Where was your favorite place to meet your friends in TH? Was it at Cudda's, The Place, or at Snake Lake or Legion Hill? .. I recall my first night with my drivers license and also my 1st car and cruising from the Sidetrack to The Place with Ivan. After rounding up Maddog and acquiring an 8 pack of Miller Shorties,my '67 Chevy died near the Sidetrack and I ended up getting it towed back in to Gotham City. PROCEED-

Unless it happenend more than once, I remember that fateful trip,....One of life's great mysteries to me is what the hell does Elton John say in "Benny and the Jets", I lose him after "Hey Kids"....sorry B-Loop, back to your question, the best was at the old Sidetrack, that was a fun place and it used to rock on the weekends, after coming of age, the Vets was THE hangout....

happy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-20-2001
B-loop, what color was your chevy?

Denny's Chef email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-20-2001
Skipper my son say 5 hail Packers and you can go to the Ponderosa for Friday surf n turf with no guilt this lenten season. Best hang outs in TH. * Grade school, at the monkey bars or merry go round at the John A. * Middle school Cuddas, or Friday night at the Harbor Theater for a rerun of Old Yeller or Herbie the Love Bug. * High school summer RJ's drive in or at the DQ corner. High School winter I always enjoyed a quiet friday night at the library with the collection of National Geographics or over at the church putting together mission kits for starving kids from Tibet. Oh a pizza or playing pinball at the Side Track wasn't bad either.

Torggy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-20-2001
Have to answer TWC's question from the last thread. No I do not like wiskers with my sum won's cat, they get stuck in my teeth. I do like it with won hung lo soup and a side of sum yong chik though.

In my day everyone who was anyone met at big rock.

Drifter email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
As a child (and a city boy) I would often grab my mitt and walk to the vacant lot on the corner of 2nd avenue and 3rd street. If there wasn't a few kids there already, I would just hang out and eventually a few others would show up. Before you knew it, you had a decent sized game of baseball going on, the rubber-coated variety. During the winter months (all 9 of them in TH) the High School Hill was a great place to hang out with sled in hand and Viking stocking cap on top of the head. In High School, it was the Sidetrack, The Place, or the DQ corner. For those of you too old or too young to know about the original Place, it was in the old warming house by the football field. The Place was a great hangout for a teen. You could walk in the old green faded building and play foosball, air hockey, pinball, pool... If nobody was at the Place, we'd all hop in the nearest low-rider and head out to the Sidetrack. If nobody was there, you would resort to beating loops the rest of the evening, hoping to bump into someone. Ahh, the memories...

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
By the way, Torggy, did you ever sample Joe Huey's Rat soup, with tails for an extra $.25?

Hangouts: The Dairy Queen was big in the junior high days, when we gangstas in blue windbreakers and tennis shoes spent hours there. I may have bought a malt once, but I'm not sure.

The Sidetrack had excellent pizza. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the hours vary a lot on weekends?

And the VFW ...When the drinking age in Minn. dropped to 18, the powers that be tried to keep us out, until they deduced that ... WE WOULD DRINK LIKE FISH IN THERE! Never underestimate the power of profit.

The VFW used to hire the worst bands they could find for weekends. One we called "Gravel" because they sounded like a dump truck depositing a load. This bunch used to play a lot of K.C. and the Sunshine Band. Not even 7 or 8 pitchers could make that sound good.

Ivan email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
"She's got electric boobs" is the only line I understand from "Benny and the Jets". I recall B-Loop's 67 red Chevy breakdown. I think it was down by the mighty Knife River at Jackson's store, though. After much prodding, we convinced B-Loop to "floor" it from a standing start to see how much rubber we could lay down. A moment after slamming his size 15 canvas high top down on the gas there was a loud pop, a puff of smoke, and a dead car in the northbound lane of old 61. I also recall a time at the Sidetrack when we couldn't get the thing started so we popped the hood and found the whole motor engulfed in flames. We put it out by throwing snow on it, but I'd never seen a 300 pounder move so fast. According to B-Loop, the red Chev was very popular with the ladies and many lost their innocence in the spacious back seat.

Webman - I got an e-mail from a classmate of mine (CS) who used to frequent the old Chronicle Class Reunion guestbook. He says he has been attempting to put an entry in this Forum, but he keep getting a message about a wrong or incorrect ISP. Any thoughts… or is CS just computer illiterate? Anyway, he dropped you an e-mail so be on the lookout for it. Thanks.

i remember snake lake... can anyone tell me where Thomas Lake is located? I remember snowmobiling and ice fishing there, but don't recall where it is (age thing).

