| henry's hamburgers | Spring is around the corner | 02-22-2001 |
| Things seem to be getting quite serious in the previous thread... Nugget is correct in my opinion. Many folks now-a-days are too damn concerned about themselves and are narrowminded in seeking positive things that benefit a larger group. What ever happened to the days when you sincerely knew your neighbors and cared for the well-being of anyone in your community? We are a part of the "me" generation and it pisses me off that many people only give a shit about themselves and whatever happens to the next guy is their problem...By the way, Chuck Harvey got married 2 weeks ago.Everybody loves somebody sometime.. Signed- Butterloop | ||
| Skipper | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-22-2001 |
| Holy Shit Nugget, that was one piece of fine writing! I am speechless on where to go from there....Oh well, where the hell was Henry's Hamburgers? was that Henry Carlson? I remember Sandy's on London Road, I miss Kitty...... | ||
| Torggy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-22-2001 |
| I used to work at Sandy's. The place had a Scottish theme. Instead of a Big Mac, Sandy's had a Big Scott. They also had a double burger called the Hi-Lo. With a little guy in a plaid kilt and hat on the napkins and cups. Made 65 cents an hour, life was good. | ||
| Skipper | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Now Ivan is the little guy in the plaid kilt and hat..... | ||
| Donald | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| The best restaurant the northland ever had was The Rib. It was a favorite of truckers. I think it was even better than Taco Johns. Donald | ||
| Ivan | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Any lovin is good lovin....uhh, well it sounds good in that old BTO song anyway. Who is the new Mrs. Harvey? Do they still call Chuck Pretzel Boy? I'll never forget the time that Charlie had his cleats on the wrong feet at football practice..classic. Since we're on the food subject, the Pickwick has the best pepper cheese burger in the state...add in their famous onion rings, wash it all down with a tall Guiness stout and the old tail pipe will be burning for a week. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| How about a late night Coney Island stop on the way back from Soup Town??? Now that was an experience. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| GOTTA LOVE CONEY ISLAND. WHO'S ALL GONNA GET HIT BY THE STORM OF 2001 THIS WEEKEND? WHAT EVER DID HAPPEN TO TH? I WAS BROUGHT UP AS WELL IN THE HELP AND GIVING ERA. AND I'M PROUD TO SAY I STILL DO IT EVERY CHANCE I GET. BY THE SOUNDS OF IT I'M GLAD I DON'T LIVE THERE NOW. | ||
| Nugget | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Two-Z...In a way I agree but part of me wishes I were raising my kids there as well as trying to have some positive effect on the issues that are of concern there these days...seems a critical time. As for the weather, sounds as though things here in the Cities could get interesting and TH could get 12+. Perhaps they can all get together and help each other shovel.Maybe a round or two of Cumbaya is in order. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| I SEE YOUR POINT FOR THE RAISING OF YOUR KIDS NUGGET, BUT IT'S GONNA TAKE MORE THAN ONE PERSON TO HELP OLD TH. YOU GOT EVERYTHING READY INCASE YOU GET A POWER OUTAGE AGAIN?????? | ||
| Ivan | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Great point Drifter. Coney Island rules late night fare. I recall a famished Skipper once mistaking his pointer finger for one of those dogs they put in the Coney's. Onions and chili in a finger gash is not a pretty sight. | ||
| Nugget | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Two-Z, the world has been well-marked by events driven by one person...As for power outages, we get them all the time at work which plays hell with the computer network...but the kids get a kick out of the 'crisis'. When my son was about 5 we had a power outage and that night we read by the light of the fireplace. He thought that was pretty cool. Its like the big blizzards we experienced as kids. There's just something about flirting with what feels like, especially to a kid, a disaster... | ||
| Heatwave Berler | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Look for the biggest storm of the Millenium to take place this weekend in northern Minnesota. As for you Cities guys, just be thankful the storm will fall over a weekend this time and not screw up your commutes to work. Regards, Heatwave | ||
| Heatwave | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Sorry, millennium, not millenium. I always take pride in my fine grammar. Heatwave | ||
| Drifter | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| I love this latest quote from Jesse: Gov. Jesse Ventura, on national criticism he's receiving for his broadcasting of XFL games: ``They're saying I'll lose my marketability. But just because the going gets tough, I'm not going to quit. I don't quit on anything.'' What would he describe his bailing from the Reform Party as?? | ||
