walk to the end of the alley, take another left and you're there! (was it the old Moose Lodge??) They may even be having pizza by the slice for sale during the weekend festivities. If you get a chance, you should have some, you won't be disappointed! | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| FRED, I THOUGHT THAT WAS CUDDA'S PIZZA? IS IT THE SAME PIZZA WITH A DIFFRENT NAME? AND YES I GOT MY TEE TIMES FOR SATURDAY. THANK YOU THOUGH. GOING GOLFING INSTEAD OF PARADING. DIDN'T DO TOO BAD LAST SATURDAY. IT WAS A BIT WARM THOUGH. LOOKS TO BE A NICE WEEKEND EXCEPT FOR FRIDAY. LOOKING FORWARD TO GOLFING THERE. HOPEFULLY I WON'T BE TOO HUNG OVER. | ||
| Smeltfry | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| I have to go with Sputty as a cutter. Hassett was better at delivering beer and pie, and mingling with the customers. Sputty entertained behind the counter. | ||
| Pond boys | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
Bill Sikkink was a one helluva pizza delivery guy. Tom Smith once forgot to cut our pizza at Sidetrack ![]()

| Two-Z, Cudda sold out to Dick quite a few years ago (ten or fifteen maybe?). Same recipe though. No Ski-Do under the porch Former Res--it sitting up at Camp Virgin comfortably rusting near the wood pile. A fine retirement for such a trusty steed. Drifter, I suspect I am one of the only people in the world who still likes Miller High Life. "The Champange of Bottled Beers." Last time I was in Superior I had a $1 draft mug of MHL at the Anchor! Whatta deal! Maybe Miller's:The Next Generation could import some of our ideas for the new Big Noise... | ||
| Fred | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
Two-Z, I'm golfing on Sunday, so leave some birdies & pars out there for me, okay? It does look like a nice weekend, I hope you have a blast at your reunion.
| TWO-Z | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| THANKS CAPTAIN. I WILL BE GOING TO DICK'S THIS WEEKEND. CAN'T WAIT. I'LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO FRED. IT MAY DEPEND ON MY CONDITION. I'M SURE I'LL HAVE A BLAST THIS WEEKEND. REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. WE'LL SEE WHAT I HAVE TO SAY AFTER. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| Captain - Ahh, the Anchor Bar. Where some of my classmates (I looked too young) would buy beer when they were 16. Let's hope the weather holds for the coming weekend. No fog, please!! | ||
| Captain America | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| Ever partake of a "GalleyBuster" at The Anchor Drifter? I believe they advertise it as, "A burger as big as your plate." ZZ--bring back a partial listing of some of the Class of '81 All-Stars that appear at your re-union! That would make for an interesting tale... | ||
| Drifter | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| Captain - I never actually went into the Anchor Bar. I just waited outside in the car while my older-looking friends went in to buy a case of Miller High Life. "Miller Stands Clear" | ||

| A word to the wise coming up to the Legion this weekend, the upstairs will be packed, slip downstairs to the basement where the lines are much shorter, this worked great for me last year.....Oh, wait I guess that was my reunion down there, never the less promise Cruiser or Two Z you will get them one upstairs and drink for free all night..... | ||
| Drifter | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-03-2001 |
| Will Ivan be at the Legion for Heritage Days?? I will only attend if Ivan will be present. Two-Z: I'll look for someone from your class donning the "Two-Z" name tag. Skipper: See you Friday night at the Street Dance. I'll look for you in front of Ray's Shoe Emporium, dancin' like a son of a bitch.... | ||
| Beer man | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-04-2001 |
| Beer's No. 1 day is the 4th This just in from the National Beer Wholesalers Association: 7.5 percent of all the beer sold in the United States is sold for the Fourth of July, making today the No. 1-ranked day for drinking beer. But the association didn't stop after noting that sales record. It commissioned a study to find out what people like to eat while drinking their beer today. More men (32 percent of them) prefer hot dogs and hamburgers with their beer than ribs, pizza, seafood or sandwiches. Women's top choice of food to eat with beer (with 25.8 percent of those surveyed weighing in) is ribs, the association reports. But 21.1 percent of men and 35.6 percent of women surveyed didn't give any preference at all. | ||