DOM email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
Chef, A box of wine of your choice for a date with your little sis. That is what you men of the cloth drink, isn't it?

BFJ email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
Thomas Lake: Go up #2 out of TH, hang a left at Big Noise, go up the road a few miles, you'll see Thomas Lake on the right. If you wind up at Hugo's, you have gone too far, just sit at the bar and have a cold one with Electric Jim, then go back the other direction. See you there happy. BFJ

Captain America email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
Sorry Drifter, I've been busy *working* while at work the last couple days...I won't let it happen again.

Best hang-outs for my generation were the DQ before age 16 and Hardee's once you could drive.

Reason being, when you couldn't drive, you would hang out at the DQ and look to see who was "beating loops" around town. That and all the babes of the day were working there--always helped out Bear Krysiak's profit with the 16 and under set.

Captain America email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
I would also feel shitty if I didn't answer the last thread--best beer of all time is Miller High Life. Hands down. Just ask anyone at the VFW on a Wednesday night...

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
Man, I'd have to turn in my THHS diploma if I didn't mention the Northland, which I believe was called "The University" by some.

It stood a few blocks away from the Minnehaha, and it became the Pinball Capital of the World. You could spend hours and a few dozen quarters in there. It also had a decent selection of comic books for the younger set and and pretty good tunes.

Eventually, as the old song goes, they paved paradise and put up a car lot. Does anyone else remember this place?

Skipper email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
I've written many times of the old Northland Cafe, where Benna's old shop was, used to stop after Fr.O'Dohrety's fire and brimstone sermons for a paper and a Zagnut bar....remember the old Corner Cafe, I think the Levitt family owned it, Drifter, wasn't there a little store not far from your house, maybe closer to south avenue? I also remember wearing those maroon double knit baseball uni's, didn't your class have 'em first White Chev? almost as bad as the Chi. White Sox uniforms in the mid 70's when they had to wear shorts, what year was that Drifter? Ivan you crack me up!

Falcon Edie email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
One of the nicest places to hangout was the Sidetrack aka The Oasis in younger days. They had the best pizza! Mom and Dad would load us all up in the car (all 6 kids) and get pizza and let us play the games. Used to love that place and I have yet to find a place that had pizza quite that delicious. The Sidetrack was fun-had a great New Year's Eve party there one year.

Drifter email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
Skipper - It was the bicentennial summer of 1976 in which the White Sox uniforms featured shorts. They had even worse uniforms than the Houston Astros that year. Beginning of Bennie and the Jets goes: "Hey kids, shake it loose together the spotlight's hitting something that's been known to change the weather..." Drifter

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
Skipper, you are a man with an excellent memory and good fashion sense. Yes, my class had the dubious distinction of wearing those maroon pajamas first. We really thought we looked cool. Then again, our white basketball uniforms of that era were even worse. Take a look at those in an old yearbook sometime. The man who designed those things truly stole his money

webman email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-21-2001
I used to love the Northland. I got to go in Smokey's Tavern (a couple of doors down) with my dad. Quite the centerfold collection on the walls there. And it was Booksa Johnson's store down by Drifter's house. The building is on the corner of 1st Ave. and 3rd St. right across from where Floyd (the artist) Udenberg lived and kitty corner from the Burke home. We used to hang out at Cudda's when it was on 7th Avenue. There was an old brown station wagon across the street in Adolph Porger's yard that was frequently used for "rope burning." It even came equipped with accessories for that activity.

Fred email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
I have spent the last few days reading through all of these great

posts, and I must say, you guys are cool. What great memories and

stories. If you don't mind, I'll just throw in a few things from past

topics...favorite teacher: Mr. Krause-Algebra...he made me love math.

Growing up hang outs-I too remember playing baseball in the vacant lot on

2nd Ave. It was a home run over Rita Mindal's garage. The other hang out

had to be just the neighborhood-a block up on 3rd. It was "night games" all

summer long. Thanks for letting me share.

PS..Captain America..I remember the personalized Maxfli cap from the Classic last summer..you're

my favorite super hero! Your friend, Fred

Skipper email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Drifter you amaze me with your knowledge, Chev are those the uniforms with the racing stripe down one side? Why would anyone burn rope?

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Yes, Skipper, you are correct. We all looked like we'd been run over by a truck. For what it's worth, the maroon home jerseys we wore then were sharp.

One other sports hangout. We used to play a lot of baseball at the REA building on 15th (I think). It was just a gravel lot, but we improvised fences and let it rip.

