I started this thread so the discussion can continue. Due to a scheduleing screw-up I found myself home for an hour but now I got to go. Carry-on

By the way there Slick Willie, Tricky Dick was not my buddy. I voted for some guy in the DFL that wanted to legalize marijuana.

Nugget email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
Torggy, I actually got to meet both Clean Gene and the good senator from South Dakota so my liberal bases are covered. As for underestimating Gov (I mean President) Bush, we'll have to see. Many of our recent Presidents have come from State Houses with varying degrees of foreign policy success; Clinton, Reagan and Carter to name just a recent few. The difference between them and Bush as I see it is that all the others had shown some basic curiosity about how the world worked before they assumed the presidency. Carter had been in the military, Clinton had studied overseas and was well-versed although inexperienced, and Reagan, unlike Bush, governed a state where the Governor actually matters, unlike Texas where the Lt. Gov. in many ways has more power than the Gov. But I fault Bush for failure to prepare and for a lack of curiosity. He's in the White House merely because dad was; he could never have done this on his own. We'll see the effect of his on-the-job training as we go. I don't see him as the leader he professes to be; it takes more to be a leader than to just declare yourself one. In the end, I hope you are correct and that I have underestimated him. That way, the country is in better hands and I will have accomplished the impossible. On a seperate note, your job sounds pretty cool...

Captain America email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
Wow! Lot's of heated discussion today!

Southshore--if you're out there I'd be real interested to hear you weigh-in on the US foreign policy (current or otherwise) and I don't care how "long-winded" you would get!

As to the other topics, you may have a point Torggy that our money goes to Europe more because that's where our ancestors are from...but we keep saving their asses militarily and ecomonically with no real thanks. Did they even pay back the money we "loaned" them on the Marshall Plan?

I hope I'm wrong about W as well Nugget. I just don't think he will be up to the job. Clinton had personal faults, but I think he was good for the country as a leader. Maybe W will grow into the job, who knows? But I'm not optimistic.

Nugget email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
Torggy and Captain, there is a pretty good article on the subject of the Bsh brain/no brain debate at Time.com. See the article by Rick Stengel. He includes the oft quoted thought that Bush is like Pres Eisenhower in that perhaps he misleads the press with some clever country bumpkin thing...my god, Eisenhower ran D Day, last I looked. The closest comparison is that Bush got D's at Yale. In any case, I thought the article was worth a read...

Captain America email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
Interesting article Nugget. It just reinforces my belief that I don't think much of W but will give him the benefit of the doubt for now...Maybe Agats could read and comment as well?

Captain America email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
Hey Skipper--how are you related to the Class of '77 State golfer?

Drifter email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
My, my. We just finished my daughter's 4th birthday party and I find myself catching up on the posts in here. Fifteen minutes ago I was scooping ice cream onto paper "Barbie" plates and now I'm knee deep in foreign affairs. For whatever it's worth, I agree with Nugget and Captain about Bush. He stands behind the podium with his smug little Joker grin and says he's a leader and will bring both parties together. I've seen just the opposite so far. It's very early in his term and I guess we'll just have to see what happens. Have a tremendous weekend, all.

webman email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
As a 10 year resident of Arkansas, I have a closer perspective on Bubba that most of you. I have spent many hours with Jim and Susan McDougal and a few other folks that know Bill very well. They are incredibly faithful to him. Hell, Susan went to jail for standing up for her principles, but indirectly for Bill. Many Arkansans profess a dislike of Bill, but they re-elected him time after time. When you corner a true native, they will usually confess that they have met the man, as most of us have, and really liked him. I think that his presidency was compromised by his extra-curricular activities. Bill should have always kept his zipper up, but I don't see how that would have really affected much if the press/public/republicans hadn't made such an issue out of it, but who could blame them for grabbing such an opportunity.

The feeding frenzy around Clinton affected me personally when the FBI investigated me for involvment in Whitewater. How bad is that?! So it is my claim to small-time fame, but it was a waste of tax dollars, and was pretty damn scary at the time.

