The last topic ended up with 51 posts. Pretty weird. I think I have it figured out now thought. There were two of us that were in the process of writing posts in the last topic, so it let us both finish. I know, I know, this is really some useless inane commentary on my part. The good thing this shows is that the bulletin board is really busy! That is truly excellent! Lots of good stuff getting talked about. Kudos to all of you. I really enjoy reading your posts, the goofy ones and the intellectual ones. Keep it up!

Nugget email icqRe: Keep it up04-19-2001
White Chevy...you are correct on your hiway - defense tie. Eisenhower modeled our system after Hitler's Autoban, which of course the Nazis built in anticipation of moving great masses of military equipment in short order...good call.

The stadium thing is interesting. The Exel Center has done wonders for downtown St. Paul and I think the city has a better shot at a Twins stadium than does Minneapolis, but there is an organized and vocal opposition to ANY public dollars for sports stadiums in the Cities, and as long as the school system is in such bad shape their argument looks good. I'd like to see a new stadium for lots of reasons, among them my desire to share outdoor baseball with my son. The thing that bothers me is that so many people associate civic pride to the quality of their pro teams and the buildings in which they play. Why can't people take pride in the quality of their local schools and the quality of the young people they help produce? Why do we have to tie our own sense of worth to a pro athelete who would leave town in a minute for a better contract?

I'm dumbstruck...

I don't know who the hell you are, but you have me pegged. (My Dad's Dad was Kermit, but he did have a brother Tom)

I try to think who would know the Kordares and my "GrandFat," but I have no clues as to who you are...you have sucessfully freaked the hell outtuv me with the "Blast From the Past."

Is Two-Z really Sandy Nosen?

About the new school in T.H.'s, I keep thinking of the baseball movie Kevin Costner was in, 'Field of Dreams': If you build it, they will come. It's true, even an addition on a school will boost enrollment, also, if a new school was built with the latest technology, parents would be lined up, waiting to enroll their kids. I know, money, money, money, but if taxpayers could only look to the future, they'd see it would be money well spent and worth it even for the economy of the community. Ooh, talk about your run-on sentence!

Captain, if you haven't already headed out to Lost Wages, have a great time, and don't loose too much.

As for identifying anyone in here, I'm just trying to keep it straight where everybody lives!

Kitty email icqRe: Keep it up04-19-2001
I hate it when I misspell in here! Loose = lose.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Keep it up04-19-2001
NO NO NO. BUT I DO KNOW LANA.

I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING. IF YOU GUYS FIGURE OUT WHO I AM, HOW AM I GONNA KNOW WHO YOU ARE? YOUR NOT GONNA TELL ME I'M SURE.

Captain America email icqRe: Keep it up04-19-2001
I hayt Miss Pelling in hear to Kittee.

As far as a new THHS goes, I feel that the community is too old right now. The younger people want a new school, and kids my age from out of town won't move home without one either.

Tying back into what TWC was saying earlier, a lot of the nation's infrastructure was built by the WPA during the Great Depression. THHS is an example of this. Economy drives infrastructure, but kind of in a backwards way sometimes...did that make sense?

Two-Z is really Lon Church.

Webman, you are plain crazy for working in that heat, we were in Mission, about 5 miles from the border, 92-97 all week, those Mexicans were working in the fields with long sleeves and long pants, hell I was in the pool and still hot, give me the cool northland anyday....I notice Coors is big down there alot of Miller High Life too, both Bud and Miller had breweries close I guess, Oh well carry on the great page, how come Nugget is so sporadic in here? I enjoy his entries....

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Keep it up04-19-2001
I believe I have forgotten to welcome Skipper back to the Midwest. I know your pain, Skipper. I have been to Texas several times in the fall, and even then the heat can be oppressive.

Nugget raised some interesting questions about athletes and notoriety a while back. Having dealt with this in my line of work, I can only guess that some of it deals with our culture's admiration of power, wealth and fame. Whether it's right or wrong, athletes have more of all three than anyone, except perhaps movie stars. And we place them on a pedestal, too.

cruiser email icqRe: Keep it up04-19-2001
I say THHS should be built with donations from the NEW BIG NOISE development discussed earlier. People would come and drink and gamble knowing that the money was going to a good cause. Better yet, lets just build the school right at Big Noise, that way parents could go and pick up there kids, go have a few cold ones before going home every day.Maybe they can fly in fresh Lone Star beer every day as the daily special, that way we can keep the Mexicans employed too.