Drifter email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Fred - Good call on Mr. Krause. He was a great teacher. I remember in 9th grade, we were supposed to be doing our assignments and a couple of us were flicking one of those triangular paper footballs back and forth. Anyway, I was across the room from Mr. Krause by the windows (he was sitting at his desk). I put a little too much into one flick and the football ended up landing square in the middle of Mr. Krause's desk, on a paper he was correcting. Instead of getting upset, he just looked up, shrugged his shoulders and went back to correcting the paper.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
DRIFTER, I USE TO PLAY IN THE FIELD OF 2ND AND 3RD. USE TO LOVE SLIDING INTO THE BASES.

HANGOUTS - MAN THERE IS SO MANY. THE WHOLE LOOP. USE TO WALK IT, YOU WOULD ALWAYS FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. CUDDA'S, SIDE TRACK, DENNY'S, DRUG STORE, BAND SHELL, PIT PARTY'S IN THE VALLEY, ALL OF BRIMSON'S BAR'S, CADOT LAKE, AND THAT THING BY THE FOOTBALL FIELD IN THE WOODS. THE PLACE, LEGION, THE TRAIN DOWN BY THE DOCKS, THE BREAKWATER, THE CAVE DOWN BY THE DOG POUND, THE ROCKS OF LAKE SUPERIOR, GOOSEBERRY FALLS, THE SWIMMING POOL IN SCHOOL AND YES THE HIGH SCHOOL HILL ON A SNOW DAY.

SO MANY. AS I WRITE THEM THEY ALL HAVE A MEMORY SO VIVIDE LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY.

SOO MANY.

Captain America email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Thanks for the support Fred. I can only hope to live up to the faith that you place in me. In my mind, (unless I have your identity completely wrong), you're still the defending Region 7A champ!

I'm trying to get my girlfriend to come up to TH for the Agate City Classic this summer, but so far it's a no-go. But that leads me to this question: does anybody else out there remember the old Two Harbors golf clubhouse? What a run down shack.

However, the Baron and myself spent manya Saturday afternoon reading Golf Digest on the porch of that place...

Nugget email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Drifter...great story about the triangle football; made me laugh out loud and turned some heads...

Denny's Chef email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Mr. Krause?? Wasn't he Fred Rogers aka Mr. Rogers Neighborhood's brother? One more hang out.. going to Ships Galley or Oscars as a kid for a burger with fried onions. Now one thing you have to be careful with when ordering at the Lantern is Fried rice.. "Flied Lice" is what you might get. Dom, us men if the cloth are underpaid and overworked.. toss in a box of cigars no White Owls either and we might have a deal. Zzzzzzzzzzap! I should have never quoted the most holy Father O Dougherty and may God strike me dead!It was only a matter of time.

Fred email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Captain, I'm not sure if you think I am who I am. I'm just a tad bit older than you, but much much wiser. And you had the honor of giving me my name.

The old clubhouse was cool in it's own way...the porch was the best. The old chairs and couch are at the new club, I think. Horrible to sleep on, but cool to sit in & hang out.

I hope we can golf together sometime this summer, Captain, if you're up for the challenge. Any other golfers in this group?

Drifter, your story about the paper triangle in Mr. Krause's room made me laugh out loud, too.

Captain America email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
I know who you are Fred. Although, I must admit that I don't remember WHY I started calling you Fred. Back in middle school was it? Just a few short years before your triumphant trip to the state golf tournament and the multitude of club championships. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on my summer trips to the Big Two.

The New Clubhouse is great, but how can you beat the listing foundations and horrible plumbing of the old one???

TWO-Z email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001

DO WE HAVE NEW PEOPLE IN HERE OR DO YOU GUYS HAVE A FEW PERSONALITIES WITH NAME CHANGES????

Best meeting place.... shorecrest bar, Where the PBR flows like a river!!!

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Miller's used to be a late night hangout once in a while. We'd go in there late and drink coffee, which is exactly what you need to be doing before bedtime.

Oscar's was, of course, the place to eat. We used to get french fries to go for years there, and they were great! Did anyone else get those?

And yes, our family went to Shorecrest. As someone else mentioned, it had outstanding sea food. In fact, I had my pre-wedding rehearsal dinner there. They did a hell of a job.

Skipper email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
I remember the kind, helpful gent behind the counter at the old clubhouse, man what a crab.....

bloop email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Does anyone remember the wonderful parties at K.O.'s house? Not only could you get a snoot full but you also could get your first lesson on becoming a weekend weather person. I believe this is the location where Skipper learned how to use a "pointer" similiar to that of his old jogging friend, Richard Berler. Skip would chronilogically point out with a 3 foot ruler: Keith, Kim, Karen, Kathy, Kristy. Damn, he became really good at that!

