Before the second coming obliterated the previous messages, there was an interesting discussion concerning Agate athletics. (Or the lack of Agate athletics!!) What are the opinions out there? Is there any chance to recover our once proud position in the athletic world? Will we be doormats forever? There is no hope on the horizon. What can be done?

I will be willing to come back to town and rescue the basketball program. Is Pug Norlander still available to be my assistant coach? I certainly hope so. He could diagram as good a triangle offense as I've ever seen. Lute

Pug Norlander doesn't know a triangle from a straight line. We need special help to right the Agate ship. Maybe Lyle Northey could be lured out of retirement.

THE THHS BASKETBALL TEAM IN 1986 WAS THE LAST CHANCE FOR GLORY. WITH SANDO GONE, WHAT IS MISSING IS A GREAT COACH AND THE LUCK OF HAVING THREE GREAT PLAYERS COME UP TOGETHER.

What we need is some school spirit and pride. The parents do not care about anything around here. The "athletes" don't care about anything except their new cars and where the next party will be. I honestly think that Two Harbors should consider dropping football, hockey, and track.

Keep track and field!! I built the foundation for the tradition of greatness that still rides high in that program. Who knows how much better those thinclads would be if they were running on a real track. That cinder bed which circles Halsted Field is far outdated. If you don't turn an ankle in the ruts, you are sure to trip over the grass growing on it. Get with the times, people!! Onstad

Realist email icqRe: Two Harbors Athletics11-13-1999
School spirit doesn't help you when you are 40 and your cholesterol is just about equal with the national debt. Quit wasting money on a few loosers playing games. Invest in a decent gym (weights/cardio) so fittness skills can be taught to everyone.

Sounds like the previous author is on his way out and regretting not doing the so called "fittness skills" himself. I learned more playing sports at THHS than I ever did from teachers such as: Zob, Fog, Bear, and Gomer. I did, however, learn some great badminton techniques from Bear that I still use today. I am the envy of my cul-de-sac.

You gentlemen seem to think only on male terms. Look around you, the girls programs are terrific. The vollyball team went to state last year!! The Swim Team consistantly sends swimmers to state. The BB Program is good, and untill just a few hears ago, the Girls track program never failed to send runners to the state compitition. Quit thinking with your (members), and just looke at the better sex. Girls rule.

Excellent point, Coach T. One more thing to Realist -- it appears you retained little from your High School English classes. Should THHS quit spending money in that area as well? Drifter

I agree that girls rule. Cut all boys sports that cannot post a winning record. Those boys can begin "life sport training".

I still get a big laugh out of Pickle Mealey peeking through the hole in the boys potty room. The ladies were on the other side. Pickle was not a very good athlete, but very cunning.

Thorvald email icqRe: Two Harbors Athletics11-16-1999
Actually Ivan, I'm very much in. In spite of being taught to avoid programmed exercise by poor teachers like Halstead and and the Bear, I was saved by the Army 25 years ago. Most of my clients (I'm a personal trainer) weren't that fortunate. High school athletic departments (male and female) are nothing more than edu-tainment meant to keep the inmates occupied and live out the pipe dreams of failed jock teachers and townies. But I shouldn't complain. I make a good living as a result of our spectator society. Too bad most people realize too late.

Bigdog email icqRe: Two Harbors Athletics11-16-1999
This place sure is interesting. What are the girls doing different through the years then the boys? Is it the youth and middle school programs or the high school coaching? The youth hockey teams always seem to do well but the high school team doesn't. The Grand Marais and Silver Bay boys teams have seemed to right way to do things, the Two Harbors boys should be able to also. To the so called realist or thorvald. If you required saving and the army was able to do it, you must have been an inmate or the typical unmotivated burnout in high school. No teacher at Two Harbors ever taught me to avoid exercise, quite the opposite. You are right about the mainly spectator society, but it not high school teachers or athletics fault. There are allot of other things at work.

Thorvald sounds like my kinda guy. I believe that organized sport is a crutch and only for the benefit of weak minded people. I, like Thorvald, make a good living and am extremely well fit. But it was the Navy Seals that saved me, not the Amry. Yah, baby!! Jesse V.

Big Bopper email icqRe: Two Harbors Athletics11-17-1999
I think organized athletics are wonderful. The term extra-curricular is certainly wrong! I believe that activities have just as much a place in the curriculum as any subject taught. Can we say that art is more valuable than girls swimming? Can we say that history is more valuable than boys basketball? No! Both have valuable places in a young person's development. As for this army BS, that is just what it is! As far as I am concerned, the army should be banned!!!

I am in need of a personal trainer. Must currently be making a good living, despite inferior High School education. Chip on shoulder and past Army experience a plus. To apply, stop by the Legion. Ask for Otmar.

I used to hate it when I would be lounging around in my gym gear, watching the cheerleaders or gymnastics team practice, and some weirdo with latent (or not) homosexual tendencies would pull my shorts to the floor. On the bright side, I do think the girls enjoyed the fine view of me in just a jockstrap and t-shirt.

I remember when I was on the swim team and we would have "shaving parties"; we would shave each others crotches and asses. Imagine what else happened especially on a Friday night drinking at one of the team members houses. Our hormones were out of control. It was actually a turn on. Oh high school memories.
