has anyone ever noticed the Railroad ties that go into and out some ways, the water near and on the beach at the Breakwall? What are those from? There is some really cool stuff down there. (You know the beach where you can walk down to the water and there are a bunch of rocks and such) |

Most of those iron rails you see are the last remnants of the old fishing shacks that used to line the harbor. They used them to slide the boats in and out of the fish shacks. Those places were really a bunch of falling down health hazards, but they sure added some personality to the waterfront. |

Love the pics Torggy. I remember going down to the fish houses as a little girl with my grandfather. Unfortunately, by that time they were so run down that I only got to go into one or two as most were very unsafe... I've never felt as safe as I did then with my gramps, though. Thanks a bunch for the stroll down memory lane, Torggy. |

I loved looking at those old shacks when we went there in the summer. I would imagine what the people were like who used them and wondered if they lived there in the winter. I agree with angeldevil...thanks for the stroll torrgy! |

I would imagine what the people were like who used them and wondered if they lived there in the winter. sisg They were very good hard working fisherman who plied the lake to make a living. I remember going down there in the 40's after they had their catch of fish smoking with the best aroma in the world. My buddy and I would ask one of them if we could have a taste and they would always give us one smoke cisco each. Makes my mouth water for a cisco now. Always stop in Knife River at Kendall's when back home on vacation and have a few ciscos, a beer or two with some soda crackers. Can't wait to get back in the summer of 2005. Not sure sisg if they lived there or not, I don't think so, but I could be wrong. They stored their boats down in the lower part of the buildings and had all their nets and fish smoking stuff upstairs if I remember right. It is too bad that at least one of those old buildings couldn't have been saved and still be there today for everyone to enjoy the history of that period of time. |

I love that one pic Torg. The one with the Edna G. and the oreboat. I sure miss seeing that. When I was a kid, my folks would always take us down to the harbor to watch the tugboat push and pull those big ore boats around. We would sit there and watch by the hour. Even then, I think I had some inkling that those times were really special. Looking back now, I KNOW they were more special than words can describe. |

Easy question: Look at the pic of the train and tell me which way it is going!! Nice to see a shot of the back of the old Club House in the background as well. Used to play football with the old gang there many many years ago on Saturday afternoons. Thanks again Torggy for the trip down memory lane. One more thing Torggy, when you post a big pic like these, one now has to scroll right to left to read the posts from here on until the thread is closed out at 100. Just a thought, if you could size them down before posting. If not it is still worth the extra effort just to see these fine pics again. |

Man, after seeing those photos, I started looking around for my lunch box and my math book. I felt like I was back at the John A. Johnson. When I moved to TH in 1966, the shacks were there, of course, and the breakwater was an absolute mess. The wooden planks had been busted; a good-sized adult could fall through the gaps. It looks much better now and the lighthouse is a safer area. But I agree - something has been lost. Can't be helped, I guess. And I realize it's noise pollution, but I would love to hear the old foghorn again - maybe during Heritage Days. What a great sound it was. |

That's a hell of a picture. Believe it or not, the breakwater was in a little better shape than that in '66. If I remember right, the planks had been laid over rock. I think Skipper said it well about the breakwater in that pix above. By God, you should be a rube from the local paper, Skipper! |

The breakwater was covered in concrete in the mid-70's. I think around '73 or '74. Before that it was just rock out to about where it angles to the East, then old broken up timbers after that. I don't remember the old one looking that bad either. Judging by the angle and the view of the oredocks, I think that pic might be of one of the old fish shack docks. |

Dear Mr. Hand, It just looks like a grainy old picture to me. When I look for smoke, I look for SMOKE. Since when did one of those coal-fired steam locomotives puff smoke that was darn near invisible? The old pics of the Edna G. just sitting at the dock show obvious smoke, and when she was working, there was LOTS of smoke. I just don't see it on the train picture. I want a prize for being an argumentative bastard. How 'bout a free meal at the New Life Cafe!? |

Wow!! What happened to Minnesota nice? Riots Erupt in Minn. After Football Game MANKATO, Minn. (AP)--Police arrested dozens of students during an alcohol-fueled riot in the streets following a homecoming football game loss at Minnesota State, Mankato against North Dakota State. Mankato, winless six games into the season, lost 20-9. As many as 3,000 people were in a crowd that gathered Saturday night in a largely student residential area, some setting fire to trash bins, tearing down fences, smashing car windows and throwing rocks and bricks at officers, police said. Two officers retreated after reaching the scene and waited for backup. ``When police backed off, the students were so excited because they thought they had defeated the cops,'' said Brian Boothe, a senior. Police in riot gear then used eye and skin irritants to disperse the crowd, and arrested 45 people. Four officers were injured by objects thrown at them, said Jim Franklin, the city's public safety director. The area became so dangerous that it took an armored vehicle to pick up a student who reportedly wasn't breathing, Franklin said. Police also received reports of students being assaulted by fellow students. About a dozen people were treated for injuries at a nearby hospital. Franklin blamed alcohol for the problems. Witnesses said the riot started when about 400 students at a party after the game became violent and started throwing empty beer bottles at around 11:30 p.m. As the crowd grew, students damaged vehicles and filled the street. About 160 police officers were called in before the crowd was finally dispersed about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Franklin said. Bob Idding, who lives nearby, said he couldn't believe what was happening. ``It was the scariest feeling in the world,'' Idding said. ``I shouldn't have been there, I know that. My wife and I were telling each other, 'This isn't Mankato, Minnesota. We have police in riot gear in the streets.''' The university's president, Richard Davenport, said students identified in videotapes that were taken at the scene would face disciplinary action. ``I found the events of last night deeply disturbing,'' he said. ``To the extent that our students were involved with others, we are extremely disappointed.''

