The Full Rack vs Half Rack reminds me that when I left the Nort Woods, everyone I met had no idea what an 8 or 16 gallon keg was. Everyone else in the world calls them 1/4 and 1/2 barrels of beer. And there is a lot of confusion as to what constitutes a pony keg. |

Good Evening All, After a few days of scrambling around. The bulletin board seems to be working ok. One of the reasons I messed around with changing hosting companies was so I could do a little more with the site. To that end, I have just finished installing a new chatroom. This one resides on my server space. It should prove to be much more reliable. How about if a bunch of us head for the chat around 9 or 10 pm tonite? We could see if there are any bugs in the thing. You do not need to register for the chatroom, BUT, if you do, no one else will be able to use your chosen name unless they know your password. Seems to me we had a little trouble with a false identity a while back and registering your nickname could eliminate that possibility. I can't believe people would not know what 8 and 16 gallon kegs were. The must have led sheltered lives. So as to the size of a pony keg. I thought it was 2.5 gallons. Anybody know for sure? |

Webby, since we didn't a chance to finish this in chat... Richardson, it seemed to me, orchestrated this. He raised the issue of the buyout, not to mention race. I'm sure he had issues there, legitmate issues. And I'm also certain that a coach who's won a national title deserves a pass if he has a bad year. Still, I think that he wanted out, and so he went on his little rant. It's sad. Anyway, I await your thoughts. |

TWC & Webman, I take it you are talking about the coach of Arkansas Razorbacks. My wife's great-nephew is playing his senior year at Arkansas State Indians. At first I thought that when they said on the news, Arkansas coach that it was his coach. Then I heard later referred to as Razorbacks, so knew it wasn't his coach. I know that there a number of Arkansas teams. The Indians also finished the season at about 50%. They are now playing in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Having heard the results yet. |

The b-ball coach at ASU is none other than Dickey Nutt, one of the brothers of Houston Nutt, the head football coach at the University of Arkansas. The fans and the folks at UA LOVE Houston Nutt. It would not surprise anyone to see Dickey end up in Fayettevill someday too. |

Wow! Bummer, Miss Priest died. Thanks for the info Tailspin. After reading the obit I see that she was 96 and had taught for 22 years before getting to John A. Wow! Who'd a thunk! I thought she came with the building. Many times she took her stick to my bottom. Maybe there should be more like her in todays educational system. She did get your attention, and your respect. Wonder why she never married? |

I think I posted a while back about my last visit with Miss Priest. But in honor of her passing I will do so again. Miss Priest lived next-door to my great-grandparents on 4th Avenue, so she knew my whole family. When great-grandpa would get a little irritated, he would tell great-grandma that he was going to, "Take a divorce and marry the red-headed schoolteacher." I don't think great-grandma was too worried about it. When I was in TH last summer, I was at the nursing home to see my grandma and I saw Miss Priest sitting in the hallway in her wheelchair. My grandma had told me that Miss Priest had Alzheimer's pretty bad and that she did not know much of anything anymore. Nonetheless, I wanted to spend a few minutes with her. I squatted down next to her and told her who I was, she reached out to hold my hand. She said that of course she know who I was and that she was very glad to see me. She patted my cheek and told me that I turned out real nice and that I was very pretty. She thanked me for stopping to see her. Seemed fairly lucid to me. She was right. I am very pretty. I am glad I was able to spend a few minutes with her. |

Reality is only an illusion that occurs due to a lack of alcohol." 1)Historians speculate that prehistoric nomads may have made beer from grain & water before learning to make bread. 2)Beer became ingrained in the culture of civilizations with no significant viticulture. 3)Noah's provisions included beer on the Ark. 4)4300 BC, Babylonian clay tablets detail recipes for beer. 5)Beer was a vital part of civilization and the Babylonian, Assyrian, Egyptian, Hebrew, Chinese, and Inca cultures. 6)Babylonians produced beer in large quantities with around 20 varieties. 7)Beer at this time was so valued that it was sometimes used to pay workers as part of their daily wages. 8)Early cultures often drank beer through straws to avoid grain hulls left in the beverage. 9)Egyptians brewed beer commercially for use by royalty served in gold goblets, medical purposes, and as a necessity to be included in burial provisions for the journey to the hereafter. |