I think that part of the reason W got elected was a sort of knee-jerk reaction of the voting populace. He marketed himself as the opposite of Clinton. I guess it worked. We'll see. . . .

Torggy email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-22-2001
I liked Jimmy Carter alot, still do, voted for him twice, but how can you say he had a good foreign policy? Ask a former hostage.

Just for comparison. In Clintons first 6 months we got a tax increase (the largest single in history) retroactive to the first of the year. With Bush we get a tax cut (albeit to small)retroactive to the first of the year. Mine will be enough to pay for my daughters winter tuition. What better way to invest in the future.

I digress (isn't that my prerogative?): Captain, no major is useless, even if it's something like ermine psychology (Nugget, shame on you). And furthermore, I urge you to finish those few classes and get your degree, even if you take one class at a time. If you're thinking you don't have time, or how could you compete w/eighteen year olds, it's more like they are competing w/you. At least give it some thought, you're never too old!

Interesting topics, guys. It is so neat to be taking a history class and reading your fine posts at the same time. Keep it up.

Kitty email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-23-2001
Webman, it is too cool that you were investigated! How exciting! Did guys in black suits and skinny ties come knocking at your door? I know, I've watched too much t.v.

Webman can get in trouble like a son-of-a-bitch. How's that one, Skipper?

webman email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-23-2001
They asked around with my employer and a few friends. They were checking my, um, integrity. My boss would not answer questions on the phone, so they made a 3 hour drive to question her. She thought it was pretty funny to make them do that.

I escorted Susan McDougal to a funeral one time and the press was there with telephoto lenses. I was sure I would end up on some gossip rag cover. I was nervous about it then, but now, 7 years or so later, I am disappointed that I didn't. Ah, fame is so fleeting.

Drifter email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-23-2001
Which naked episode, Skipper? It sounds like there were so many...

Torggy email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-23-2001
Webby, Let me say that I am impressed with your connections and that it must have been very interesting to have been close to happenings such as that. I do not envy you the FBI investigation though. That would have left marks in my skivvies. I have things I want to stay hidden. That said you make it sound like this was a couple of kids in the back of a car figuring out the facts of life. In reality we have a man who used the power of every office he ever held to sexually harass and intimidate women. While at the same time purporting to be a huge supporter of women’s rights. Dare we say the word hypocrisy? Any administrator in any venue would have been out on his ear for similar actions. Least we not forget he was found guilty of sexual harassment.

Nugget, How can you say that sitting in a Oxford dorm room smoking pot gives one a leg up on foreign affair’s? Not that the pot is such a bad thing. Ike was a very good President at a very hard time. He got the Korean conflict controlled and kept us on an even plane with the Soviets.

Will because of yesterdays scheduling screw-up I must head to work. Have a great weekend one and all

Re: Foreign Affairs email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-23-2001
Torgy, how do you know all these things about Clinton? Were you there? Ike was out of his mind just like Reagan by the end of his presidency. Who is Will?

TWC email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001
One of the reasons we don't read as much about Bush's foibles as we did about Clinton's is that there is no Texas equivalent of the Arkansas Project. That was an alliance of Clinton's political adversaries in Arkansas and rich members of the radical right(specifically Richard Mellon Scalife) who spent a small fortune trying to destroy him. That's one of the reasons our country endured non-scandal scandals such as Whitewater, Travelgate, etc.

Certainly, Clinton can be used of hypocrisy. Here's a news flash: so can everyone else. If we examine our own lives, we can all find instances where our private behavior doesn't follow our public pronouncements. That said, it doesn't logically follow that Clinton's position on women's right was wrong. He and other similar thinkers are talking about political and economic opportunities for women.