Me and the wife are both home today so we will take advantage of the time together to go look at some flea market/antique store stuff. I spotted a couple of really nice 59 Chevys at one of them. They also have a Plymouth Duster that reminds me of the white one Fitzy used to abuse. Fitzy's car had a name, but I can't remember what it was. Anybody else? The other "named car" I remember was also a Mopar. It was a convertible owned by one of the Lamo's called "Psychotic Reaction." Quite appropriate.

TWO-Z email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
I DATED FITZY A COUPLE OF TIMES AND FOR THE LIFE OF ME I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE CAR EITHER.

OK FINE, NO MORE CLUES ABOUT ME THEN. I WILL SAVE IT FOR WHEN I MEET SOME OF YOU IN TH.

webman email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
Here is something a little different . . . . Most of you probably know I live in the South. I got into a semi-heated discussion with one of my co-workers over the "Stars 'n' Bars" Confederate flag. This was brought on by the present dispute in Mississippi over their present state flag which incorporates the old Confederate flag in its design. They voted a couple of days ago to keep this flag. My co-worker feels that the Confederate flag is a symbol that people should be proud of. Part of our history and all that. She would like to see it prominently displayed all across the South.

I told her that I felt quite differently about that issue. While I realize that the Civil War was not just about slavery, but also about economics and state's rights, etc., etc. Nonetheless, I am quite sure that the great majority of the African-American population of the South finds the rebel flag offensive. Much like the rest of the world views the swastika as a negative symbol.

So while I agree that the Confederate flag is indeed part of our heritage, I don't think that it is something to be exceptionally proud of, and I certainly don't think it should be flaunted when a large number of people find it offensive.

Growing up in pure white Two Harbors did not prepare me for dealing with issues of prejudice and race. My great-grandfather thought that a Swede marrying a Norwegian was an interracial marriage. I hope he was kidding. Funny, but kind of sad too.

Nugget email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
Beer, do I have to buy you dinner first? Webman, I agree with your analysis. And the concept of honoring this sacred past is bullshit. If they want to honor their sacred past, surely even a state as backward as Mississippi must have history museums. Put the flag there, honor those young men who died in the defense of something that they in their time felt was worth dying for, and then hope the state can rocket its way into the 21st century. When I left lily white TH and entered the Army, I was stunned to hear so many references to the belief that the Civil War was not over and that the South would rise again. It strikes me as unbelievable that people still feel that way, but clearly there are those who feel that way and they are sponsoring this whole flag issue debate. If ignorance is bliss, this country is brimming with happy people.

Torggy email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
Damn, get busy for a couple of days and you guys write all kinds of things in here that I want to contribute on. I too experienced the culture shock of leaving the world of Finlander jokes and landing in the armed forces full of people from all races. Some good friends were (for lack of a better term) from minority races. That said I feel the confederate flag is a non-issue. There are so many other important issues that African-American leadership could concentrate on. In just Philadelphia last year alone 300 African-Americans were killed by other African-Americans. Single parent families are another area of great concern. As a group they have so much to offer culturally to the greater community in the way of history, music, athletics and education. I wish their leaders would concentrate on the good things they have to offer and moving into the future, then issues like the flag would be non-existent. But instead the Jesse Jackson’s and Al Sharpton's of the world have made a business of race and continue to drag the rest of their community through the bad times over and over for their own personal gain. That said it is friday and I too hear the call of the wild Rainier.

Torggy email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
Hey Webby, great theroy for 51 entries, but does that explain 52 also?

