One of my favorite parts of the old News-Chronicle Guestbook (before they ruined it) was when writers would describe their most fond memories of Two Harbors. I think we all are proud of this slice of God's Country that we either once, or currently do, call home. I remember growing up in the 70s with boot-cut jeans and hair combed straight down. I remember playing baseball in the vacant lot on 2nd avenue. I remember riding my bike from 12th Avenue to 1st Avenue and experiencing a temperature change of some 15 degrees. I remember cruising down the High School Hill in December, out of control on a cardboard box. I remember putting up with Bear Kryshiak in gym class. I remember Driver's Ed with Ray Kortuem. I remember filling the tank with regular gasoline and beating loops. I remember Mister Greenjeans. No, he was not Ted Nugent's dad... I remember the Oasis, later the Sidetrack. I remember Cudda's Pizza. I remember 8-Tracks and Power Boosters. I remember Halsted Field before the hump, and after the hump. I remember. Do you??? Then let's hear about it!! The Drifter

Thorvald email icqRe: TH Memories11-11-1999
The comic book rack at Falks drugstore. The pin-ball machine at Northlands. French fries from Ship's Galley. The Christmas lunch at the Harbor Bar, where if you were a kid and a pool player, Culley would still let you have pickled herring and fish balls. Twelve cent malts at Bob's Drive-Inn. Delivering groceries for the Co-op grocery store in the Dodge pick-up. Shooting rats off frozen sewage piles at the dump. It's a good place to be from.

Greg Repensky email icqRe: TH Memories11-11-1999
I remember lifting the TH baseball program to new heights, my players would gallantly try to navigate the gale force winds off the big lake to snare down many potential round trippers, my only complaint was Bob Wilson blowing out all the elastic in our uniforms!Greg

Skipper email icqRe: TH Memories11-11-1999
I can think of no finer pizza still then the old "Sidetrack", remember going in there after many local sporting events and finding the place packed?, some folk singer slinging his ware on the stage, the best though my friends was the fried cheese balls, honestly, couldn't you go for one of those right now? Skipper

Postman email icqRe: TH Memories11-11-1999
You must admit, growing up in the '70's in good old TH was fun, we can only hope our kids have as much fun(and good Sense)as we did!

Curious email icqRe: TH Memories11-11-1999
Does Tom Smith still serve on the City Council up there? Does he still wear those tight pants?

Whoopie John email icqRe: TH Memories11-11-1999
I can remember steam locomotives in the railway yard. Lute Olson lived in the upstairs apartment of a house behind the high school. Ed Nauha was president of the bank. Alfred Sonju had a crew cut. The golf club house was a log cabin. The skating rink was in the middle of Hardee's parking lot. The high school hill was much steeper then. I believe the football field was lighted with 40 watt bulbs. The VFW Club was in the middle of the 700 block on 7th Avenue. There was no swimming pool on the end of the high school. Fred Ojala was principal of the school. Bill House was showing filmstrips of the "Wheat Harvest of 1929". The jail consisted of two rooms behind the old City Hall.

Boyd email icqRe: TH Memories11-12-1999
I remember nothing!

S. Onstad email icqRe: TH Memories11-12-1999
My memories of Two Harbors are all awful. Kids calling me chrome dome. Kids chanting "Onzie and Harriet!!" at me. No respect. Never getting laid. All bad memories. S. Onstad

P Carlson email icqRe: TH Memories11-12-1999
Remember the Teen-Age Center with Mrs. Croke as chaperone. Cruising the loop. Country dances at Silver Creek and Felix. Parties at Willow's shack up on the Drummond Line.Bill Flygare, Bill House, John Evans, O R Hill as High School Principal. The hospital on First Avenue. Playing football or baseball after school down at the depot. Steaming ore at night and going to school during the day.Two movie theaters in town, the Harbor and the State. Delivering groceries for Himie at the People's Market or for Kedar Puent at the Marine Market. Cy Magnusson was the best teacher that Two Harbors ever had. I remember as a kid during the 40's, leaving home at 8:30 AM on our bikes and not coming back home until 5:00 or 6:00 PM. Probably playing in Skunk Woods or at the Duck Pond. Swimming at Gooseberry. The only way to get there was to hitchike!! The only place to hang out was at Doulas' Pool Hall. Whatever happened to old Frank? I could go on for hours!!!