Different grains were used in different cultures: a) Africa used millet, maize and cassava. b) North America used persimmon although agave was used in Mexico. c) South America used corn although sweet potatoes were used in Brazil. d) Japan used rice to make sake. e) China used wheat to make samshu. f) Other Asian cultures used sorghum. g) Russians used rye to make quass or kvass. h) Egyptians used barley and may have cultivated it strictly for brewing as it made poor bread. 1600 BC Egyptian texts contain 100 medical prescriptions calling for beer. If an Egyptian gentleman offered a lady a sip of his beer they were betrothed. Early brewers used herbals like balsam, hay, dandelion, mint, and wormwood seeds, horehound juice, and even crab claws & oyster shells for flavorings. Romans brewed "cerevisia" (Ceres the goddess of agriculture & vis meaning strength in Latin). 55 BC Roman legions introduce beer to Northern Europe. 49 BC Caesar toasted his troops after crossing the Rubicon, which began the Roman Civil War. Before the Middle Ages brewing was left to women to make since it was considered a food as well as celebration drink. 23 BC Chinese brewed beer called "kiu" 500-1000 AD the first half of the Middle Ages, brewing begins to be practiced in Europe, shifting from family tradition to centralized production in monasteries and convents (hospitality for traveling pilgrims). During Medieval times beer was used for tithing, trading, payment and taxing. 1000 AD hops begins to be used in the brewing process. 1200 AD beer making is firmly established as a commercial enterprise in Germany, Austria, and England. a) German's preferred cold temperature lagers (bottom-fermentation) stored in caves in the Alps. b) English preferred mild temperature ales (top-fermentation) stored in cellars. 1295 King Wenceslas grants Pilsen Bohemia brewing rights (formerly Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia & Czech Republic). 1420 German brewers develop the lager method of brewing. 1489 Germany's first brewing guild, Brauerei Beck, was established. 1490's Columbus found Indians making beer from corn and black birch sap. |

OK, I am getting tired of f*#%&%g around with the chatroom and the web hosting company. The chatroom generates a huge access log because of the frequent "refresh" necessary to operate the thing. The host co. does not seem to want to clear out my access logs often enough, so I am going over my 30 mb limit. When this happens, it costs $$$. To avoid this, I am TEMPORARILY shutting down our nice, new chatroom. I put a link in for the original room, but that one is shut down for a few days too, because of a virus attack. Can't win for losin'. I will be looking for another hosting company. I will be sure to get enough server space this time. You should not notice any inconvenience or interruption except with the chatroom. Thanks again for your patience. |

Renaissance History 1516 Bavarian brewing guilds push for the Reinheitsgeobot purity laws make it illegal to use any ingredients but water, barley, and hops in the brewing of beer (they didn't know yeast existed). 1553 Beck's Brewery founded & still brewing today. Late 1500's Queen Elizabeth I of England drank strong ale for breakfast. 1587 the first beer brewed in New World at Sir Walter Raleigh's colony in Virginia--but the colonists sent requests to England for better beer. 1602 Dr. Alexander Nowell discovers that ale can be stored longer in cork sealed, glass bottles. 1612 the first commercial brewery opened in New Amsterdam (NYC, Manhattan) after colonists advertised in London newspapers for experienced brewers. 1620 Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock because the beer supplies were running low. 1674 Harvard College has its own brewhouse. 1680 William Penn (founder of Pennsylvania) operated commercial brewery. 1757 Washington wrote his personal recipe "To Make Small Beer." 1786 Molson brewery is founded in what is today Canada. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had their own private brewhouses. Samuel Adams operated commercial brewery. Soldiers in the revolutionary army received rations of a quart of beer a day. 1789 James Madison proposes that Congress levy a low 8-cent duty per barrel on malt liquors to encourage "the manufacture of beer in every State in the Union." Beer and bread were the mainstays of the ordinary person's diet for centuries. Yeasts during this time were exactly the same as those used in bread. |

Modern History Before the 1800's most beer was really "Ale." 1810 Munich establishes Oktoberfest as an official celebration. 1830's Bavarians Gabriel Sedlmayr of Munich and Anton Dreher of Vienna developed the lager method of beer production. 1842 the first golden lager is produced in Pilsen, Bohemia. In the mid-19th Century (1850's) German immigrant brewers introduced cold maturation lagers to the US (Anheuser-Busch, Miller, Coors, Stroh, Schlitz, and Pabst roots begin here). The modern era of brewing in the US began in the late 1800's with commercial refrigeration (1860), automatic bottling, pasteurization (1876), and railroad distribution. 1870's Adolphus Busch pioneers the use of double-walled railcars, a network of icehouses to make Budweiser the first national brand. 1876 Pasteur unraveled the secrets of yeast in the fermentation process, and he also developed pasteurization to stabilize beers 22 years before the process was applied to milk. 1880 there are approximately 2,300 breweries in the US. 1890s Pabst is the first US brewer to sell over 1 million barrels in a year. 1909 Teddy Roosevelt brought over 500 gal. of beer on safari in Africa. 1914 commercial competition drives the number of operating breweries down to 1,400. 1933 Prohibition ends for beer (April 7). 1935 only 160 breweries survive Prohibition. 1935 the beer can is introduced (American Can Co. & Kreuger Brewing). 1938 Elise Miller John heads Miller Brewing for 8 years as the first and only woman ever to run a major brewing company. 1965 Fritz Maytag purchases Anchor Brewing Co. 1966 Budweiser is the first brand to sell 10 million barrels in a year. 1976 New Albion is the first in the rebirth of brewpubs and microbreweries in the US opening in California. 1988 Asahi Super Dry (Japan) introduces new beer category (soon to follow is Michelob Dry). 1991 the US produces 20% of the world beer volume (world's largest). |