Drifter email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
Twins win again! Complete game for Radke. I'll buy what Webman says about the 51 or 52 posts. In this case, I believe 3 people had the page up at the same time and then posted. At this point I see no other possible explanation. I love the last post from Cruiser.

webman email icqRe: Keep it up04-20-2001
Torrgy,

The weird thing about the flag issue is that it is usually brought up by white people. The African-American population does not seem to weigh in until some white joker wants to build some special monument or introduces some legislation like changing the state flag. I think the white folks do this as a play for the black vote around election time. Did you notice how it was only an issue in North Carolina (or South Carolina?) when McCain and Dubya were scrapping during the primaries?

I agree with your assessment of the need to address other issues. I particularly agree with this statement that I nicely cut and pasted from your post. "the Jesse Jackson’s and Al Sharpton's of the world have made a business of race and continue to drag the rest of their community through the bad times over and over for their own personal gain."

You remarked about the 300 deaths in Philadelphia, but you know, I work in Little Rock, which has a much smaller population that Philly, and there are usually around 100 murders annually in Little Rock. Every New Year's day the statewide paper prints the pictures and a short story about every murder during the past year. It is very sad to see that 90-95% are black.

I remember when I lived in Texas and people would talk about seceding from the U.S. and having Texas be a separate country again. That and the famous, "The South Shall Rise Again" slogan. That sort of thing always really pissed me off. The people that said that and/or had bumper stickers with the various slogans were invariably ignorant morons. All they seemed to remember from their limited education was that Texas was once an independent nation, and that there was some sort of war between the North and South. I liked to ask them if they knew who the president of Texas was, or if they knew who fought at the Alamo, when was the Alamo, or when was that darn war between the North and South, and who might the respective presidents have been. You guessed it ... none of the ignorant had a clue. That always made them angrier. I must say that I always had a clear path towards the door. I didn't really want them to hang me as some sort of Yankee spy.

Nugget you are absolutely right on with your ignorance is bliss remark. The world must indeed be full of happy people.

Torggy email icqRe: Keep it up04-21-2001
I agree that it is quite often whites reaching for votes that brings up issues like the flag. But if the Africa-American leadership would concentrate on the important issues and moving to the future those types of issues would have no traction. So many politicians (mainly those on the left) try to divide us into little groups and then promise those little groups somthing the other groups have so that they can gain votes. I grow very tired of the politics of class warfare and class envy. The "he has more mnoney that me so take it from him and give it to me crowd" is the best example I can think of. These issues all deflect attention from the real things our leadership should be doing. Next.

bloop email icqRe: Keep it up04-21-2001
I return from a few days in Brainerd for a Pipeline Safety Meeting and I tune into Arbley and I feel like I'm listening to Face the Nation. Pretty deep, folks. What kind of flag could we fly at Big Noise next weekend? Maybe Cruiser has connections being a federal employee. If all else fails,we could always attach a white dishcloth on the CB antenna of the Magic Bus.

webman email icqRe: Keep it up04-21-2001
bloop, that is the best idea yet. thanks for putting it in perspective.

Drifter email icqRe: Keep it up04-21-2001
B-Loop: The white dishcloth will work, but only if it doesn't interfere with our reception of the hottest team in baseball on the old AM dial. We also must listen to the Saturday Blues show on KUMD while we are visiting the northland. Best damn blues show in the state...

DOM email icqRe: Keep it up04-21-2001
Just don't hang any more of my undies on any antenna. All of Brimson need not see my bacon strips.

Torggy email icqRe: Keep it up04-22-2001
DOM: Sounds like a childhood prank has left a long term mark. Should see someone about that.

Most corporations have their own flag, why should BNTNG be any differant. Maybe one of the beauties shown at the www.beer link. Any other suggestions? We also need a cause to give money to for the tax break. The school next door could be an answer to this.

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Keep it up04-22-2001
Greetings, Arbleyites. I slipped out of home for a few days to accompany my son to a youth baseball tournament in Kansas City and to take in a Royals. A good time was had by all, except the Toronto Blue Jays, who blew a four-run lead and then had the audacity to lose the game in the bottom of the 13th just after we left the stadium!

