| I DON'T THINK THAT IT MATTERS MUCH WHAT TOPIC WE HAVE. HAPPY EASTER TO ALL. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-14-2001 |
| I'll drink to that! | ||
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-14-2001 |
| Hey there TWC it is great to hear from ya. Glad to hear you had a good visit to TH. But the confrontations with old teachers sounds scary. I have not had much time lately as I have a house full from French River that are glad to get away from all that nasty weather you encountered there. | ||
| b-loop | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| Are the Minnesota Twins for real?? When they swept the Tigers to begin the season, you could feel cautiously optimistic. But to beat the WhiteSox twice?? Could 01 be a repeat of 87 or 91? I know, it's very early. It's just great to see the minor league payroll team doing well in the big leagues. Can you say-UNDERDOGS- | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| 8-2 baby!! Will the Twins keep it up? Who knows, but they will be a fun team to follow this year. A good pitching staff and a bunch of hungry young guys. I hear Ivan cross-checked a teenage boy while getting a foul ball at Friday's game (really!!). TWC - Thanks for the TH update. | ||
| Ivan | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| Yes, Ivan cross checked and bloodied a 15 year old kid and almost put a little old lady in traction while diving for a foul ball on Friday night. Ivan was victorious in the scuffle but lost half his beer and sustained a head wound, which is now healing nicely. Ivan later gave the ball to the bloodied, battered, and crying teen. Amazing what people will do to get a 3 dollar scuffed up baseball. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| I just called up the Allete.com Web site, and it's either raining like hell in Duluth, or an angry seagull just spit all over the camera lens. Nothing makes me happier than the Twins kicking the snot out of the White Sox. Their TV announcers are the most obnoxious asses in the business, or at least they're a close second to Jerry Reinsdorf, the owner. The Twins' fast start is great. They'll need to keep hitting at least a few homers, and the bullpen will have to be solid. I'm not sold on LaTroy Hawkins as a closer yet. But the starters look tough and I think the Twins will play solid defense. And maybe (gasp!) some people will actually come to watch them play. | ||
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| Yes the Twins are doing great but there is allot of season left to go. Ivan How did you get the head wound? Did the little old lady hit you with her purse? You need to be careful about spilling your beer, that is alcohol abuse ya know. Sounds like a good time was had by most. Even I with my objection to taxpayer support of sport stadiums hope that the package put together by the Twin ownership works out. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| IVAN, TOO FUNNY. WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO WITH YOU. I'LL GIVE YOU $3.00 IF YOU CATCH ME A BALL AT THE NEXT GAME. I WANNA SEE THIS. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| Twins sweep! A fine day, even though I had to listen to the White Sox announcers whine all the way through the game on WGN (I don't get the Twins TV casts on my dish - yet). Here's a souvenir baseball story for you. Three years ago, we went to a Cardinals-Twins game at the Dome when McGwire was in the middle of breaking the homer record. Well, late in the game, Big Mac finally launched one to left, right over our heads in the bleachers. The scramble for the ball began immediately. Unfortunately, my son chose that exact moment to return from the concession stand. He walked down the aisle and promply got knocked over and stepped on. Needless to say, he wasn't happy. Anyway, after all of the scuffling for the ball, it ended up in the lap of a guy all decked out in Cardinal gear who didn't have to move a muscle. So some people ended up taking a picture of thise guy and his new McGwire ball.A consolation souvenir, I guess. | ||
| Sports Buff | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| Who was the greatest hitter to play the game? My choice is Ted Williams. He was a tremendous hitter for average. And he would hold the home run record if he had not served two hitches in the Marines. Any other choices?? | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-15-2001 |
| Yes, the Twins once again looked good this afternoon. Best start in their history.... By the way, Skipper sent me an e-mail from TX. A direct quote -- "It's hotter than an SOB down here.." Anyway, he wanted me to say hello to the Arbley crew. I believe he will be back in MN sometime tomorrow. I can't dispute the Ted Williams selection from Sports Buff. Last man to hit .400 and he could do it all. I wonder just how many homers he would have ended up with if not for his serving time in the military. He missed like 5 years of baseball in his prime and still had over 500 home runs. I believe he was also near the top of the league in walks each year. And did he not hit a home run on his last major league at bat?? | ||