Blamed on alcohol eh? No shit. I get so sick and tired of hearing that. How about blame it on sheer stupidity that is merely fueled by alcohol. I am going to rant and rave now. I am an ICU nurse. I see trauma after trauma after trauma. Almost all of them are blamed on alcohol. Oh sure, genuine accidents happen, but they seem to be a tiny minority of what rolls through our doors. Simple falls, 4-wheeler accidents, snowmobile accidents, automobile accidents caused by alcohol are regular events. The lives of the victims and their families forever changed because either they or the person that caused the accident was too drunk to exercise decent judgement. These folks often have REALLY high blood alcohol levels several hours after the incident. No telling just how drunk they were when the event occurred. Then, their families, often dysfunctional, look for someone to blame. Well 9 times out of 10, the person to blame is the one in the ICU bed with a ventilator to breathe for them, drain holes in their heads to relieve the pressure from the closed head injury, monitors connected to everything. Then to make it even more fun, after a couple of days, these already severely injured and medically unstable folks start to suffer from delerium tremens (DT's). Oh yeah, even though they are often comatose, their bodies are still looking for the alcohol they are used to. Makes my job just that much more difficult and the recovery of the patient less likely. It just pisses me off sometimes to see the wasted lives and the ruined families. So pardon my ranting, but I just got home after a night shift taking care of, guess what?? Another alcohol induced accident victim. Don't think that I don't take good care of those that I am entrusted with. I do. I give each of them a little bit of my own heart and soul. When I can't do that anymore, I will look for another line of work. |

Another nice, unseasonably wonderful day today in TH. High is supposed to be in mid 70's. Clear blue sky, blah, blah, blah. I am headed out to Agate Bay to launch my new (to me) kayak for the first time. I hope those oreboats stay the heck out of my way. My kayak was a wedding present from my father-in-law. Pretty darn nice guy. The only thing is, he gave it to me with no paddle. Do you think he was trying to tell me something? |

Sounds like a nice present there Webby. The old saying "up the creek without a paddle" comes to mind though. Ole and Sven are neighbors in Minnesota. Ole is in need of a new milk cow. He hears about a nice one for sale over the border in Wisconsin. He drives over to Wisconsin, looks at the cow, and reaches under to see if she gives milk. When he grabs the teat and pulls, the cow farts. Ole is very surprised, looks at the farmer who is selling the cow, and reaches under the cow to try again. He grabs another teat, pulls, and the cow farts again. Milk does come out, however, so after some discussion, Ole decides to buy the cow anyway and take it home. He calls over his neighbor, Sven, and says, "Come here and look at dis new cow I just bought. Pull her teat, and see what happens." Sven reaches under and pulls; the cow farts. Sven looks at Ole and says, "You bought this cow in Wisconsin, yah?" Ole is very surprised and says, "Yah, dats right, how did you know?" Sven says, "My wife is from Wisconsin." |

Kind of a moot question, but no, I couldn't. I can hardly turn my head in a kayak without nearly tipping over. Practice, practice, practice. |

Hey! Look at the picture I found!! This time it is the breakwater and with no cement. I remember it looking like this, It was not a very easy walk out to the end in those days. If you look close you can see the Edna G pulling that ore boat.

Neat picture Torggy. I remember the old breakwater as well. We used to go down there and crawl down between the rocks and have a cigarette, many many years ago. |

Is this going to be a weekly publication like the local T.H. paper. If so, I can't wait for the next edition. Sure wish there will be a letters to the editor section. Will this new porn shop be located in the downtown area?? Might really help bring back the downtown business!!! |

WOW!! Really?! A job! That would be great! Just to show you how much I want the job I have started to "test the market" and found this study. I think we can find our niche in spanking paddles. HOUSTON, Texas -- According to a new survey conducted by the Adam & Eve Sex Toy Co. about 61 percent of Americans talk about sex while they're "gettin' some." The surveyed showed that 64 percent of men and 59 percent of women like discussing their sexual desires during sex. In addition, about 37 percent of Americans like to talk dirty when performing their "bedroom exercises"; 25 percent use sex toys and 22 percent watch adult movies. Finally, 21 percent of guys love spanking their partners ... and so do 14 percent of women.