| Nugget | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Jesse reminds me of the old saying that its better to leave people wondering why you didn't speak than to leave them wondering why you did. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| SOUNDS LIKE FUN NUGGET. FOR YOUR KIDS SAKE I HOPE YOU GET A POWER OUTAGE. I BET IT WILL BE ONE OF THE TIMES THEY REMEMBER AS A KID. AND I AGREE, ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.......... | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Whoa, had to go looking for the antacid pills after the Coney Island references. Did anyone have the courage to try Joe Huies and its (rumored) speciality, cat soup? | ||
| Torggy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Hey Drifty, you sure got alot of mileage out of my mention of Coney Island in the chat room. I am hooked on the damn things, every time I go back home I can't drive down Superior street without stopping. To bad they changed the booths out. My name was carved in all of them I think. I used to like the little jukebox at every table. Since WEBC did not play Lay-Lady-Lay ya had to go there to hear it. The First street one is good for a quick lunch. Just fight your way through the street people and kick aside the empty malt liquor cans. Real shakes and pictures of old ore boats. Don't get no better than that. Come on you guys scared of a little snow storm? Boy things have changed. heh heh There is an article in todays Duluth Herald about kids painting bathrooms at the high school in TH. Fits in with the topic of conversation ongoing here. | ||
| Nugget | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Torggy...thanks for the heads up on the Tribune article...I just read it online. I'm pretty involved with the St. Paul schools and there certainly is precident for such a complex in the district here. There is an elementary school (John A. Johnson, interestingly enough) in St. Paul that has a brand new YMCA attached to it and the school itself houses several Ramsey County offices. These collaborations can be terribly cost-effective. I'm going to have Oberstar's office get in touch with the Director of Plant Planning and Maintainance for the St. Paul District and perhaps they can talk turkey. No sense in reinventing the wheel. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| After reading some of the discussion about THHS on the previous threat, I thought that only something innovative and different might have a chance. I hope that this is it. I wonder if alums like myself who live away from TH can lend support to this in some way | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Oops. Obviously, I meant "thread" not "threat" in the prior post. | ||
| Skipper | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Ate my pointer finger, now that is funny!Taco John's was a staple for a late ride home after dancing in Souptown! I got left there once in college, had to hitchhike to UMD, waited right in front of the Hammond for a ride! | ||
| Torggy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| Damn ain't the bunch of you got nothing better to do than play in here all day? Sounds like quite the storm coming in. Fill the fridge and throw alother log on the fire. I used to love it when the wind made the house shudder. Wow I did not know that you guys missed the heart of TH thing. Here check out this link http://www.twoharborsmn.com/placed/index.php?story_id=62193 Maybe with no where to go because of the storm the chat room will be busy this weekend. Later Gators | ||
| James Rine | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| I have said over and over that Two Harbors does not need any school. We have many buildings-use them! I am retired from the Lakes Fleet. Taxes is too high. If you City guys had to pay what I do out on the old farm, you would vote NO too. We don't need a new school. A little paint will do wonders. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-23-2001 |
| I have heard from many people that Skipper was a legend at the Cove in Superior. Some say his dancing skills were equal to that of John Travolta's. Others were jealous and made fun of him. I can picture him stranded outside the Hammond, dressed in his boot cut slacks, silky snap-buttoned dress shirt, and blue Pumas (with the yellow stripe). I'm sure it was just a matter of minutes before someone stopped to offer this young stallion a ride over the bridge and back to the Land of Sky Tinted Waters.... Drifter | ||

| The.White.Chevy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-24-2001 |
| Ah, there's nothing better than a good old-fashioned snowstorm in the Great White North, unless you have to drive through it. In my corner of the world, we've had snow, freezing rain, fog, more rain, more fog. And a driveway with better quality ice than the Arena! | ||
