As a younger person, I don't recall many of the older establishments. Blackwoods is currently my favorite spot in town. Not smokey, cheap prices (happy hour) and good friends.

Where do others like to go? Where was the best spot in town?

Captain America email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Currently I think Blackwoods is the best in TH. You just can't beat drinking for 4 hours straight and paying $10...Perhaps I've seen you there before VOR?

And while the Legion of Doom and the Star Wars Cantina each hold their particular charm, there is just something about sucking back Miller High Life on a Wednesday night at the VFW while playing some smear that just appeals to me.

After a new high school, Two Harbors needs a bar with a view of Lake Superior--besides the VFW of course...

Ivan email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Stanko's basement for Cheap Trick karaoke night, if you could get the microphone away from him. Also, better to BYOB and stay away from aforementioned homebrew.

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Remember the Silver Dollar (before that I think it was called the Harbor Bar). It was a 3.2 dump downtown near where the Legion is now. I forget what the building is today -- someone help me. Anyway, I recall drinking green beer there one St. Patty's Day years ago. I shit green for days... I think the Silver Dollar closed its doors in the mid to late 80's. The Legion is always a good place to return over Heritage Days or holidays and look for people you haven't seen in ages. Other than the bad ventilation, hideous brown foam on the walls, and lousy service, it's a great place. Then there's the Dixie. Good place as long as the crazy owner doesn't show up drunk and kick everyone out of the place. VFW?? Still a great place to have a Bloody Mary (or three) after doing the "#2 sneak" at the golf course. Sorry for rambling...

DOM email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
How about the Landing? Located on the toxic dump once called Bacon Sales and Service. Pull up a stool next to crazy Erwin, play some pull tabs, talk to the one armed bandit, and listen to Randy Rustad belt out yet another Neil Diamond tune on the karaoke machine. It can't get much better than that.

VOR email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Yes Captaiin, I have run into you a few times at Blackwoods in town, and your right, you can hardly beat drinking for three-four hours and get a tab for $10.

The old Silver Dollar Saloon is currently the home of Russ Conrow Attorney.

VFW on a hot Friday afternoon during happy hour is the busiest place in town.

Shorecrest Crew email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Shorecrest is the best, where the PBR flows like a river!!! (Seems like I have said that before)

Captain America email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Well, that's more than one person who has known my identity...I guess I should have come up with a more original Chat Room Name. Oh well. VOR, next time I'm up in the Big Two please clue me in as to who you are as well.

The Drifter was right though--Heritage Days last summer at the Legion of Doom was a blast. If only it was like that every weekend!

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Let's not forget Hugo's. It may be just a 3.2 bar, but bring a few quarters for the jukebox, a bottle of your favorite booze, and a few dollars for set-ups and you're set for the evening. The TV reception is a bit snowy, but that just adds to the "woodsy" atmosphere of the place. The plastic cups are also a nice touch.

VOR email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
How about Earthwood. Pretty good food that is cheap, the best jukebox around. It is always fun to throw dice for the possibility of free beer and/or a cash prize.

If they would screen in the porch, it would be the best place to lounge around in the summer months.

E. Jim email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
The Earthworm is okay, but I hope they finally put a curtain on the window of the bathroom. You go to take a leak and anyone who is in the parking lot can see you (shoulders up albeit) doing your business.

VOR email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
That just allows you to keep on eye on who is entering the establishment. I believe there may be a connection to the show "The Godfather."

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
After consulting with my brother, the happy gent at the golf course was Mr. Forsell, once my brother and I walked onto the TH course, not knowing proper golf etiquette, we happened upon some golfballs in the fairway, we were like hey look it here's another, well before you know it a screech came from behind us, we had happened upon a foursome of old ladies balls that they were in the middle of playing, we ran like a son of a bitch and they were cussing the whole time in the background at us, oh well, carry on...

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
I can still hear that butcher's saw screeching when you walked into the old IGA when it was next to the theater....

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
I can still hear B-Loop's high pitched giggle when I walked into the IGA when it was across from the Minnehaha.... A young Skipper running like a son of a bitch??? That I would have liked to have seen...

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
By the way, Skipper, were you wearing your blue Pumas with the yellow stripe at the time?