As for the Bush tax cut, I suggest we all follow what's going on now in Texas, where the legislature is struggling with financial problems created by W's tax policies during his terms as governor. Also, some of us here are spending our rebates on things that are quite noble. But there could be, probably will be, a price down the road when certain worthwhile services provided by the government (yes, there are a few) won't be available because the funds aren't there. Nothing, not even a tax rebate, comes without a price tag.

Finally, I would offer this: I am disillusioned beyond belief by the political system - by both parties. I'm not sure what the alternatives are, but what we have now is not worth keeping.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001
WELL SAID TWC.

Torggy email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001
To blame Mr. Clintons problems on some “vast right wing conspiracy” is really looking at it all through the rose colored glass of the news media. Here is some one that left disheveled women in his wake, used the FBI to place criminal charges against travel office career employees (who’s case was recently thrown out of court) to place his own people and used 1000 FBI files as a door stop. I think the biggest wrong was the naïveté used to combine national security and campaign finance resulting in China’s missile technology being advanced 20 years. Suddenly making us the US within range of their warheads. If you say that the great economy happened on his watch so to did these things.

The tax cut problem is really quite simple. Even in a time of stupendous economic gains and record rising revenues, our federal government can not live with in its means. The so-called balanced budget leaves the Social Security side of the ledger filled with IOU’s. If the Fed cannot live within its means during good times what happens when times turn bad? Lets look at one program “Head Start”. Studies show little short-term gain from this program. It gets 6.2 Billion a year and helps 10 Million kids. Do the math. Why not just give each kid a million each year it would be cheaper by far. The only recourse we have, as a taxpayer is to cut off their supply of money and make them do what you and I have to do, live within our means. Is this tax cut the answer? Hell no, but it is a step in the right direction. Problem is there are 2000 steps the other way every day.

Yes we all have some hypocrisy in our lives. The little thing we say to our kids “do as I say not as I do” is a far cry from climbing up on a stage and pronouncing what you believe. It is a good thing to try to right the wrongs against any group. But just because you support a certain cause it does not allow you to perpetrate wrongs against it. Those wrongs are still wrongs.

TWC, I share your disillusionment by both sides of the political aisle. Although I hold hope for the future and believe that at its heart our system is still the best in the world and I would live nowhere else.

TWC email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001
Hold on there, Kemosabe. I specfically did not use the term right wing conspiracy. The existence of the Arkansas Project has been confirmed by at least one book (The Hunting of the President). David Brock, a former writer for the American Spectator has also discussed this group and its campaign against Clinton. Nor did I suggest that some of Clinton's problems were not of his own making. In fact, it amazed me that more wasn't made of his hunger for Chinese money. Could that be because there are dirty hands on both sides of the political fence here?

And we could play economic tic-tac-toe all day - your Head Start vs. Defense Dept. waste, and so on. There are programs of every stripe that could be and should be reevaluated. Which goes to my point about our two-party system -- way too much posturing, far too few solutions. And that goes from kids to energy, where our policy (or lack thereof) for the past quarter century has been shameful. Both the Demos and GOPers share blame for that.

Geez, Torggy, don't stick words in my mouth. I have enough trouble spitting 'em out on my own

Postman email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001
I liked when we talked about beer.

Torggy email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001
TWC No attempt was made to put words in your mouth my friend. I do not believe that possiable. You are smart enough to have plenty of your own and you spit them out just fine. My head start example was only that an example. You are correct in saying there are programs across the spectrum that need review. Since both sides seem incapable of such action it is up to "we the people" to cut off their supply and force them to make choices. What I would like to know is where is the complaint window for government programs that do not work? They just go on and on. No matter who we elect to office. When you get a bad deal at Wall-Mart you have recourse. The war on poverty was a abject failure. Yet the left says we did not throw enough money at it or wait long enough. Ya right! How do you stop a bad government program?! You can elect new people but it is like there is some great evil inside the Washington Beltway. You send in the best intentioned people in and they go bad, nothing changes. The only way left is to cut back on their money. Problem is they send guys with guns to collect from you, and if things keep on we will have nothing to shot back with.