WoodChuck email icqRe: TH Memories11-12-1999
Old Walt Gertzen at the Dixie. Les Havelik at Big Noise (where you could take a sauna for $1.00). The New Life Cafe. The best pizza this town ever had was made at the Paramount, run by Neil Constans. The best teacher this town ever saw was Mary Jane Smith. And what about Bert Whiting, old chemistry teacher? Oscar's Lunch invented the steak sandwich. Does anyone remember Boomer's Beer Joint up the State Road? Dick Carter was one fine history teacher. Russell Anderson (the original Chrome Dome) was one poor principal. Anyone play poker at Smokey's Tavern? Anyone remember the Silver Dollar Saloon?

Drifter email icqRe: TH Memories11-13-1999

Dan G. email icqRe: TH Memories11-13-1999

Thorvald email icqRe: TH Memories11-13-1999
Being in the first class Ozzie taught at the John A (3rd grade). The warped wooden floor in the James Drug. The "Class of '69" painted atop the coal docks. Sheriff Falk's gun training class. Is this the cure or cause of Alzheimer's?

Skogs email icqRe: TH Memories11-13-1999
I remember parking at the breakwater, beating loops, hanging at the sidetrack and many fond memories. In fact I think I remember having a crome dome Onstead as a teacher, in fact he was a pretty witty guy, but it really comes as no suprise that he didn't get lucky during that era... Cool Board.... Skogs

Postman email icqRe: TH Memories11-13-1999
I remember the weekly caravan of vehicles motoring to "Souptown" on the weekends, many a well intentioned pick up lines were put forth by the Agate youth!

Skipper email icqRe: TH Memories11-13-1999
Remember when the Thomas Lake fishing contest would be held for all the winter time anglers?, that was a very good excuse for the fella's to escape the missus and and partake in Black berry brandy like nobody's business!...did anyone actually fish on that sacred day? Skipper

P Carlson email icqRe: TH Memories11-14-1999
Boomer's beer joint up #2, just south of Big Noise, was quite the place. We all got pretty well tanked up, and then go for an airpane ride with Boomer.

Does anyone remember the Viking Club up by Castle Danger? You could get served if you could get up on a barstool. Same with the old Wonderland. The best place to buy beer when we were kids was from Lars Svee. Back in those days it seemed like there was a country dance every Saturday night. All the old folks would go and polka.

Lots of good stores were downtown that are now closed. At one time there were 3 mens clothing stores in town, Nelson Bros, Robert's and the Man's Store. Remember the Scananavian Store, beter known as The Scand. The only department store that Two Harbors ever had. They sold groceries, hardware, dry goods, women's clothing and men's clothing. I think at one time there were about 10 different grocery stores in Two Harbors.

minnie email icqRe: TH Memories11-15-1999
Playing in the old houses on 1st avenue before they were torn down and the Bayshore Apts were built, also the old fishing shacks. The police often showed up to chase us away which increased the fun. Throwing water balloons from the tops of the downtown buildings before they removed the access. I love TH and hope to be able to come home again. Taxes there are way too high right now.

Bigdog email icqRe: TH Memories11-16-1999
Hey Onz, you must have some good memories. I remember having allot of fun in your classes. It does really suck that you weren't getting laid though. Hope things have changed for ya...Moving Q-balls rambler all over town everyday was always fun because the doors wouldn't lock. He could never find it after practice...

Ivan email icqRe: TH Memories11-16-1999
Locker Room Memories: Flushing all the toilets when the team was taking a shower. One time I believe Randy Bigelow got 3rd degree burns. Randy always had sensitive skin though. Watching Rudy Rodvold put the fire out after someone put ben gay in his jock. Marty Boulanger pinching everyone's ass. Bart Wick, "Scrape your leg!" Pat Mealy, "If you're sick go to the doctor!" Doug Norlander getting a bloody nose while pinching one off. Q-Ball's infamous finger in towel incident. Wondering of Mitchy would ever go through puberty.

Anyone remember those Saturday trips to Grand Marais to play 7th and 8th basketball (with coach Boyd)? Throwing french fries around the cafeteria? Throwing books out the school windows? Spraying pop in lockers? Writing "Chuck Sucks" on the washroom walls? Stomping out a large obcene sign in the football field snow? Spilling the alcohol burners in 9th science? Getting thrown through the door in Mr. Norlander's room(with the door closed)? Distilling alcohol? Peanut brittle?