| Captain America | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| I return to "the Cities" after a brief journey to The Big Two. A monumental occurence Friday night, as the identity of the Voice of Reason was revealed to me over a couple brews at Blackwoods. Not to fear though VOR, your secret is safe with me. Saturday was a perfect day in TH. My woman and I sat down by Agate Harbor watching the Presque Isle come into port and then proceeded later to take the Lake Walk all the way around to Burlington Bay...thus completing a tour of the two harbors in Two Harbors. Of course though, Sunday afternoon we had snow. What a fu#$ed up weather pattern. I think former Agate Brian "Scooby" Hedin was the best baseball player of all time. | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
Well, in my humble opinion, Ted Williams wasn't even close to being as good as Ron Coomer or Bombo Rivera. But if you're looking for the ultimate combination of power and average from the left side, then - yeah, you have to go with Teddy Ballgame ![]()
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| Bombo Rivera, Willie Norwood, Hosken Powell. Best outfield combination ever! Drifter | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| Drifter! Now that you've got my memory bank working, I now have to mention two immortal sluggers - Bob (Shoe Dog) Gorinski and Craig Kusick, both of whom were supposed to be the second coming of Harmon Killebrew. I think they just missed - by about 550 homers. On a more serious note, any discussion of great hitters must include mentions of Stan Musial, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby and Joe DiMaggio. And of course, there's Rod Carew, the best hiiter I ever saw with my own two eyes. | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| I remember both Gorinski and Kusick. Kusick has a son who was a decent quarterback over at UW-LaCrosse. I believe he (Kusick's son) has caught on with one of the Arena Football teams. Carew was a fantastic contact hitter, as was Wade Boggs. Boggs actually batted over .400 during a 162 game stretch in the mid-late 80's which covered the end of one season and the beginning part of the next season. Didn't Carew steal home like 7 times in one season?? I loved the way he ran. His upper body, arms, and head would barely move.... he was sneaky and quick. | ||
| Captain America | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| With the Twins winning, I've noticed a general greater interest in MLB this year. I've even been asked to "play hookey" and attend a day game on Wednesday...I still don't know though. MLB has soured for me with the constant strikes, lockouts, lack of revenue sharing and all that garbage. But, I guess if the small market Twins stay competitive maybe I'll change my tune and get behind them again. The best seat and baseball ticket in town is still watching the Gophers at Siebert Field though... | ||
| Nugget | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| Its nice to see fans in the stands again. Last year, in the final weeks of the season, I went to a Wed late morning game against Baltimore. Admittedly, my purpose was to get Cal Ripkin's autograph for a friend, but the announced attendence was well under 1,000. I dislike the dome for baseball (or any sport), but with under 1,000 people there, is was more than a little weird. | ||
| Skipper | Re: CARRY ON | 04-16-2001 |
| I am back my friends, glad to see all are having fun and enjoying themselves, Lonestar has been secured and waits for the Indian Lake spring trip, it is HOT in Texas, glad to be home, Chev I watched that Twins game on WGN also, their announcers do whine alot, no prettier swing than one Roy Smalley.... | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| EVERYBODY IS PRETTY QUITE NOW AFTER LAST NIGHT'S TWINS GAME. GUESS WHAT, I GET TO START TRAVELING TO TH ONCE A MONTH FOR BUISNESS. LUCKY ME. | ||
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| You don't sound so exited there ZZ. Some of us would give up body parts to have business in TH. I too liked Rod Carew. His ability to get on base was amazing. He found ways to do things that no one had ever thought of. Myself and my French River visitors go to the Mariners - Rangers tonight in the new last year stadium in Seattle tonight. A-Rod's second night in Seattle since his move to Texas and the big contract. He was booed last night and I am sure will be again tonight. Should be interesting. Welcome back from the south there Skipper. Hope you and yours had a good vacation. Even Minnesota's weather is nice after getting crispy crittered in Texas huh? I am not a big fan of hot weather either. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| ACTUALLY TORRGY I DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY. | ||