I'm Jewish, but rabbi Goldberg told me that I could eat fish on Fridays too. We Jews all have big noses and are tight with our money so I think I'll hit McDonalds after 4pm for the 99 cent fish fillet. |

To: Now a Former User, and How Pathetic, I don't know who Bill B. is, nor do I know who you two are, as none of the three of you have used a name by which you may be known to those frequenting this board. Former User, are you a silent reader, or a poster? I am generally a silent reader. Let us hear something more from you than a harumph, and a sniff, more than a shriek in horror that someone might actually be so incorrect as to make fun of a Jew. Filth? Maybe. I think it was an unsuccessful attempt at humor. You know, Swedes and Norskies eat fish and talk funny, Irish and Indians drink to much, Finns and Poles are not too bright, Blacks are good athletes or criminals, Whitey is out to screw everyone else over for a buck, Asians are good with computers, cameras, and martial arts, Arabs are terrorists riding camels or Mercedes, blah blah blah. There is not a "protected ethnicities" list. Personally, I think that, in the context of this board, a good answer to Bill's remarks if they piss you off is, "HEY BILL, YOU SUCK! YOU ARE AN UGLY ANTI-SEMITE BASTARD AND YOUR MOTHER DRESSES YOU FUNNY! Or you could really go all out and post something intelligent. Why not just take it to the poster? We didn't all post that remark. Ever hear of one bad apple? OK, I'm done with you. Oh, by the way, please come back. Seriously. How Pathetic - This is a serious matter...It is called potential Anti-Semitism. And yes, the correct term is as you stated, making fun. It's not meant (I would assume) to be taken so damn seriously by anybody. After re-reading the Bill Post, it appears to be more of a gross generalization than anti-Semitic. Haven't you ever laughed at an ethnic joke, or a blonde joke? Are blonde jokes ok? As to the other topics, Webman has done something different there. I believe that he is attempting to create a forum for those who wish to discuss those topics to do so. Maybe bring some people in that would like to talk about those things. So...if you want them discussed, tell your friends about it, and they can input whatever serious discussion of great import that they wish, and you can argue with them. Or persuade them, whichever you prefer. Not that it will make much difference. This board is for everyone. One more thing. What is sad, very sad, is coming in here and ripping everybody. Talk about gross generalization. When you post again, keep the same handle. It may be appropriate. I know mine is. To everone else: Man, I hope I don't regret this post. Maybe I should tone it down some or just keep quiet. I'll be ready for the ripping, and if an apology is in order, I will do so. Please advise. |

The easy thing to say when people get uptight about being called something is "lighten up." I agree that there are too many people out there that have a hard time laughing at themselves. People need to take themselves less seriously. That said, everyone is different. Everyone out there reading this board won't react like you do to a particular statement. My advice is to THINK before you post a message on this or any forum on the internet. You never know who might be reading this and who might be hurt by a statement YOU made. It's like the white guy saying he doesn't understand why an African American doesn't like being called the "N" word, because being called a honky doesn't bother him. Well, you aren't him..... Think about it. It's amazing how good it feels to be nice to people. If you haven't done it today, try it. |

I guess you well have to call me uncaring. I do not see what all the trouble is about here. I thought Bill Berditzman's post was funny. The politically correct crowd in an attempt to not hurt anyones feelings has driven a huge wedge between so many ethnic groups. Everyone has become so thin skinned about making fun of how they are that is has become almost impossible to get through the day anymore without stepping on someones toes. Donthaveacowman, well put. Sure would be nice to hear from you more. If this is what it takes to prod more of the watchers into posters I am all for it. Nowaformerposter, thanks for waking everyone up! Don't leave now the fun has just begun. It is funny though how you are so ready to blame Webby for something someone else has done. Why not blame Bill? You must be part of the "it's not my fault" crowd. What would you have done if Webby had censored it? It's Friday!! |

Great posts there people! Really. I sort of like it when people get their feathers ruffled a little bit. It often leads to some enlightening follow-ups. How Pathetic, You make a valid point. I added the Local Topics to give people a place to discuss matters of great import, little import, or simply mundane things that they just want to talk about without the distraction of people interrupting them with goofiness. I figured that we would probably pick up a few more active participants if a "serious" forum was offered. BUT, I hope you have paid close enough attention over the last few years to realize that interspersed with the general silliness, there is a great deal of wisdom, tolerance, insight, and caring displayed on this bulletin board. I expect the "Arbley" board to continue down its present joyous path towards absolute ruination. I would also ask that the "Local Topics" section be set aside as exempt from any and all attempts at humor. Serious business only. No ing around. Now I will close this thread and we will continue on our great journey through life. |
