| WHAT DO WE ALL LIKE TO DO IN THE SUMMER. CAMPING? FISHING? BARBEQUES? ROAD TRIPS? SPORTS? THE BEACH? GO TO HUGO'S? DO TELL............. | ||
| Skipper | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-08-2001 |
| Another thread bites the dust!....My friends I am leaving you for awhile, the family is taking a trip to Texas for a week, if you smell something burning it is probably white Minnesota skin wafting from south of the Mason-Dixon line, I personally am in search of the dance moves that we all enjoyed from "Urban Cowboy", I hope to bring back some Lone Star beer for the gang at Indian Lake(E. Jim will pass out when he opens that cooler) so I hope you people continue to enjoy your selves here and I will join you in a week! Maybe Lone Star beer on tap at BGTNG? | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-08-2001 |
| HAVE A SAFE AND FUN TRIP SKIPPER. | ||
| Torggy | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-08-2001 |
| Better leave some Lone Star for the Texans Skipper. They get awful touchy when they run out. Careful and have fun. Here in northwest Washington state in the summer, my buddies and I, as it stays light late, like to grab a bunch of beer and head for the hills. There are hundreds of miles of logging roads and finding one you have never been on is great. We try to find ones with great views of Mount. Baker, the ocean or both. Some of the hills are 5000 feet or more high. An old logging landing supplies all the firewood needed. Finding your way down in the dark can be the best part of the trip. | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-09-2001 |
| So Skipper will be "dancing like a son of a bitch" at Gilley's in Texas?? He better not still have a southern drawl when he visits Brimson in a few weeks or the natives might beat him up. I believe this is also the week that The White Chevy is visiting TH. Perhaps he'll be able to get on a computer and give us an update from the northland. I caught parts of the Masters over the weekend. Some of Tiger's approach shots reminded me of Ivan at TH last Heritage Days. Twins home opener tonight, and I will be in attendance.... | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-09-2001 |
| TORGGY, THAT SOUNDS FUN. I TOO LIKE THE NIGHT TIME. I LIKE TO SIT AROUND A PIT FIRE DRINKING BEER AND MAKIN SMOORS WITH ALL THE NEIGHBORS AND LOOKING AT THE STARS AND HEARING THE FISH JUMPING AND THE LOONS LOONING. HAVE FUN AT THE OPENER DRIFTER. ARE WE THE ONLY ONE'S LEFT IN HERE THIS WEEK? | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-09-2001 |
| I'm still in this week this week ZZ. My girlfriend and I both bought new bikes last weekend. We plan on spending those sunny summer days pedaling around Lake Nokomis and Lake Calhoun. I also plan on golfing quite a bit this year. I'm not as good as Tiger, but I'll be up at the Agate City Classic this August. Here's to sucking back some suds up in the Big Two. | ||
| TWOZ- | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-09-2001 |
| CAPTAIN, I AS WELL PLAN ON GOLFING QUITE A BIT THIS SUMMER. GOT NEW CLUBS LAST YEAR, WHAT A DIFFRENCE. GAINED 10 STROKES ON MY GAME. I'M NOT EVEN CLOSE TO TIGER WOODS. IF WE WERE WE WOULDN'T BE SITTING HERE. HA HA NO PLACE TO RIDE BIKES WERE I LIVE. I WISH THERE WERE BECAUSE I LIKE TO ROLLER-BLADE. USE TO ROLLER BLADE AROUND LAKE CALHOUN WHEN I LIVED IN THE CITIES. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-09-2001 |
| I looked on the internet and found that Tiger Woods made $1,008,000 for winning the Masters. Not a bad week's work, eh? I haven't been around the lakes for a while. Last summer I didn't have either a bike or rollerblades...but this year I'll enjoy the summer just that much more. I missed before if you told, but where do you live now Two-Z? | ||
| bloop | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-09-2001 |
| As Ivan's personal choffeur last Heritage Days, I can tell you for a fact that Ivan's golf game by no means compared to that of the little Lion King. He couldn't even make out the fairway;let alone attempt to putt. But by god,we did have a damn good time! | ||
| Ivan | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Damned right, B-Loop, we did have great time last year. I bet Tiger didn't play the final round of the Masters after closing down the Legion, polishing off 4 kegs at Larry Carlson's pole barn, stumbling home at 5am, and then have The Drifter rouse him out of bed for an 8am tee time. I bet that weekend took at least 5 years off my life... | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Wow. In the days of my youth we would play the Friday of qualifying in the Agate City Classic, head to Sup-town and drink until 2am and still make an 8am tee time on Saturday... But now I can barely finish the 18 holes. I don't know what needs more practice, my golf game or my drinking stamina! | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Yes, it will be nice to get out and golf this summer after the long winter we've had. At least the snow is pretty much gone where I live… I guess there is still a bunch out in the woods up north (near North Brimson??). The Twins looked good in the home opener last night. The crowd was in a festive mood where I was in lower left field, consuming many 16 ounce beers in plastic bottles for $5.00 a piece. Captain - If you are who I think you are, I've heard you can actually golf well, unlike most of the rest of us in here (myself included). Drifter | ||