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
No that was before those shoes, by the way they were called Clyde III's, purchased at Ray's shoe emporium, it was between those and the Puma Joe Namath's, they were green and white, being the disco era and the dancer I was, I opted for blue and yellow....this is a true story, the very first night I actually talked to my future wife we were at Chuck Harvey's cabin for a jammer in the middle of winter, the fire place was roaring and a bunch of us were sitting and talking (and partaking)I had new nylon Tigers on, after much conversation and more beer we left for home, imagine my surprise the next morning at home when the tongues of my new shoes were melted, ahh young love...Ivan can back that story up, carry on (is webby in detox?)

webman email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
Nah, I haven't been in detox since almost 20 years ago. I too have had some strange things happen to articles of clothing while imbibing.

webman email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-23-2001
I used to go sneakin' in the Beacon at lunch time in high school. It was excellent. You could get a few munchies at the bakery next store, buy a Coke from old Gunnar, and sit and smoke cigarettes and play some billiards. The old Legion club was pretty cool too. Used to spend the day either there or at the Harbor Bar when we would get out off work early from Jones Products (in the old railroad roundhouse). It always seemed funny to be walking around downtown, rip-roaring drunk, covered with grease and machine dust, at about 4:00 in the afternoon. People always seemed so impressed. They would turn and look, and then say things to their children. Those were the days . . . .

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Man, if you can really drink for hours in the Blackwoods and only spend $10, I've been spending too much time in the restaurant when I've been back!

I have also spent a few dollars in the Landing now and then, although never when anyone is doing karoke. When does Randy's CD come out?

And another thought: When it came to watering holes, there was no place like the Iron Range in its heyday. I remember riding down Main St. in Gilbert once, and counting 11 bars. Eleven! And there were only 2,000 people in the whole town!

And one more thing, since I'm getting off the topic here. In my college days, the big hangout was a Duluth bar called Mr. Js, which served cheap beer and plenty of testosterone, not to mention a good jukebox and good games. It was very popular and then it just vanished sometime in the 80s. I believe it became a casualty of Grandmas.

Denny's Chef email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Skipper I will give you a lesson on grocery stores.. The old IGA was really where J&J lumber is today. The grocery store next to the old theater was the Co-Op grocery store. And the National T was up on 7th next too Udenbergs Texaco Station. Speaking about the old duffer at the old club house, he could fry up a mean burger for lunch. Of course no one knows where the burger came from. Being so close to Hwy 61 and since one would rarely see road kill it kind of makes you wonder. Do we have D. Stanko running loose here? Your bro Mike was a good man! Give me the nod if you are here.

Captain America email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
My favorite place in Duluth these days is probably the Brew Pub in Fitger's. Nice laid back place, good beer.

I've heard legend of such places as the Brass Phoenix and the Warehouse from my older sister---perhaps some of you "more experienced" drinkers could revel us with a tale from one of those establishments??

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
That's right it was co-op, not IGA.

Falcon Edie email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
When we were seniors in high school the big place to hang out was Mayor's Brass Rail in Superior and The Cove (for dancing). They changed the drinking age to 18 in Minnesota in May or June of 1973 so we were able to imbid at the VFW when the opportunity presented itself (or when the regulars would allow us in the door).

Falcon Edie email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Sorry, that should be imbide.

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
O

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Don't try to put more than two O's together or that will happen, here is are few watering holes from way back...souptown, Eagle's Club,Casablanca(both places),Lamplighter(they had the house drink called a "summer hummer"),in Duluth the Wharehouse was a very fun place Captain, Mr. Arthur's, the Reef, here is a blast from the past remember Chico's?(used to be the London House at one time) I think I have asked before, does anyone remember when Cudda's was by Silver Cliff?

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Good call on the Reef, Skipper. A fine bar. We've talked a lot about bars, but here's a drink from the 70s - the legendary gin buck. A favorite at the VFW way back when.

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
When I was in High School the drinking age in MN was 19 and in WI 18, so of course many people would cross the bridge and hit Soup Town. Yes, the Cove was the hot spot for dancing, with the disco music and strobe lights. I also remember the Eagles and the Yellow Submarine. Wasn't there a bar called The Star also?? There were so many in Soup Town it is hard to remember them all.... Now it is time to see if Duluth East can defeat Osseo for the boys high school basketball championship.... Drifter

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
TWC -- How can one forget the Gin Buck? I think the only place in this world where you can order a Gin Buck (and people know what it is) is in TH. Excellent.

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
um, I have never heard of a Gin Buck.....

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Don't worry about it, Skipper. I drank them but I barely remember them! Now why would that be?

Drifter probably knows better than I, but a gin buck consists of (of course) gin, and line juice, and what else, I don't know. But you get the idea.

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Dammit! I meant lime juice!

