There can only be one way to feel about a NEW high school in Two Harbors. Let's go for it!! The old place is used up. 60 years is all it could last. Our athletic facilities are shameful. Our kids deserve the same opportunities that surrounding towns give their kids. Check with Esko, Cloquet, Hermantown, Duluth, Grand Marais, Hibbing, Virginia, Moose Lake, Proctor, etc., etc. They all have either built new schools, upgraded their schools, or improved athletic facilities in the past few years. Are our kids to be left out? This is an easy decision!

My kids are out of school, so this has nothing to do with personal gain. I think it is unbelievable that the people of Two Harbors would not strongly support educational facilities. Have vision! Think of businesses that would not consider relocated in Two Harbors unless the educational opportunities are available. Think of the future of the students of this area. The tax increase per year equals the cost of one weekend in a hotel in the Cities. It is time we stepped up and supported a future for our area!

Some things to ponder: We subsidize adults on our golf course with tax money. We subsidize LP and Invisible Ink up at the Mike Valentine Memorial Business Center with tax money. We subsidize affluent citizens at the adult workshop with our tax money. But some adults complain that a new high school would cost tax money. We must think of our future. We must think of what is most important in our area. Support a new school!!

I am amazed that the mentality of this whole subject...sure we need a new school....but who really believes that we need a new school in order to better educate???? If the teachers are doing their jobs(?) and the kids have the right attitude about learning do they need a bigger, fancy building in order to learn more. I think not. I am in favor of a new school, not because our children will have a better education..unless the take away tenure and get rid of the old and open our new school with fresh faces on the staff. We may as well build a new school now and get it over with before it costs the tax payers of Lake County another 2 to 4 million dollars.

We need a new school. We need more teachers. We need new administration. We need a new school board. We need, we need, we need. Unfortunatley, our incapable superintendent's contract was just renewed by our incapable school board. And as a bonus, they voted Mr. Avalsgaurd a 10% pay increase. Guess we have money somewhere. But not for the kids. Vote yes!!!!!

The previous "writer" is a wonderful example of the need for new educational facilities in the area. In his case, these facilities are needed immediately. Not a word about the needs of our young people. Just personal diatribes and rumor. Our young people are our future. Without first-class educational facilities, a community dies. No industry. No jobs. People tend to move to other areas. Vote YES for the kids! Vote YES for the community! Rumor and innuendo have NO place in this discussion.

The Drifter has long since drifted away from Two Harbors, but is definitely in favor of a new school. Since moving away, I have supported new schools in two different communities that I have resided in. Yes, my property taxes have slightly increased each time, but of all the taxes I pay, I feel this one is well worth the dollar spent. A new High School in TH is inevitable. For God's sake, it's over 60 years old and it was falling apart many years ago when I was there. The more you people put this off, the more expensive it will be for you down the road. And who knows when interest rates will go up, increasing the price tag even further. For those of you that have the opportunity to vote -- USE IT!! Get educated on this now. And when it comes time to cast your vote on election day, think about the future of the kids and the future of your city. Drifter

TO Gigi:

You are wrong, regarding the Superintendent's contract. He most certainly did not recieve a

10% pay increase. He can't negotiate his contract until June 30, 2000. You really need to check your facts

before printing them.

I agree with Drifter, the school being replaced should not even be an issue worth discussing, you have to move forward, no one wants to pay higher taxes but sometimes it is necessary, modern technology in the classroom can only enhance the child's learning ability....Skipper

How frustrating and depressing it must be to live in Two Harbors these days..especially for the young people. The number one priority for the kids has to be to get through school and get the hell out. Who could blame them? Eventually TH will cease to exist, erased from the maps. Much deserved credit should be given to all those that voted No. Losers, each and every one of you.

It really is a shame. I was shocked by the margin of no's to yes's. People back home don't have their priorities straight. Now what? The school is still falling apart. That hasn't changed.

Yes it is a shame. The school has held up well, all things considered, but it really is time for a new one. The building, the location, the athletic facilities, the bandroom down the Tunnel, all have served their time. Since the good folk of TH seem to have an affinity for taxes to support everything, I'm puzzled as to why this one didn't pass.

You all know me email icqRe: NEW SCHOOL IN TH?12-15-1999
I no longer live in Two Harbors, and today, I'm not so disappointed to admit it. I've been reading these responses--and am aware of the final outcome of the vote, and have to say that I am extremely disappointed, but not completely surprised. The narrow-mindedness, and selfishness, of those who voted "no" shouldn’t be all that surprising to anyone who has spent much time in Lake County.

