| Agats | Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| My name is in honor of the time in the mid-seventies that the school ordered bunches of gym bags and the printer forgot to include the "e". Anyway, does THHS have a sports hall of fame? Your comments about Lute O got me a-wundrin. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| Agats: I remember the erroneous gym bags you mentioned, but I liked the Minnehaha Mountain Movers tote bags better. Yes, I'm pretty sure THHS started a Sports Hall of Fame a few years back, although I'm not sure who has been inducted. Can anyone else offer some insight? | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| There is in fact a sports hall of fame at THHS. The only inductees that I can name right now are Chuck Halstad and Pat McKenzie. I think some of the 1926 (?) State Championship Boys BB team are inducted also. Anybody else remember any names? Any thoughts on who *should* be in there? | ||
| agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| Dan Boyce,(was it Dan?) Most Floor Burns. Smoothy Evans. Just For Being Him. Mark McDonald, Best Hair Cut. Sorry, I Digress. | ||
| VOR | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| There is a sports hall of fame. I believe it is a couple day affair with golf, dinner, and finally the inducations. The hockey team also recently selected the 50 best players of 50 years of THHS hockey. | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| In my readings of the Lake County Comical, I recall a number of outraged citizens who thought the selection process for the top 50 THHS hockey player was unfair somehow. I guess I don't know why. For my money, the athletes and coaches from the late 80's and early 90's that deserve induction consideration are Doug Omtevedt, Troy Bolen, Nat Sando and Tom Nelson. | ||
| Falcon Edie | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| I seem to remember that Scott MacDonald was inducted into the HOF. And they did induct a bunch of hockey players about 16 months ago. Two of the players were my brother's. | ||
| Skipper | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| These double subjects tax my small brain, please stick to one thread, I think they have the Hall of Fame at the Normandy Inn here in the cities, I believe Ron Strom is one of the organizers, Bob Nyberg has something to do with it also I think..... | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| So we are talking two separate things, here, right?? There's an official THHS Hall of Fame (Scott MacDonald, Halsted, Kenz are members). Then, there's this "Top 50" hockey players thing (Edie's brothers). Am I understanding this correctly? Doug Norlander ('81) is the first one from my era that comes to mind. He made me see stars a few times in football practice. And his large calves stretched out the elastic on every pair of white tube socks (with maroon stripes) THHS owned. Drifter | ||
| butterloop | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| Can someone send Skipper a sewing machine left over from Jan Hockman's room? The boy can't even get a full thread done? Skip, I feel for you!! How about an Official BNTNG t-shirt to wear for the rainbow celebration in 3 weeks? Put your order in now;I know some people.I believe we will have to include a trip to the old Big Noise site in the Magic Bus. Maybe I can borrow a metal detector and find the set of pooka beads I think I lost there when the Cruiser and CENTERLINE played there. If Drifter is putting together an itinerary, he might take this suggestion under careful consideration.Does Ivan still get to clean the cans? | ||
| Skipper | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| Drifter will have an update out soon I am sure, you could drive that damn bus up and down the driveway and we would all still have fun, all web friends are welcome, mark your calendars NOW!!!!!! | ||
| Torggy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-04-2001 |
| Hey B-loop the BNTNG tee shirt thing sounds cool. Maybe a shot from the bar room scene on Star Wars? Or a shot of the old place on the front with the envisioned place complete with troughs on the back. The mind reels at the possibilities. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Looks like your back on this BNTNG thing. I tried. Incidently, I always had much more fun at B-Store than at Big Noise. Except for the out-of-doors facilities. At least Avis kept the lids indoors during the winter. | ||
| Torggy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Agats, sorry for deviating from the theme but, oh well. Hey, what and where was the B-Store. Sounds like my kind of place. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| The "B" stands for Brimson. Used to be across the tracks for Black Mike Perry's house. Burned down the winter of 81 or 82 I think. Huge loss. Spent many hazy (on so many levels) weekend afternoons playing box car poker as the DM&IR trains went by. | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Did the B-Store sit up by Wales Junction? | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| No. Past Hugo's and Indian Lake you go left at the George Lake intersection. Follow the road about a mile or so and you hit the railroad tracks. That's the spot. If you go past it you can take the old dump road and end up on the Stone Lake side of Hugo's or go straight and end up at (I forget the road number), but right to da range and left to Dulut. | ||