| Navin Johnson | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-24-2001 |
| What's wrong with optigrabs?? "All I need is this chair, and this paddle ball game, and this remote control, and..." | ||

| Holy Hannah, I can't even see the grill on the deck! what a storm, how much did TH end up with? | ||
| James Rine | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-25-2001 |
| We have 18 inches in Two Harbors. I suppose they will close the school for a few weeks. In the old days, we would walk to school and never miss even one day. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-25-2001 |
| When I was a boy, I braved raging snowstorms, -30 wind chills and zero visibility to fight my way to school. Of course, I lived less than a mile away. Oh yeah, I had a car too. Not to mention boots and a jacket. I'd like to tell you that I also fought my way through hordes of bloodthirsty Indians, but they were smarter than I was. They stayed inside. | ||
| Torggy | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-25-2001 |
| I can remember standing up to my hindend in a snow bank. With a huge snowdrift just down the road 4-foot tall and ditch to ditch. I was thinking, "no way we go to school today" when faintly I would hear the roar of a motor that got louder and louder. Suddenly with a huge puff of snow and the clanking of tire chains the big orange bus would appear. As the door was flung open and I dejectedly climbed aboard, I was confronted by a huge jovial driver with a big smile on his face saying "ha ha ha bet you thought I wasn't going to make it huh.” As I looked at my fellow student’s sad faces I realized that I was on my way to another day in Mrs. Sicklecrow's class. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-26-2001 |
| NICE TRY SKIPPER. YOU JUST DIDN'T LIKE THE FACT THAT I'M A BETTER AIM THEN YOU. WHERE'S OUR SNOWDAY TODAY??? | ||

| One day mom was cleaning Skippers room and in the closet she found a bondage S+M magazine. This was very upsetting for her. She hid the magazine until his father got home and showed it to him. He looked at it and handed it back to her with out a word. She finally asked him, "Well what should we do about this?" Dad looked at her and said, "Well I don't think you should spank Skipper." | ||
| E. Jim | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-27-2001 |
| Two feet of snow and now twenty below this morning??!! Is there any way to hitch a ride down south? I travel light, just my 6-string and an old brown shaving kit. E. Jim | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-27-2001 |

| I see the school board is at it again! They just don't get it. Taxes is too high up here. We don't want another school. They got too much money as it is. I like Jesse. He knows the score on this education scam. NO. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-27-2001 |
| HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!!!!! | ||
| NUGGET | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-27-2001 |
| Dearest James. I'm going to assume either that you are kidding or that you failed to secure the education that the State offered you; the same one that the taxpayers of your youth funded. In either case, like Jesse, you fail to present to me enough intellectual challenge to even bother with you. More's the pity; I relish a good fight. But I won't be a bully to those intellectual cul-de-sacs that don't know when they are in over their head. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-27-2001 |
| HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAHA HA HA HA HA...I AGREE... | ||
| Kitty | Re: Spring is around the corner | 02-27-2001 |
| James, I see your education failed you. If you'd been paying attention in English class, you'd know "Taxes is too high" is sadly incorrect. It should be "Taxes ARE too high". I won't even bother with the "got" as opposed to "have" error. Hi everyone! I'm on a mid-winter break, so I've had some time to read all your hilarious and serious postings. Two-Z, I think you asked me what I was studying in college; it's teaching with a math major and English minor (kind of a left brain, right brain thing)and I should be finished in less than 2 years. The comments you have made about the state of the Two Harbors School have been very interesting, if not disturbing. I don't think there is a quick solution, but I do believe it is a common problem in small school districts. Skipper, you missed me? How sweet! But don't tell anyone, they might start gossiping about us! Ha! I'm so careful in my own small town that I won't let any man in my home without my 1st mate around-I'll talk to them out in the entrance way, clearly visible from the street! I also have neighbors that watch every single thing that goes on over here. They really need a life, but it does make me feel rather safe. Hey, guys, keep those music references coming, it's nice to be reminded of an old song every now and then. Have a good one, eh? (That is a perfectly good Yooperism). | ||