There are hundreds of reasons to have voted "yes" for this referendum—to spend the time detailing each of them is pointless because, of course, those who voted against it, simply wouldn’t understand anyway—or they are so damn selfish, that they will look for any possible excuse to vote "no." But they won’t stand up and simply say, "I’m just too cheap!" Therefore, they’ll just throw some irrational excuse at you—unknowingly displaying not only that they are selfish, but also dim.

I’d love to see the demographic data of the people who voted against the school. Educated? I doubt it. Ever lived outside Two Harbors? I doubt it. Independent thinkers? I doubt it—they find it easier to latch onto a nonsensical comment made by someone else, than to think the issues through themselves. Perform manual labor for a living? Probably. Drive an Expedition, have three snowmobiles, two boats, and a cabin? Probably--all the toys for them but screw everyone else. Donate to charity? Of course not. And I would really love to know how many parents of school-going children voted against the referendum—how exactly did they stand in the balloting booth & rationalize to themselves that they were doing the right thing?

How??

Therein lies the real problem. The people who can’t see the merits of building a new school are the very people who could have benefited from a better education themselves. But they are too ignorant to understand that because of their own lack of commitment to education. If there’s one thing I’ve learned during my years in the workplace it is this--there are very few things more important in life than a good education. I received one and I am lucky for that. But then I wasn’t force to share my books with other students because money had to be diverted to ensuring that the school’s walls wouldn’t collapse.

Commendations are warranted to those who worked—and voted, for the referendum. I’m sure Gordie Klein and the other committee members did a great job. This (Gordie Klein) is a man of integrity—a man who has dedicated his entire life towards our community and education--and some of you have the gall, and ignorance, to sit around the bar, or coffee shop, questioning the integrity of the plans they put forth as if they were out to undermine the future of Lake County! Could you have some minor differences with the committee’s work? Sure. But to discount all of it for whatever ridiculous reason you put forth is laughable. They didn’t put together their plans in the three weeks prior to the election—but, of course, Cindy Kosiak, and her adoring weasels did just that. She organizes her opposition campaign beginning in mid November? This is just further evidence of which side didn’t put much thought into the real issues.

In a sense, I feel bad. Two Harbors was a great place to grow up in the 60’s and 70’s but it’s not the same any more. It used to be a town where community, achievement, and participation meant something. Not any more. When you drive through town and notice the run-down conditions of the homes and businesses, it makes it easier to understand the "no" vote—people just don’t care! How about this novel idea—why not strive to make Two Harbors the best small town in the state of Minnesota? Improve the schools. Enhance the waterfront. Reinvigorate the downtown. Do something to enhance the dumpy 7th Avenue (main street). Make it a place people will never forget when they pass through. Make it a place where people will want to raise their children.. A healthy, vibrant Two Harbors would benefit everyone in Lake County. A new railroad overpass is NOT enough folks! But it takes some vision, intelligence, commitment, hard work, and, well, maybe even a bit of unselfishness to pull it all off.

Judging from the vote, it seems that these qualities are, sadly, in the minority up there.

Bummer.

webman email icqRe: NEW SCHOOL IN TH?12-15-1999
Great posting You all know me too . . . When I left Two Harbors several years ago, there were several reasons, one of the most important ones was the quality of education. The system was failing in education my children. Oh, it wasn't that the teachers didn't care, or that they were incompetent. Actually, it was the lack of support for education and for allowing the teachers to teach.

Unbeknownst to us at the time, we landed in the highest property tax school district in our state. Allow me to elaborate. Property taxes fund our local school district, and my taxes are double those of people in some other districts. Here's the cool part; people are practically begging to get their kids into this district, property values are increasing, demand for property and housing far outstrips the supply, and we are all proud of our schools and the education our children are receiving. The student retention rate through graduation is very high, the ACT and SAT scores are high, many students attend advanced placement classes and go on to college. We even manage to have a football team that has been a strong contender for the state title for the last 5 years. Parents are involved, there are athletic boosters and band boosters, gifted and talented programs, the list goes on. All of this in a rural school district with a total enrollment of 600 (grades K-12). Oh yeah, and most of the buildings are fairly new and they are all well maintained. My long narrative could also be written by residents of school districts a lot closer to Lake County than I am. Come on T.H. get with it and support our children, help them get a good education.

Coach T email icqRe: NEW SCHOOL IN TH?12-17-1999
People in TH have no idea how lucky they are when it comes to property taxes. My house taxes increased 500% when I moved to another state. Where every little town has a school, some only with as few as 10 seniors in a class. With the mine tax keeping the tax base down, they can easily afford to build a new school. With the few that don't want TH to change, shame on them. With out change there is no growth, and with out growth there is only death.