Interesting discussion in here about flags and what they represent. I'm not sure I completely agree that it's a non-issue. Certainly, racism exsists on several levels, and perhaps attacking it in the economic/political sphere is more important. But racism begins with thought, with a mind-set, and to millions a flag with the Stars and Bars is no different that shouting "Nigger" from a rooftop. Only when the mind-set is changed will this country move past the viciousness in its past. And one way to move past this is to let go of its symbols. Hence, the Confederate flag should be gone - now. And forever.

Skipper email icqRe: Keep it up04-22-2001
Excellent stuff Chev!!!!

DOM email icqRe: Keep it up04-22-2001
Hey honkies....lighten up!

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Keep it up04-22-2001
OK, I'm off my soapbox. It's been stored right where I'll never find it - in the middle of the living room!

I find myself dealing with another problem. I'm running alongside the Twins bandwagon, getting ready to jump on. The thing is, they have some big series coming up against Boston, the Yanks, etc. But I'm getting psyched, knowing full well the bandwagon could be in the ditch by May.

And how about that Viking draft? Mr. Bennett could be a good back, but I'm now convinced the men in Purple will have to score 84 points each game to win. Any thoughts?

And one more thing. Visiting Kauffman Stadium in KC brought home once again how much fun baseball can be in the right environment. Maybe Carl Pohlad will win the Lottery and donate the proceeds to a new stadium in the Cities. Then again, maybe not.

Drifter email icqRe: Keep it up04-22-2001
I like the Vike's choice of Bennett. Any time you have an opportunity to get a skill position player that you feel can win a game by himself you better take him. I know, B-Loop, defense wins championships, but I still agree with the pick. It's been "raining like a son of a bitch" here pretty much all weekend. We need heat and sun. I sure hope the gods of Indian Lake bless us with better weather next weekend.

webman email icqRe: Keep it up04-23-2001
TWC, Your views are right in line with mine. I usually keep my soapbox stored away, but once in a while I enjoy getting righteously indignant about one thing or another. As I get older, I sometimes wonder if it would do me more good to use the old box for step aerobics. But seriously, we need to air some of these thoughts and issues. That way we at least stand a chance of making a difference. So there.

Drifter email icqRe: Keep it up04-23-2001
Webman -- You summed up this message board very well awhile back when you said "I really enjoy reading your posts, the goofy ones and the intellectual ones…" I totally agree. As far as the flag issue goes, I just don't know… Part of me says that if we keep hearing that a group of people are offended by something said, or a symbol of something, that it should be replaced with something less offensive. But then, there's a part of me that is growing tired of people seemingly being offended by far too many things (sport team nicknames, etc). It seems with all this political correctness out there, it leaves you wondering if you should say anything, or stand for anything these days. For the record, on this one issue, however, I lean more toward getting rid of the Confederate flag...

TWO-Z email icqRe: Keep it up04-23-2001
WELL SAID DRIFTER. I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU. IT DOES GET OLD. ALWAYS ISSUES AND EVERYBODY IS CORRECT.

I KNOW, WE HAVE A RIGHT.

THIS WEATHER SUCKS. CUT DOWN A BUNCH OF TREES SATURDAY IN THE COLD WIND. IS IT GONNA GO FROM WINTER TO SUMMER?

DOES ANYBODY ELSE FIND IT OFFENSIVE THAT I WRITE IN ALL CAPS?

UH OH. ANOTHER ISSUE. SORRY.

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Keep it up04-23-2001
On a very unserious note, Torggy and I have been discussing the Indian Lake excursion that some of you will be making. Since not all of us can attend and this has become an event wrapped in tradition, we feel it's time to take this trip to the next level.

That's right. Television coverage.

Never mind all of those piddly details, such as how do you get a satellite uplink near Indian Lake. No problem. We think that the Magic Bus could be properly outfitted with the proper, state-of-the art equipement in no time at all. As for cost, no problem. We'll just borrow against the millions that BNTNG will bring in, assuming that it gets built of course.

Now, we think that a top-notch TV journalist is a must to anchor the 24/7 coverage. Among the names tossed into the outhouse have been Robin Leach, Geraldo Rivera and Jerry Springer. If Springer gets the job, the neo-Nazis skinheads who have slept with their younger cousin's mother's 12-year-old daughter will be optional.

We await your thoughts, fellow Arbleys