OH YOU GUYS ARE WITTY. IT'S THE 4TH OF JULY AND I'M WORKING. UGH. I SWAPPED FOR FRIDAY. I THOUGHT I'D HAVE MORE FUN ON FRIDAY INSTEAD OF TODAY. I'LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO CAPTAIN ON THAT ALL-STAR LIST. I WILL HAVE THE CAMERA AS WELL BUT I'M SURE SKIPPER AND DRIFTER WILL BE DODGING THAT. I WOULD HAVE SOMETHING ON THEM. SKIPPER, WHATS WITH THE FREE DRINKS ALL NITE? YOUR SUCH A SCAMMER. | Bassman, from what I've heard, the current owner of Miller's is planning on rebuilding, but it won't be called Miller's...something like Homestyle Cafe??..but I don't think ground has been broken yet. I'll see what else I can find out. Hope everybody had a nice 4th.
| onlooker | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-05-2001 |
| Well, I rolled through TH on Monday and yesterday. No one tossed a beer at me. (and I thought you guys cared!!) Filled out on Rainbows though. Two more days of work and I am out of cell phone range for two weeks. Going camping in Brainerd for a week. Blow the dust off my sticks and play 18 one day. Coming home and going back through the fine town of TH on the 17th to fill out on trout again. Don't know if the big red box will be on the back or not. Hope everyone had a good 4th. Is this pizza place on the main drag or what? Sounds like I need to stop there in a couple of weeks with all the bragging of how good it is, sounds like a must try. Had the best I've had in a long time up in Walker a couple of weeks ago. (pizza that is) | ||
| Torggy | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-05-2001 |
| Been really busy with family, work and a sputtering computer. Barely have had time to read the postings. Thanks for your concern Skipper and Drifer. Found this in the Duluth paper today. Thought you might be interested. Honoring Ray Widen Two Harbors resident, former owner of Ray's Shoes and active community member Ray Widen will be honored tonight from 5 to 6 at the Lakeview National Golf Course. In honor of this former member of the Chamber of Commerce and former member of the Board of Directors for the Lake Bank in Two Harbors, the Lake Bank has built flower and shrub gardens around the new putting green at the golf course. During a social hour today, a plaque at the golf course will be dedicated to Widen. The words on the bronze plaque sum up what Widen means to Two Harbors: "In recognition of Ray Widen's unselfish dedication to community service. Presented by your friends at the Lake Bank.'' Enjoy | ||
| Bassman | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-05-2001 |
| Fred, Thanks for the info and looking forward to your follow-up. Anyone know if Iver Widen is any relation to Ray Widen?? | ||
| Elixar | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-07-2001 |
| Iver Widen is the cousin of Ray Widen. He is really a second cousin, but they play it down. | ||