| Walt Aldinger | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Now boys, don't make smart remarks about the old store. Some of you are still on the Most Wanted List of the local sheriff. You were dishonest, ugly, and stinky people. You owe me money. I believe a raid on the Indian Lake dips might be in order. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Walt, How long you been out? You may be a little confused. B-Store and The Cozy Corner (AKA Walt Aldingers International Airport, Resort and Supper Club) are not the same place. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Our Gov. has finally cracked. Read this (taken from the Pioneer Press): Frequently referring to his military service, Gov. Jesse Ventura defended his understanding of state conservation policy in response to an outdoors column written by Dennis Anderson of the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. Ventura, who on Tuesday called Anderson into his office to discuss the issue with several members of his administration, referred to "hunting man" 13 times. "It’s wrong for you to insinuate that I don’t know how to hunt. Because when you hunt the ultimate foe, which is man, who can shoot back, you’re the best hunter on the planet," he said. The Sunday column had criticized Ventura and Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Allen Garber for what Anderson said was inadequate support for conservation. | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Well TWC, I guess if we need some muscle after our debacle in the Master's pool, we can just send the Governor to "hunt some men" down for us. But we probably couldn't afford him right? | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| And by the way Agats, in all my years of hunting in the greater Highland/Wales metropolitan area, I've never ventured past Hugo's into Deeper Brimson...I don't think I'd feel safe without a local guide... | ||
| VOR | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Nor have I ventured any deeper past Hugo's. But, I have been told by those you have, you can hear strange "banjo" music being played. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Smart. The local guides are the biggest problem. You'll go in but you'll never come out. Luckily I was adopted by a family of Wolves or maybe it was a family of Finns. It's all so foggy. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Yes, North Brimson can be an experience. If you travel the Cloquet River, it at times does remind you of the movie Deliverance. You should be safe as long as you don't look like Ned Beatty. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| North Brimson? Isn't that redundant? | ||
| Kitty | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Drifter, you are so funny! I've never even been to North Brimson, but I have some very clear images in my head, thanks to you! LOL | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| So where exactly is the geographical center of Brimson? Is there a Brimson Mason/Dixon line? Do the "North Brimsoners" hate the "South Brimsoners"?? VOR--what year did you graduate? You seem to know who I am, but I don't know who you are...would you be willing to give me a clue? | ||
| Sue | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| DOM, you have to be kidding about Britney. Please tell me your kidding. You guys really go to town in here. North Brimson, South Brimson, now that's funny. Jumpin Jim is in the middle. I've been on many road trips in Brimson. Got lost once and ended up way up north before we stopped at a bar for directions and that was several beers too late. LOL | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Cap, we can only hope that Jesse will need a new job and very soon. Maybe if he threatens to talk XFL with Duval and Westwood, they'll fork over the cash just to shut him up. By the way, wasn't there a classic movie called "East of Brimson," that starred James Dean? Or was that Heatwave Burler in his cinematic debut? | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| I think they were both in that movie. James Dean had the starring role and Heatwave was an extra who sat at the booth sipping a 3.2 beer out of a plastic cup. No, maybe that was Gary Burghoff... | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| I'm sorry, Drifter. I had it all wrong. Heatwave was Annette's love interest in that beloved 60s flick - "Beach Blanket Brimson." Replaced some ugly looking clod named Frankie, I believe. | ||
| Skipper | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| Twins win! at this rate they will be 162-0, not bad for the local nine! I thought "East of Brimson" was that Nam movie where Martin Sheen has to go up the Clouqet River to take out Electric Jim.... | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| I think I remember that movie now. Didn't Burgess Meredith play the part of Electric Jim?? | ||