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| I know ZZ work is still work no matter where it happens. And work is a four letter word. | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| Skipper returns! I bet he will have a hard time getting through the next ten days before the Indian Lake trip. The Twins need a new stadium. That dome is an embarrassment to the game. I will be contacting my state representative regarding the latest plan which is out there where the Twins pay for 96% of the new stadium, and there will be no increase in sales or income taxes. Now how can you beat that? Have fun at the game tonight, Torg. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| I KNOW TORRGY. ALTHOUGH IT IS GOOD TO SEE NEW JOBS STARTING IN TH. IT WILL ONLY START OUT AS A COUPLE THOUGH. AND YES, MY TRIPS UNFORTUNATLY WILL BE FOR WORK NO PLAY BUT I STILL GET TO BEAT THE LOOP AND LOOK AT THE SITES ONCE A MONTH. DRIFTER YOUR KILLIN ME. AS MUCH AS THE TWINS MAKE THEY SHOULD PAY FOR 100%. | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| ZZ - The Twins make money? Since when? | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| SINCE THEY DON'T HAVE A SALARY CAP. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| WE PAY FOR THEM TO PLAY SO MAYBE THEY SHOULD PAY FOR US TO WATCH IN THEIR NEW STADIUM. | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| The Twins have been reporting operating losses around $7-10 Million a year over the last several years. Very few teams in the league report earnings (actually make money). We do not pay the players to play, the owners do. Should a millionaire owner pay for a new stadium? You could make that argument. But then again, the state receives a lot of money in income taxes and business revenues by having the Twins around. If the state isn't willing to kick in a little to keep baseball around, then they shouldn't provide subsidies for any of businesses in this state -- Northwest airlines, farming, etc etc. Just my thoughts.... | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| AND WHERE DO YOU THINK THE OWNERS GET THE MONEY. US. THEREFORE WE DO PAY THE PLAYERS TO PLAY. AND I'M TALKING ABOUT THE PLAYER'S THEMSELVES TO PAY FOR THE STADIUM. THERE NOT LOSING ANY MONEY. JUST MY THOUGHTS.... | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| So should all employees pay for the buildings they work in? | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| WE ARE QUICK TODAY AREN'T WE. I THINK WORK IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFRENT SUBJECT. NOBODY IS PAYING ANYBODY TO WATCH ME AT WORK. | ||
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| Sport teams fall into that place between money and loyalty. Many teams show a yearly loss. It is when they sell for 500% (or whatever) more than they were bought for that the money is made. As much as we all like sports it is still a business. For years the owners made the money and the players were taken advantage of. Now they both seem to get lots and it all comes from our pockets. I realize that sport stadiums make money in taxes and create revenue for the general public, but so do grocery stores, tire shops, restaurants and all the other businesses it takes to get by these days. They are not near as exciting as a 400 foot home run but those businesses do not get the taxpayer support that stadiums often do. If you run a business that requires a huge stadium you should have to foot the bill for it and the impact on the local area just like the real-estate developer has to. That real-estate development has a big affect on the pride and loyalty of the community also. This is a tough subject with many sides. There is no one pat answer for all cities. The new deal offered by the Twins seems to be one of the best around and should be given more consideration then it has been. Thanks Drifty I hope to. | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| ENOUGH SIDE BY ME. WHAT DO YOU SAY DRIFTER? | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| I say Two Harbors needs a new High School and the Twins need a new ballpark! And may we all be gathered around, with cold one in hand, as they implode both of the old buildings. Drifter | ||
| Captain America | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| Amen on THHS. Two Harbors will rot to pieces around the people in the communtiy before that happens though... My $.02 worth on the staduim issue is that the State does have *some* responsibility to fork over money for stadiums. But maybe only 25-50% and certainly not the whole thing. If I was Emperor of the Universe, the state of Minnesota would be setting aside $30 million a year for new stadium construction. I would have the Vikes and Twins play out their 30-year leases at the Dome, but have the new stadiums ready to go for the following seasons. The state picks up part of the tab, and the NFL/MLB and the teams pick up the rest... | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-17-2001 |
| THAT WORKS FOR ME. SO DOES THE COLD ONE IN HAND. | ||