But damn it is a nice day and I have to work again so gotta go. Have a great sunday

TWC email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-24-2001

I need to clarify one thing for Kitty: I got my BS in civil engineering from the U of M in '95. I was 3 classes short of a Poly Sci *MINOR* to add to my degree...

Way to go Webman! Did the FBI subject you to a body cavity search???

Reading the posts from Torggy and TWC was interesting. I have to say Torggy, I didn't think the countless investigations of Clinton were altogether warranted. People made accusations of "witness tampering," "abuse of power" and "obstruction of justice." He didn't do anything (in my opinion) that came close to those definitions. Abuse of power is using the Justice Dept, CIA and FBI to attempt to rig the outcome of elections like Nixon did.

I also personally think that the selling of arms to Iran to illegally fund the Contra's (Reagen-Bush) is much worse than lying about cheating on your wife...

I guess what I'm saying here is that what a person does in the privacy of their own home is their business. Both parties need to remember that more often and just debate policy rather than drag each other through the mud...

W cast himself as the anti-Clinton, but he used Cocaine and has a DWI on his record...some hero...but, as I've said before, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt hoping he'll grow into the job. I don't agree with the tax cut, but I'll spend the $300, so I guess that makes me a hypocrite too.

Well, off the soapbox and back to work! Take care Arbleys!

Nugget email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
The good conversation continues. Onlooker, even if you hate the topic you have to appreciate the thought behind it. Torggy, I did not say Jimmy Carter had a good foreign policy. I said that Carter, Reagan and Clinton had varying degrees of success. And I agree that Ike was a very good, if not great president, but one also has to realize that during the hostage crisis of the Carter Administration, Jimmy was tending the coop when Ike's Iran policy came home to roost. The hostage crisis had its genesis during Ike's watch and a very loose CIA playing games in the 50's. But no, I would not say Jimmy Carter had a successful foreign policy. On the other hand, I do think he has been the absolute model of what an ex-President can be for the balance of his time after office. He and Gerald Ford (a recent recipient of the JFK Profiles in Courage award) have done this country proud. I might also add that the job of heading the Executive Office and Commander-in-Chief extends far beyond the offering of a tax cut. It seems to me that the primary job of the President is to offer to the American people his vision of the unfinished agenda of the country, and to use his office (Teddy Roosevelt's "Bully pulpit") to persuade the American people and Congress to adopt his policies. Reagan was a master and Carter never got it. "W" hasn't a clue. As for Clinton spending his entire time at Oxford smoking pot, well, I'm envious. His education and mastery of complicated economic policy came directy from his years at Oxford, so he must have been straight some of the time. As for his skirt chasing, well, the White House has long-served as a place of play for Presidents. It is a terrible character flaw of his, but like all of us with flaws, it ought not obscure his strengths and accomplishments. And with that and the end of the fiscal year approaching, I must disappear into inventory land...but a trip to Two Harbors this Friday is a pretty good reward. p.s. Kitty, I mention the uselessness of a Political Science degree only because I have one Thanks for the scolding though. Twice in one week; I'll have to get better Happy Monday all...

onlooker email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
Nugget, I guess I hate politics because I find it kinda boring so I don't follow it, which means I know very little about it and that is more than likely the reason why I say I hate it.

By the way, the second biggest employer in Cloquet filed ch. 11 this morning and it aint Wall-Mart.

Drifter email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
Interesting reading in here. I guess I have to pretty much agree with what TWC said a couple days back, and Captain's last entry more or less mirrored my thoughts. It is very easy to rip a public person for he or she does or did in their personal life -- especially if you didn't vote for them. I believe (all in all) Clinton did a pretty good job of running the country. I will never be able to persuade a Republican of this, though... I have tried, and the father-in-law just doesn't listen..

Torggy email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
DOM, now I like that idea. Beer on tap would be a nice addition too.