| Torggy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-05-2001 |
| I'll bet it was all part of that secret government project called "The Brimson Experiment". I read a declassified report that talked about trying to cross Finlanders and wolves. Might explain alot about Agats foggy memory and some of the other goings on up there. We called it ore car poker in my day. Of course being from Waldo I had never seen anything other than an ore car going down the tracks. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Torggy, perhaps you're thinking about the early 90s film, "Dances with Finns" starring Kevin (Toivo) Costner as an Army solider who chooses to live among the locals in Brimson until he gets picked up for DWI by the Highway Patrol following a wild night at Hugo's. Antonio Banderas makes a brief appearance playing Walt Aldinger. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| The soundtrack for "Dances with Finns" sold over 2 million copies. It features the hit Country and Western single, "Tarbender, Another Blass of Geer" which was performed by Electric Jim and The North Brimson Swingers. The song was recorded live at Hugo's, featuring B-Loop on back-up vocals and Cruiser on trombone. Big Ed Park was in charge of audio. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Yes, I heard that Pat Cadigan tried to take charge of the "Dances with Finns" soundtrack. He attempted to bribe record company execs with Chimielewski Brothers cassettes and packages of kielbassa made by Eliott Meats. However, Cadigan's powerplay was foiled, and he was last seen trying to reunite the Haveri Brothers. | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| And who can forget the classic Broadway play turned movie, "West Brimson Story" about the rival Brimson gangs "The Sharks," "The Jets," and "The Finns." Good Lord, you guys crack me up...they're going to take away my internet access at work if I keep laughing so hard. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| The.White.Chevy: Impossible, The Ault Township Constable (Alias Hugo Hellman in my day) would never have let a law inforcement officer from a foriegn country arrest anyone while inside the borders of his domain. As I recall the punishment for Costner's DUI was to sweep and mop Hugo's Supper Club on Sunday morning and one dance with Mary Running Bear or Ray Nellimark (?spelling)at a date and time of his or her choosing. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Yes, Agats, after re-reading my copy of Roger Ebert's "The 10 Best Movies ever made about Brimson," I found that you are indeed correct. Constable Hellman was played in the movie by James Best, who of course was Roscoe P. Coltrane in the hit TV series "Dukes of Hazzard." The movie producers chose to overlook the fact that Best sounded like he'd just fallen off the back of a moonshine truck. In fact, I believe one of the regulars at Hugo's was used for voice-dubbing purposes. | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Hear's a brain teaser related to tinsel town. The famous actor Richard Widmark's half brother was a Hugo's regular for many years. What was his name? | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Bob Christiansen? | ||
| Agats | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Good guess but no. He would win as the most regular, regular customer and not just at Hugo's. He's a whole economy of his own. The man I'm thinking of has passed on I believe. Ask Hugo. E-Jim might know. | ||
| Captain America | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Joe Fabini? | ||
| Skipper | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| Who is Richard Widmark? | ||
| Skip | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-06-2001 |
| I'll take a guess and say Greg Repensky,how's that? | ||
| Walt Aldinger | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-07-2001 |
| Boys!!! The price of beer at Hugo's has risen to $2.50 per bottle. Pretty steep for Blatz. And this is without entertainment. You City boys better bring plenty of cash. Your friend Walt. | ||
| Drifter | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-07-2001 |
| We'll just bring our own in. Isn't that how it works? We are hopeful that "The Dancing Lesbians" will be there for the entertainment. I heard they put on quite a show a few years back. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-07-2001 |
| Well, the dynasty is over. The Twins have lost. Somewhere in the wilds of Northern Minnesota, Hugo's is serving cheap beer to its patrons (one of whom may or may not be Richard Widmark's brother) in an effort to ease their pain. Near the burned out scrap of land that used to be Big Noise, old ghosts are banging their heads against an imaginary turnbuckle in frustation. And somewhere, somehow, in spite of his pain, a man really is dancing like a son of a bitch. Life goes on. (Can anyone say, 161-1?) | ||
| Torggy | Re: Hall of Fame | 04-08-2001 |
| TWC- You the man. That is a great closing to the funniest thread there has been. Hope your trip to TH is safe and enjoyable. Stop into the Blackwoods, look around and wonder who you might know. | ||