| Captain America | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Pretty dull day in the ol' chat room. I'm off to Vegas on Friday. Anybody got any bets they want me to place? | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Captain - You're not playing hooky today? While in Vegas, could you get me the over/under line for number of wins this coming football season for the Agates? Thanks, Drifter | ||
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Well the Mariners won! It seems the Twins and the Mariners are the two best teams in baseball. Safeco field in Seattle is a great ballpark. Each A-Rod visit to the plate was loudly booed by 35,000 and money was thrown from the upper decks to help show displeasure. A-Rod helped by committing two errors. It started to rain during the game so the roof was rolled shut. The beer was ice cold and readily avialable, which is important. Our seats though somewhat cramped were very good and offered a good view of the game. The 6 of us spent over $400 in tickets, parking, beer, food and stuff. It was a good time but never one to enjoy crowds I will continue to enjoy most future game at home. With all due respect to people of differant opinions and while I understand the need for the community to have a common rallying point. I also understand that some tax dollars must be spent to allow large projects like stadiums, airports and real-estate developments to go forward, I can see no reason for hard fought tax dollars to be spent on places for sports while our schools are falling down. Again, I hope the Twins new stadium deal works out and one day I can buy you all a cold one there. | ||
| Captain America | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| No hookey today. All three of us that were thinking about going ended up having too much work to do...so basically we're all cowards. And actually Torggy, without launching into a huge sermon, the nation's infrastructure as a whole pretty much sucks. With roads, bridges, schools, airports and mass transit all in a sorry state of affairs, where do you start??? | ||
| Kitty | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Captain, you nailed it right on the head with the comment about mass transit being in a sorry state. I wanted to go to a one-day seminar in Minneapolis for my part-time business, and round trip airfare, leaving in the a.m. and arriving back in the p.m. (duh) would have cost me $900!!!! I could fly to Paris and back for that kind of money! Needless to say I didn't want to spend the jack, and driving would have been ~6.5 hours one way. Oh well. Hey, Skipper, glad you're home...did you bring back spurs like you promised? (wink, wink) | ||
| Kitty | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
Well gang, I've got 1.5 weeks left of school, one month off, and then I start summer school. Am I nuts? Probably. Do I need an ice cold beer? Definitely! Make that 6-8 of 'em. Get out and enjoy the nice weather, eh?! ![]()
| Torggy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| You are right Captian, and with all that to be done, why start with sports stadiums? Nothing cowardly about staying to get the work done. Have a great time in Vegas. May the gambling gods smile upon you. Which huge hotel in Vegas you going to? You should make the bet that the Vikes will win the Super Bowl, this might be the year! Kitty, nuts is not doing what you want, so go for it. What is that old song? "I got spurs that jimgle jangle jingle, as I go riding merrily along". Have a good spring break | ||
| TWO-Z | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| CAPTAIN, WELL SPOKEN, OR SHOULD I SAY WRITTEN. I WOULD LIKE A $5.00 SLOT PLEASE. IF YOU WIN WE SPLIT. PAYDAY WILL BE REUNION WEEKEND. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN. TORGGY, I WILL TAKE YOU UP ON THE NEW STADIUM DEAL. KITTY, HAVE A GREAT MONTH OFF. ENJOY AND I'LL DRINK ONE AND THINK OF YOU SIPPIN ON A COLD ONE AS WELL. AS FAR AS A DULL DAY, I HAD TROUBLE GETTING IN HERE TODAY. AND YES MY PREDICTION IS THAT THE VIKINGS WILL INDEED WIN THE SUPERBOWL (SOMEDAY) HOPEFULLY JANUARY 2002. WELCOME BACK SKIP! | ||
| Drifter | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Torggy - Sounds like you all had fun at the game. Miss Kitty wants to see Skipper in spurs? Sounds kinky. Gorgeous day today -- just got inside from raking the yard and playing kickball with the neighborhood kids. I'm sweating like Roger Ebert. | ||
| Skipper | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Kitty, enjoy your time off, if you are talking about the Lonestar beer, yes I have it ready for the spring trip, I must say I am a little apprehensive serving it to this bunch with the picky palates, the reason I say this is you know how when you go to the jar store and the beer goes from left to right with the beer on the right progressively worse? well Lonestar had one brand to its right and one only, that pleasing beverage was Meister Brau! so yes we will be taking part with swill one step up from Meister Brau.....has anyone seen that Mountain Dew commercial with the guy who butts heads with the ram? that is a great commercial.... | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-18-2001 |