| Denny's Chef | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Summer what is that?? Waiting for a heat wave to hit.. I will be taking all my fine coaching skills hoened from Chuck Halsted and applying them to my son and daughter's soccer teams.. coach 2 nights play 2 nights that will fill up the schedule. I also will be writing a book.. TwoHarbors.. the untold story.. look for it at Barnes and Noble and also Walden book this fall. Chapter one "On the banks of the mighty skunk" Chapter 2 " What is an Agate?" Chapter 3 " How to polish your rock and other gems" Chapter 4 " Real Men swim in Lake Superior" Chapter 4 " Bowling for $$$ at the harbor bowl" Chapter 5 Fine dining .. in Agate City oops scratch that.. well it isn't done yet.. Again all proceeds from my book will go to the Big Noise Foundation or the Brimson retirement home for the aged and feeble minded. | ||
| DOM | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Chef - I can write chapter 3 for you. I've been polishing my rocks since the 4th grade. | ||
| Agats | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Chef: How about a chapter on the Life and Death of the Frog Pond. It sleeps beneath the Pre-EPA land fill below the football field. I spent many fondly remembered summer hours there as a young Agate chasing frogs, turtles and dragon flies. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Well Drifter, "good" in golf is a very relative and subjective thing. I'll put it this way--The Course ALWAYS kicks my ass. I would never call myself "good," because golf is a game that can never be permanently mastered...only temporarily tamed. But I do enjoy it. It's a different challenge every day you play! | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| CAPTAIN, DO YOU PLAY IN GOLF TOURNAMENTS? | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| I was on the THHS golf team in high school and I've played in the Agate City Classic every year since 1990. (Excepting for the one summer I worked in Alaska, but that's another tale...) When I used to live in Two Harbors I'd play in the Men's Club tourney as well. But that's it. I only play competitive golf for those 3 days a year. The rest of the time is for fun and a friendly wager. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| I THOUGHT I MAY HAVE KNOWN YOU BUT YOUR ANSWER CORRECTED ME ON THE THOUGHT. I ONLY PLAY IN ONE FUN TOURNAMENT A YEAR THREW WORK. IT'S ONE BIG DRUNK ON THE COMPANY. I HAVE FREINDS IN ALASKA. DID YOU HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SEEING ANYBODY THERE FROM TWO HARBORS? | ||
| DOM | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Did you hear how the guy from Wisconsin broke his leg on the golf course??? He fell off the ball washer! Get it....ball washer? | ||
| Falcon Edie | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Torggy--a message from TWC. He made it to TH, said hello to the lake for you and did not try to steal any smelter's beer. | ||
| Torggy | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-10-2001 |
| Thanks for the message Edie, it was very nice of TWC to think of me. Now the lake knows I am still around. All you still in TH look for the tourist with Iowa plates. It will be TWC. | ||
| Fred | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| Captain - I just got back from Arizona..4 days of golf, it was awesome. It is definitely the life. When do you predict that the courses might be open in the Cities? Golf fever is taking over. I hear Spooner is opening tomorrow. | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| Years ago I would on occasion golf with a fellow class of '82er at one of the courses down in the cities. I believe the Captain knows this character from hunting trips up north on #2. Anyway, one time the two of us were golfing and my friend was teeing off. It was a pretty narrow fairway, with another fairway coming back the opposite direction off to our right. I was standing behind the tee box, watching my friend tee off and over on the other fairway I noticed a foursome of 75-80 year olders slowly walking toward us. I thought to myself, "Gee, I hope he doesn't hit a slice.." Sure enough, my classmate winds up and smacks a high velocity slice, about 5 feet off the ground. It's headed right at these poor old folks, we are both hollering "Four!! Four!!" at the tops of our lungs.. I never seen 75 year old grandmas and grandpas scatter so fast. Thankfully they did manage to dodge the wicked slice, but to this day when we get together and have a few cold ones, this story always seems to come up. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| PRETTY FUNNY DRIFTER. I DID THE SAME THING WITH A BOWLING BALL. POURING OUT HERE RIGHT NOW. NOT THAT WE NEED IT. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| When I was up in Alaska Two-Z I was working mainly in Juneau. I did take one week off though in July and went to Fairbanks. I spent the week with my THHS buddy Jesse Lundgren and his older brother Sean. Nice guys...they took me salmon fishing and I caught a nice 25-30# king salmon. I've still got a picture of that up on my wall... Some of the courses are opening up down here on Thursday Fred. Where did you go in Arizona? Phoenix or Tucson? Did Curt "Crusty" Wilson graduate in 1982? Is he the anonymous slicer? | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| No, Crusty graduated in '81. The anonymous slicer is much taller than Crusty and was a helluva basketball player, as was his younger brother. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| Terry Bolen? Was he 1982? Let's see, Tracy was '84, Troy was '89, so yes, I'm guessing Terry Bolen! | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-11-2001 |
| You are correct. I guess he's no longer anonymous. One of the funniest guys I've ever known... | ||
| Fred | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| I was in the Phoenix area...played at courses in Sun City Grand. I've found my life's destiny, golf, playing cards, tanning by the pool and a nightly bbq. Man, I wish I could retire! Usually one of my first rounds of the year is at Hinckley, but I'm not sure what the conditions are there. I might have to take a quick trip to the cities in the next month and make my brother buy me a round of golf. Hope the weather is nicer down there than it is up here...ick. But I hear sun for tomorrow. Let's hope! Happy Easter everyone. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Yeah, the retired life in Arizona can be good. There aren't too many days I miss living there, but after having such a clown ass winter like we've had, I'm beginning to think maybe it wasn't so bad down there... ;-) I don't talk to The Slicer much Drifter--he doesn't make the deer hunting trek up to Camp Virgin very often. I mostly hear tales of him, from those who do see him. | ||
| Torggy | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Denny,s Chef I think you should write that book. A couple of chapters I could think of adding would be " What the hell is a Seegog" and "Where is Waldo". Arizona and all of those hot places are nice for short visits, but they are so brown and barren. I would take a green rolling hill or a boat on a small inland lake or a tent next to a rock filled bubbleing stream like the Knife anyday. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| I know what you mean Torggy. I would come home to Minnesota on a week of vacation and the "green-ness" of everything would startle the hell outtuv me. You don't realize how beautiful it can be here until you go away for a while... | ||
| Nugget | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Torggy...I agree with the tent by a river thing and the green hills. My brother moved out to Las Vegas a few years ago for the nearly express purpose of being able to play golf year round. While I agree a bit of golf now and then is a good thing, so are four seasons. I've been to see friends in Arizona as well and even with this bitch of a winter that we are still trying to shake, they can have the southwest. And I'll take Superior over a trip to any ocean any day... | ||
| Fred | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| I do love Lake Superior and all the beauty of the North Shore. It's easy to take it for granted and forget how lucky we are to have ultimate nature at our doorstep, but I what I don't like are the "in between" times (like now) when the weather is crappy and you can't do spring/summer things (because it's wet) or snow things (because it's gone). It's at those times when I want to run off to somewhere warm. I would have to say a warm September in Two Harbors is about as good as it gets for me. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |

| webman | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Wow, I am glad to see all the cool stuff going back and forth here. Captain, were you golfing with Dad? Hell of a long-ball hitter if I recall. I too like to visit TH in the summer when it is really lookin' green. Last summer in AR it was consistently hotter than Vegas for several weeks. I am talking about 110 - 115 degrees. It SUCKED! I was ready to move back north. I think about that some anyway. Planning on getting up there sometime this summer, see the relatives, play bad (really bad) golf, skip rocks in the lake, all the good stuff. I will be expecting to see some construction going on at BN-TNG. | ||