I still think that Young Andrew Seckinger had something to do with that graffiti on the bus garage. Joe admitted that he did it, but to this day, that sneaky Clover Valley youth is still a suspect.

Oh Yeah!!! email icqRe: TH Memories11-18-1999
Way to funny.I remember baseball on 2nd ave,Stan Lujan hitting the house across the alley, also did the High School hill but we used milk cartons, the wax side was great. I remember Hash jeans w/ the star on the pocket, Fleabag Anderson wore them till the mid-eighties

. Who remembers the pep-fest that Rip rode Ray Kortuem? Who remembers TJ Swan, Ripple, Snowshoe Grog, Bonesfarm.

School Historian email icqRe: TH Memories11-18-1999
Remember the Class of 1992-nobody qualified as Valedictorian. The Class of 1980 was known for lack of good looks. The Class of 1977-most of the class pictures were X-rated. The Class of 1984-known as the 40 Watt class. Does anyone have any ideas as to the brightest and the dimmest classes to pass through Two Harbors High School?

I too played baseball on 2nd ave. I remember sitting on the steps and contemplating life. Remember a short girl with long flowing black hair? Not me of course, but I remember the delightful laugh and the twinkle of her eyes.

Drifter email icqRe: TH Memories11-30-1999
It was always a bummer when the ball would get past the catcher and end up bouncing down the steps and into the street. While back in town for Thanskgiving, I drove past the vacant lot, and it's got fences running all through the middle of it. What's up with that? Does the city still own this lot? Drifter

Postman email icqRe: TH Memories12-04-1999
Drifter, don't blame the city for your suspect battery skills!

Drifter email icqRe: TH Memories12-08-1999
I must admit, I was no George Mitterwald.

coach T email icqRe: TH Memories12-17-1999
I'll never forget the bus ride with the 72 boys swim team. I'm not quite sure how many jockie briefs were left in the streets of duluth. It was fun!

anon email icqRe: TH Memories01-02-2000
What about Wayno "Buck" threatening, "Knock it off before I run your hand through the joiner!" He was somewhat serious.

The 4th of July fireworks down on the rocks at the point was always good too.

What about Miss Shaw. She could make two kids on opposite sides of the room cry at once.

And the after hours parties at the Sidetrack...they always were way out of hand and should not be discussed. Is John still around?

webman email icqRe: TH Memories01-03-2000
I had Miss Shaw in 5th grade at the John A. Johnson School. You are right about her ability to make 2 kids cry. I never could figure out which eye was real. She told us a joke one day, and we were all too terrified to understand it. She told us all to point to our heads and spell the abbreviation for mountain. We all said "M T," she laughed her ass off. We just stared. Then she started saying, "get it? get it? empty, empty!" We didn't know if we should laugh or not. It was really weird.

And Wayne Leopold... He would come around during drafting class and look at our work. You could have the neatest looking stuff in class and he would spray spit all over it, then kind or wipe it off with his shirt sleeve and smear the pencil lines and then would tell you that your work was kind of messy, and you should be neater. What a guy.

As for the Sidetrack and John. I was usually too innebriated, too early to manage any after hours parties. I have lost track of John.

And I must say that there was no finer event in the world than fireworks on the 4th of July in the mid-seventies to mid-eighties.

Does anyone remember the tugboat race on the 4th in 1976? Old Edna blew the new diesel away. It was very cool!

Drifter email icqRe: TH Memories01-05-2000
Yah, Wayno was something else. The huge hands...the cold stare...and of course his constant denial of students who would ask for permission to go to the bathroom. "Tie a string around it!!" "Put a rubber band around it!!" "Put a paper clip on it!!" I learned very early in my freshman year to empty by bladder before entering wood shop class. The Drifter

skogs email icqRe: TH Memories01-05-2000

Remember when the Minnehaha would take a group of kids skiing every once in awhile, I had the pleasure of riding on the chairlift with "Gomer" Shields, after talking to him for awhile I noticed he was wearing SHOP GOGGLES for ski goggles, now I am not sure but I don't think you could cruise the ski bunnies with those on, just thought you might like that story of your former shop teacher.