| Allow me to contribute my 2 cents worth on the stadium issue, money I raised without raising taxes. Actually, I stole it out of my son's change cup. Anyway, the Twins' recent stadium plan sounds plausible to me, although I'm not exactly a financial wizard. At this point, being a pragmatist, I'm at the point where I feel there HAS to be a plan that's acceptable. I'm puzzled as to why the latest bill has been tabled, but I'm still convinced it can get done. The City of San Francisco did, and Pac Bell looks great. I would suggest checking out the Web to see the financing. I heartily agree that schools, roads, bridges can and should take precedence over a stadium. Ask yourself this: Have the Twin Cities/Legislature made any major commitment to the infrastructure in the absence of a stadium bill? I don't think so. Given the reluctance of communities anywhere to spend money on schools, for example, it doesn't automatically follow that funds devoted to a downtown improvement like a stadium take dollars from other projects. Having said all that, I believe sports fans in Minnesota have every reason to be tired of the ransom game played by pro sports. The Pohlads can do more, financially and otherwise, to see that a new stadium is built. If it means selling the club to someone who is committed to the state and its fans, so be it. Sorry for taking so much space. I need a beer, Lone Star, Swill or whatever. | ||
| Captain America | Re: CARRY ON | 04-19-2001 |
| Well, here I go on my soap box... I'm a structural engineer. The American Society of Civil Engineers just released a "Report Card on the Nation's Infrastructure." This included, schools, highways, dams, mass transit, airports, navigable waterways, wastewater, solid waste...etc...about 10-12 categories. The nation got a D+ overall composite grade. We would need to spend $1.5 trillion over the next 5-10 years to meet the infrastructure needs of the nation. But instead, Dubya is giving a huge tax cut to his wealthiest friends and campaign contributors. I think that pro sports bring money (tax revenue) into the economy overall, so spending money on stadiums would eventually provide money for other civic improvements...not $1.5 trillion, but you get the idea... I'll get off the soap box now. Next! | ||
| The.White.Chevy | Re: CARRY ON | 04-19-2001 |
| Cap, maybe you can answer a question that occured to me while thinking about stadiums, roads, etc. Does the Federal Government only pay attention to national infrastructure problems in times of national emergency? If I remember correctly, defense considerations had a lot to do with builidng our present system of interstate highways. And as for you, Torggy, I'm glad you had a chance to give A-Rod the treatment he so richly (no pun intended) deserves. Did you happen to ask him about my suggestion that he should buy one case of beer per week for every eligble drinker in the country? Or was he too busy ducking Monopoly money? I also see that Twins fans are buying up left field seats for the first Yankee series in anticpation of heckling Knoblauch. I just hope they don't throw anything at him. After all, Knobby can't defend himself by throwing it back! | ||
| webman | Re: CARRY ON | 04-19-2001 |
| Captain, I am pretty sure I have you identified correctly, but I am trying to think of a question to ask you that won't give you away to anyone else. How about this one. Is your Dad an Iron Range native who's father's name was Tom? (I hope I remembered that right). Or how about this one. . . . Did you have an aunt that lived in a stucco house next door to "Grandfat"?) Or maybe this one . . . Remember the Kordaire's? If I am totally off base, sorry. I hope you have great luck in Las Vegas. Kitty, Enjoy the vacation and keep on doing what you need to do to wind up with a career you actually want. It will be worth it. I went back to college as an adult and I am sure glad I did. Now go ahead, treat yourself to a beverage of your choice and send the bill to Skipper. Drifter, That sweating like Roger Ebert thing is scaring me. Skipper, Glad you are back from Texas. I lived their for a couple of years in the early 80's. I really liked it, but looking back, I don't know how I survived the heat. I worked outside year round. 105-115 degrees in the summer and the coldest feeling 10 degrees I have ever felt in the winter. I guess it probably helped that I drank Coors by the gallon. I guess I'll quit. This is looking like a novel. Later . . . | ||
| Fred | Re: CARRY ON | 04-19-2001 |
| Captain-have a great time in Vegas. Put a dollar on black 8 in roulette for me. If I lose, let me try to win it back on the golf course. Drifter-I about spit when I read the sweating like Roger Ebert comment..that was funny! Stadium Issue-each opinion I read seemed valid, so I guess there isn't one best answer. I think a little cooperation can go a long way. School Issue-even though most people agree we need a new school, no one wants to pay for it. The people who would be paying the most for it aren't even the voters on the issue. Sometimes you have to love the way our system works. | ||