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
I'm sure it taste like pine needles like every other gin drink....man, I picked Stanford all the way, they got spanked today!

The.White.Chevy email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
Oops! Well, skipper. I believe the Spartans will sneak on the field and win their second straight national championship.

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-24-2001
I think a Gin Buck is Gin, sour, and 7-up. I could be wrong. Osseo was just too much for East. Rickert will be a good college player, though. I have Maryland on the NCAA board at work. So far so good.

Torggy email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
Well while we are at it one place I like alot and have gone to for years is Lakeview Castle. A guy I graduated with owns the place and it has become a check in place as we all visit home. Does anyone remember the little bar just down the road from the Castle? Called the Forest Inn, used to have cabins in back and a little chapel under the trees to pray forgiveness for what went on in the bar and cabins.

b-loop email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
Don't forget the powdered sugar in the Gin Buck! Don't forget Tommy Burn's Bar in Souptown, Skipper.Funny thing about Burn's Bar- With my chubby little Bobby Brady looking face, Burn's Bar cheerfully served (even) me and the rest of the boys all through my Jr. year of high school. Those quarter taps were the lone source of courage that overcame Skipper and turned him into a disco-mogul at the Cove. I believe he patterned his routine after a gent named Clark Kent as it seemed he always had a spare change of clothes in the car to become Two Harbors' answer to Johnny Travolta! Word has it Skip enjoyed countless hours at the Cove with the likes of Henry Harper, Mike Seeber, and fellow classmate, Randy "BIGS" Bigelow.Ooohhh- that man could dance!

TWO-Z email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
A GIN BUCK CONSISTS OF GIN, GINGERALE AND A TWIST OF LIME. I STILL DRINK THEM ON A HOT SUMMER DAY SITTING ON THE DECK GLAZING AT THE LAKE. AFTER A WHILE FISH START TALKING TO ME. MAYBE IT'S THE GIN TALKING. AH LIFE IS GOOD. ALOT OF BARS DON'T HAVE GINGERALE SO THEY TRY PASSING OFF 7-UP WITH A SPLASH OF COKE. YUCK!!!!!!

I TOO GLAZED ALL MENTIONED BARS LISTED ABOVE. I REMEMBER GETTING INTO THE COVE WHEN I WAS 16.

WILL HAVE TO CHECK OUT BLACK WOODS THIS SUMMER AT HAPPY HOUR. WILL PROBLY HAVE TO CHECK OUT ALL THE BARS WHEN I'M THERE. BY THE TIME I GET HOME I WILL BE ASKING MYSELF WHAT REUNION. HA HA

SKIPPER, TOO FUNNY ON THE SHOES. SO YOUR A DISCO MOGUL. SHOW US SOME MOVES SKIP.

WEBMAN, ANY LUCK GETTING CS IN HERE?

b-loop email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
Ivan might remember this story as I know Skipper does- Because Skipper was a young buck in our grade, Sept. 5 B-day, a carload or two went down to Souptown during our Sr. year to engage in some fun. Because the Disco-King was only 17, he would use the "I forgot my I.D. out in the car" line whenever he was carded. On one particular trip, we were able to convince the bouncer at the Eagles Club that Skip must surely be of age because we brought a Yearbook along and showed the gatekeeper Skipper's grad picture in the annual. Not everyone can say they've used the Nor'Easter to enable themselves to belly up to a bar. Just another feather on Skipper's long-listed resume.

Fred Astaire email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
Was Disco Bob Envall a student of Skippers? Maybe there was more than one dance studio in Two Harbors besides Brenda Quigley Moe. Fess up,Skipper!

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
You people are just plain cruel!

Drifter email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
I have heard that Skipper will be showing off some of his old disco moves at Hugo's the weekend of April 27-29. Come see for yourself what everyone is talking about. I wonder if he'll bust out the old Blue and Yellow Puma's for the occasion?? "He can dance like a son of a bitch"

TWO-Z email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. IT'LL BE OK SKIP.

webman email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
TWO-Z,

I have not heard from CS. There is no reason I can think of that a person could not get into this forum. Does CS have my email? It is harbormaster76@yahoo.com

Skipper email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
In all honesty I was the biggest wallflower in the history of TH, I always waited for the ladies to ask me, before I new it, I was riding home in the red Chev with a snoot full and no phone numbers, the Nor'easter story is true though, you know, when prodded I CAN dance like a son of a bitch!!!

cruiser email icqRe: Along same lines.. Best watering Hole03-25-2001