| bloop | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| The bus leaves on Fri.,April 27 to begin the BNTNG tour. Captain's log -4272001. Beam me up, Driftwood, and bring your damn guitar!!!!!My tamborine is ready to rock and roll. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Well Webby, I don't know who's Dad you mean...I golf with my Dad, I've golfed with Fred's Dad, but I don't know about anybody else's Dad! | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| B-Loop: We'll be ready, but the question remains -- will you be able to handle two full nights and a complete weekend of Indian Lake fun?? I wonder if Skipper will still be sunburned from his trip to TX? The Brimson ladies might like that... B-Loop, start drinking herb tea, it's good for the vocal chords. None of the rest of us can carry a tune. Is Cruiser bringing his new guitar or the old Thailand made six-string?? P.S. Bring your soap-on-a-rope for the sauna. Some of these guys get a little goofy after a few strong ales. | ||
| Electric Jim | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Just who is it that says I get a little goofy? Identify yourself. | ||
| Falcon Edie | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-12-2001 |
| Heard from TWC last night and it has been colder than a son of a bitch (not to be confused with "he can dance like a son of a bitch")and he has been out visiting the relatives on both sides of the family. He will be returning tomorrow to much warmer weather and better televsion programming. His mother does not do cable, thus no ESPN. I'm sure he's going through withdrawl--he may have to stop in at the Larson homestead in Waldo to catch some hockey. | ||
| Captain America | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| In a few short hours, I roll forth to the Big Two for Easter weekend. So for those of you with sharp eyes, you may sight me at Blackwood's tonight...and tomorrow night... When does the bus trip to BN:TNG leave town? | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| YOU GUYS ARE FUNNY. YOUR KILLIN ME CAPTAIN. WISH I WAS GOING TO INDIAN LAKE WITH YOU ALL. I'VE BEEN KNOWN TO RATTLE THE SPOONS PRETTY GOOD. I'M ONLY GOOD FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES THOUGH. DO YOU GUYS KNOW ANY 2 MINUTE JAMMERS? | ||
| Drifter | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| Captain -- have fun up north... wish I was going. I'm not working today so I will take advantage of a rare sunny day this spring by playing outside with the kids. Lower the hoop in the driveway all the way down and impress the neighbors with my 3 inch vertical and slam dunks.. Everyone have a safe and happy Easter weekend! Drifter | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| Hello, fun seekers. I have returned from my voyage to the Great White North. I failed to work on my tan, but I also avoided frostbite, windburn and drowning, 3 hazards one could easily have encoutered in TH this week. I'd like to tell you that a lot of exciting stuff happened, but it didn't, largely because I spent most of my time taking my mom on various errands or visiting my dad in the nursing home. I will share a few observations. 1. Just for the hell of it, I drove up to the future site of BNTNG, and I just bust out laughing. Maybe, our future developers should just leave it the wa it is - the idea of a half-fallen down, open air bar is appealing. 2. I see that the Dixie Star is now called Dixie's Saloon and Deli. DELI? I hate to be a skeptic, but I'll wager that the only thing deli about that place is that the price of beef jerky has been jacked up. 3. I saw just about every teacher I ever had in high school while eating breakfast in Judy's for 3 straight days. What a time warp. I had a nice conversation with Mr. Sorensen and Mr. Battaglia one day, and I also saw Krause and Fitzpatrick in there. I was fine with it, but my mom shot spitballs at them all morning. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| I apologize for hogging more space in this thread, but I should pass along two more things. 1. There's another school plan being floated. I won't give you the details here, but the Duluth News-Tribune Web site should have a story that appeared in (I think) the Wednesday edition. 2. The rivers are pretty high here, although not at flood stage. I went up to Gooseberry Falls briefly at midweek, and the volume of water was incredible. The falls were almost vicious, looking nothing like the place where tourists hang out in July. | ||
| White Rhino | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| I too visited the North for the past three days. The liquor store is booming. The ore docks are very busy. Mr. BLoop is out with his private sewer machine thawing things out. The police are plain ugly. Never a smile. Judy's Cafe is THE place. Loud as hell. The Legion is a little smoke-filled. What a time. | ||
| Big Jim Nelson | Re: SUMMER TIME | 04-13-2001 |
| I like to sit out on the deck at the cabin at Stone Lake and time myself. How long can one human being sit there in the swarm of black flies, gnats, horseflies, wasps, woodticks and other pests? Last summer my record was 3 minutes, 2 seconds. | ||