Skipper email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
That was YOU!! I remember one of our friends in the bathroom shower stall with the shower curtain shut, when a girl came in and sat on the hopper, he would fling the curtain back and say, "you are not leaving till you give me a kiss", he was the same gent who dabbles in the homebrew....

Torggy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-22-2001
Well, hangouts for the French River group were a little differant than where you cityfied folk went. No places with pizza or pool or colorfull characters in a golf club. The loop for us was down Greenwood road, behind the church, through the woods to the damn. Then down the river to the Hwy. 61 bridge and follow the road to Ollie's candy store. Back up to Greenwood and repeat. We used to go to the Wonderland store, Johnson's drive-inn and Tom's logging Camp. When back home we always go to Shorecrest at least once to eat and more to drink. For a special treat it is Lakeview Castle for late night drinks.

Who is the Shorecrest crew?

Remember the old Holiday station when it was a little white building on the corner? The folks would say, "We need gas. Let's go to Erickson's..." Is Kitty back in detox?

TWO-Z email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
YOU GUYS REALLY CRACK ME UP. I REMEMBER GETTING LOCKED IN THE HOLIDAY BATHROOM. HA HA HA. NOT MUCH TO DO IN THERE. HA HA, I KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS ARE THINKING.

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
There was another gas station (Mobil, I think) located on 7th Ave. next door to the old National Food Store. It was about the size of a THHS locker, but it featured an excellent variety of candy and became a required stop on the way home from basketball practice.

Denny's Chef email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
I remember the old holiday gas station and running in there and buying snacks etc when going to foot ball practice. Nothing like some licorece or pixie stix before chatting with Chuck H.

Drifter email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
Load up on snacks before doing 20 hills?? RAAAALPH!!

TWO-Z email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
YOU ARE CORRECT TWC, THEY DID HAVE AN EXCELLENT VARIETY. I USUALLY WENT TO THE DIME STORE WHEN THE FUNDS ALLOWED. (NOT THAT OFTEN.) HA HA HA DRIFTER. WE COULD GET AWAY WITH IT THEN THOUGH.

Captain America email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
B-Loop is Dave Stanko?

I remember stopping at either Bakery on First Avenue for rolls and snacks as we would hike from the Minnehaha to THHS for swimming/gym class. Jim Udovich never did quite catch on to that trick.

Skipper, I think the kind old man you refer to might be Butch Kolberg. You're right, he was a bitch wasn't he?

Drifter email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
I know for a fact that b-loop is not Stankowitz, but the two of them have been seen together in a vehicle referred to as the Magic School Bus. I remember the old golf course club house. As a kid a remember watching Tim Nordskog attempt to tee-off #1. I believe I witnessed 3 or 4 whiffs (being conservative) before he finally drove a worm burner down the fairway. Do kids still sneak on old hole #2?? Two-Z: Did you play football in high school??

Nugget email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
I barely remember the Northland, when did that go, does anyone remember? I remember the old Holiday and Texico stations, and the National T when it was next to the Texaco. My step-mother used to work there and a group of us would go in steal Juicey Fruit gum and butter rum Lifesavers. That was well before there was a Hardees and we skated at the old rink on that piece of land. My sisters both worked at Oscars so it was free burgers and fries after baskeball practice for years. I had forgotton about all the visits to the 1st ave bakery...and in the old days when the theater was still open that was the place to be in the late grade school years...you guys are shaking loose the memories...

Captain America email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
Ah Drifter, the priceless memory of "The #2 Sneak"...More than once I participated in that piece of grand larceny. I'm sure The Sneak will exist as long as their is a #2 to be Snuck upon. ;-)

Nugget email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
Speaking of the golf course, I remember when we used to lay in wait along the #9 fairway on cool fall nights with bags of apples to pelt cars as they came into TH on 61. I remember one night when about 12 of us launched at a semi and nobody hit it. The next car through was a little VW bug and nobody, and I mean nobody, missed.

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Meeting Places in and Around TH03-23-2001
I am not a golfer (nor do I play one on TV), but while walking the course with two buddies on a summer night, we had the honor of watching one of America's great club throwers. His name was Gene Gangestad, and he heaved one about 150 yards right in front of us. It was like watching Nicklaus in his prime.

I'm trying to remember the name of the old crab at the clubhouse, and I want to say it was Ned Lundberg, or Lundgren, or something like that.