Onlooker, That is a great one, it has merit. Allot of NFL player are hunters they might like that one.

Captain, Respectively I must say that power can be abused in many ways. If the local hospital CEO were found on a gurney with a candy striper, he is gone. Local fire chief in the bunkhouse with a young volunteer, we have the same result. I too believe in the privacy of ones home. But the abuse of power to gain sexual favors in the work place has been a hidden atrocity is this country for too many years. I do not speak of Monica she was willing, though she does fall into the same place as the above mentioned. I speak of the others that were not so willing. I did not know if Mr. Clinton was guilty of sexual harassment of not, that was what the trial was for. He was found guilty.

While I agree with you about Nixon. Did you know that a Nixon advisor went to jail for haveing one FBI file? How does that sit with the more than 900 found in the White House during the Clinton administration?

Iran-Contra was about a group of laws passed by a democrat-controlled congress aimed specifically at the president making it illegal to save American lives in the mid-east and fight communism in Central America. I think congress should have been brought up on charges.

New law: All people going to slow in the fast lane have their car taken away.

Captain America email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
I'm not deluded enough to think that Clinton was a saint or anything Torggy. He cheats on his wife and in my book that is a pretty shitty thing to do. (I have a theory that Hilary is a lesbian and that they have an "open marriage of convience," but that's a topic for another day.)

All I'm saying is that if we gave a "special prosecuter" 6 years to work and a $40 million budget or whatever, EVERY president could be made to look like a scum-sucking moron. FDR cheated on his wife. So did JFK. Andrew Jackson sired a child with his mistress while in office. Thomas Jefferson, who wrote that "All men are created equal," went home to his plantation and doinked his slave woman every night ... I just don't think, that in a historical context, Clinton was such an "evil" guy that Henry Hyde and some others made him out to be.

Great man? No. Good president? Yes.

I imagine we'll just have to agree to disagree eventually, or else we'll bore everybody else to tears...

Torggy email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
Nuget, sorry if you thought I was scolding. that was not intended. I share your opinion of Carter. I liked him as a person when he was president and he has aquitted himself well since. As far as Clintons great economic policy, what was it? What programs did he put in place? He got lucky and the economy grew despite his efforts to stop it. I envy you your trip to TH have a good one.

Drifter, I would consider myself a JFK democrate. My politicol stance has not changed. The democrate party moved away and the repbulican party moved closer.

Nugget email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
Captain, you are right about disagreements...Mark Twain said "It is not good that we should all think alike. It is the difference of opinion that makes a good horse race". That said, Torggy, if your argument is carried to its logical conclusion, should Republican Presidents obey only laws passed by Republican-controlled Congress' and Democrats obey only those passed when the Dems control Congress? On the one hand, you accuse Clinton of breaking the law and getting away with it while others are prosecuted, but you take Reagan's disregard for both the law as it was then written and in my view the spirit if not the letter of Constitution and imply that it was ok because the laws he clearly violated were passed by the Dems.

Nugget email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001
Sorry Torggy, my scoldings came from Kitty and Agats, though I suspect in good humor... From you we are getting your clear thoughts backed by what you believe. And I'll back you on the fast lane deal. I think we ought to be able to ram our car into the vehicle of anyone doing something really stupid in their car...

Drifter email icqRe: Foreign Affairs06-25-2001

Here's one: Standardized spelling of all first names.

Now, some of you may not see this as a problem. Well, you haven't been chewed out by a parent because you couldn't figure out on your own that their version of the name "Sally" is actually spelled "SssallLey" So enough already. A review board would be set up to approve any exceptions. But applicants would be required to sign an agreement waiving their right to complain about misspellings. Violating this agreement would mean a six-month sentence to the classroom where you would be required to write on the blackboard "I will spell Sally like everyone else" for eight hours a day.

And one more law: Every rap artist would be required to play one chord of some instrument on every CD they release. Just to see if they can actually do it themselves, as opposed to stealing it from someone else.