| Nugget | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Fred and Bassman, I was in TH last weekend for Heritage Days and the word I get on Miller's is that there is no plan to rebuild and the owner put up a sign saying it would be rebuilt just so people would stop asking. If it was covered by insurance I cannot see what the holdup is. As busy as the cafes were last weekend, I think if I owned the Miller location I would have stood there all weekend cooking on an open fire; there were a lot of hungry tourists and Judy's and Blackwoods just could not handle the traffic. Somebody from the 70's or early 80's help me out. I seem to remember Cudda's pizza located on the first floor of the Agate Hotel building, not where Dick's Pizza is now located. Is my memory that bad? | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| NUGGET, YOU ARE CORRECT. CUDDA HAD THE PIZZA PLACE ON THE MAIN LEVEL OF WHERE THE AGATE HOTEL IS AT NOW. BEFORE THAT EVEN I THINK IT WAS UP ON 7TH AVE WHERE THE PHONE COMPANY IS NOW. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF ONE OF THE PIZZA'S THIS WEEKEND. LIFE IS GOOD. | ||
| Captain America | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Trish Stratus and I returned from Florida last night safe and sound. Teri (Udenberg) McDanald passed along her sincere regrets about not being able to make the Class of 1981 reunion... So just how was the blessed event? Did the Class of 91 show up in force also? | ||
| Former Res | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Captain...When is the wedding? Is it in TH or elsewhere? | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| WAS THE CLASS OF 91 THERE? SHOWS YA WHAT KIND OF SHAPE I WAS IN. I'M STILL NOT ALL THERE YET. I WOULD HAVE TO VENTURE THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. | ||
| Fred | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Nugget, thanks for the info on Miller's...seems a little odd though. I wonder if he'll sell the property. Two-Z, glad to see you made it back alive. Did you hit the course? I played on Sat. & Sun...thanks for letting me have a few birdies! Captain, Happy to read you're back! I think the class of 91 had their reunion at the golf course Sat. night. I think some of them were golfing on Sun. I golfed out of my mind on Sat., but alas, Sun. was back to normal. But it was fun! | ||
| Kitty | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Two-Z, did Skipper ever point out Ivan to you? Is he as handsome as he is in the photos from Indian Lake? Did Skipper buy you a beer, or is really a cheap son-of-a-bitch? Do tell!!! | ||
| two x | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| The Millers fire was set. It was arson. The owner did it. He was losing money so he burned the place down. It is not going to be rebuilt. The sign is a joke. It was not put up by the property owner. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
I have also returned form Heritage Days in one piece. Had an excellent time -- got a chance to meet Two-Z, chatted with Falcon Edie's sister, played golf (sucked) , fished the big lake (no fish) , watched the parade, took a ride in the Magic School Bus, etc etc. Webby - I just sent a bunch of photos to your Arbley address, including one of the now controversial sign that sits where Miller's Cafe used to be....
| TWC | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Vacation is over, boys and girls. I return to work tomorrow, having had my house reroofed, my family come to town and my sanity nearly lost. Just call me Clark Griswold. I would suggest that, if nothing is built on the Miller's site by next year, a TH restaurant retrospective should be held on the site during Heritage Days. Big-ass french fries and fresh pies (ala Oscar's Lunch) should be served, along with Millers-style coffee. If the owner doesn't like it, we'll just kidnap him and drop him off at Indian Lake. He'll never be found again. | ||
| webman | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| New photos from Heritage Days, courtesy of Drifter have been posted. There are some new links at the bottom of the message board that will direct you there. Thank you Drifter, Nugget, TWO-Z, and b-loop for all the photos. | ||
| Falcon Edie | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-09-2001 |
| Great Heritage Days photos!! The water tower is right by my mom's house, the Dixie Star was a blast from the past and who could not get misty eyed at BN-TNG site. Drifter-where did you see my sister--most likely not at the Legion of Doom. Must have been the parade. Again, thanks for the great pictures! | ||
| Torggy | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
| Wow! Great shot of the "Honking Tree". Takes me back to when I first started comming to this site. Thanks Drifty!! | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
| GREAT PICTURES DRIFTER. I HAVE TO GO THROUGH MINE AND E-MAIL WEBMAN SOME. MAYBE TONITE? I THINK I'M STARTING TO COME OUT OF THE FOG. SORRY KITTY, I DON'T WANT TO SPILL TOO MUCH ABOUT THE GUYS. YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND OUT IF SKIP IS A CHEAP SON OF A BITCH ON YOUR OWN AND IF IVAN'S CUTE. I WILL SAY ONE THING THOUGH, THAT SKIPPER CAN DANCE LIKE A SON OF A BITCH. HAD A BLAST WITH THE GUYS. FRED I LOVED THE COURSE. JUST AWESOME. ALTHOUGH I THINK 18 HOLES WAS A BIT MUCH FOR THAT DAY. PROBLY ONLY DO 9 NEXT YEAR. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
| More details from Heritage Days: The weather was very nice -- a little rain Friday afternoon, but it cleared up in time for the street dance downtown on Friday night. Saturday was fantastic -- low 80s and sunny. Perfect for golf in the morning, parade viewing in the afternoon, and fishing later on. I agree with those of you who say the course is nice. They have really done a great job with it since expanding to 18. Long distances between holes, though, so I would suggest renting a cart (especially if you were at the Legion the night before). I have to nominate a class of '81er as the weekend's MVP. He managed to make his 7:07am tee-time an Saturday while partying at least until 3:30am. Somehow he got up and golfed 9 ---- without a cart!! Falcon Edie -- I ran into your little sister at the Legion Friday night. I did not see Skipper dancing at the street dance Friday, but he did entertain a few of us with his dancing skills Saturday outside of the Legion, as Two-Z mentioned. It was obvious he had been practicing prior to the big weekend. Some of the best moves I've ever seen. Anyway, it was really a good time up there. I've been taking the family up every Heritage Days for the last few years and we always have a great time. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
| One more thing..... the army worms are now turning into moths. Saturday night there were moths covering every building with a light on in downtown TH. Nasty. | ||
| Fred | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
Drifter, thanks for the photos..very cool, and I live here. I thought the parade was pretty good..it's cool to see the local support in the parade and lining the streets. The kiddies still love to race for the candy. I never did make it to the craft/carnival area. I thought the band at the street dance was good, too! Too bad there was no one dancing. I think it was a successful weekend all around. I definitely appreciate all the hard work that went into putting it all together.

| Former Res--August 17th, 2002 in the Big Two at Superior Shores. I'd like to keep the location somewhat secret though, in hopes that the town drunks won't show up and crash the reception looking for free beer... Who was the band playing at the street dance? Freightliner??? | ||

| Hey Former Res, when I lived in Chicago one summer, I knew 3 Two Harborites down in the Chicago area. One was a famous gymnast. One was a stock broker type. They both left Chicago... Are you related to either one? Or perhaps the third friend (who may be moving to LA soon?) | ||
| Skipper | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
| This is the first time I have witnessed the parade, what a hell of a nice job someone does, whomever does all the leg work deserves a Stanko Home Brew, I have just returned from the northland and have to say this trip was to short, Sat. golfed 9(seen Drifter and Ivan), Sunday went 18 with Cruiser, Monday went to Silver Bay course(what a unknown gem that is), it was also fun to meet Two Z, we were all treated to a ride on the Magic Bus(make your plans next year)my only regret is I did not talk to Nugget(where were you standing?) | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
| LUCKY GUY SKIPPER. YOU REALLY HAD A LONG WEEKEND. ALREADY MAKING PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR. ONLY GONNA DO 9 HOLES ON SATURDAY. LOVE THE COURSE. HAD A BLAST WITH YOU GUYS. JUST E-MAILED A PICTURE TO WEBMAN FROM THE WEEKEND. IT IS AN INTERESTING ONE. STAY TUNED. | ||
| webman | Re: Millers Cafe | 07-10-2001 |
TWO-Z's non-incriminating photo is posted. I lightened it up so maybe we could recognize some of the asses. Could it be their best side? They could have at least bent over and cracked a smile. ![]()

It does look like a nice weekend, I hope you have a blast at your reunion.
